Fantastic place to experience the bygone era of steam locomotives. There are a couple of period engines, with beautiful carriages to carry you between the stations.
It's slightly cheaper to buy your tickets online the previous day.
Brilliant place to visit and enjoy a steam train ride and go back in time for an hour or two. We had a picnic in the sun, a little walk around looking at the old rusty trains waiting for there turn to be back steaming away again. My daughter really enjoyed the day.
Spontaneous visit as we passed close by. Pleased we did. Took the return train journey.
Excellent volunteers who go out if their way to make your visit enjoyable.

Lovely Railway Station built from scratch by the Volunteers of the Tanfield Railway.
Excellent tea-room and good facilities including a spacious Car Park. There's also a learning Centre with many historical documents on display.

Lovely Day Out For The Polar Express, Staff Very Friendly and Helpful, Lovely Train Ride and Great Santa Set Up.. 🎅🏼
Another year, another joyous time on the north pole express. After trying out the train to Xmas hell a few years back at another venue (sorry Tanfield, thanks for having us back, we won't do it again) we finally got tickets here again and absolutely had the best time with our kids ages 6 and 1. The
Easy 5 star, excellent couple of hours out on the train and the walk. The volunteers very helpful and friendly. The tea room and shop good and with covid measures in place. You book your own part of the train and its very good the price. Well worth a visit, thank you to those keeping it running
Great little steam railway. Trains run along a scenic route between timeless stations. Along side the railway is walks which show the local history, it also has vantage points to view the trains. The volunteers are very easy to talk to and their knowledge is vast.
