The Porch House is a historically significant pub, with origins dating back to 947 AD. Beyond its historical charm, the restaurant and pub offer a well-designed layout, with ample tables allocated for both hotel guests and the general public.
One minor inconvenience we encountered was the absence of menus on the table, requiring us to get up and seek one from behind the bar. Nevertheless, the prices, while on the higher side, were justifiable for a five-star pub.
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish and chips, which featured a wonderfully crispy and fresh batter. The fish itself tasted far from frozen, and the chips were exceptionally fresh, exuding a genuine potato flavor. The accompanying sauces enhanced the overall dining experience.
A standout feature of this establishment is its warm welcome to dogs, making it a pet-friendly venue. However, it’s worth noting that the practice of encouraging tipping on card machines, although common in America, can be somewhat uncomfortable for the rest of us.
Loved my solo stay here!! Room 9 is divine. Staff and setting are top notch. The coziness and soul of the inn and bar were great. Lots of history and charm here. Very cozy stay. When had dinner and breakfast, Chef’s food is fantastic!! Joan is lovely at reception!
We ate in the Porch House in October 2023 and had a really lovely meal with excellent service. We ate the arancini for starters and fish (monkfish and paella) for main course, both of which was cooked excellently and full of flavour. Their apple crumble was one of the nicest I have had, and we considered a second trip just for it. Staff were very attentive, really smooth service and also very helpful. Would recommend coming here while you are in Stow
This location boasts at being the oldest inn in England, est. 947 AD. While we did not stay at the inn, we returned for a second dinner during our stay at Stow. The interior is beautifully preserved with charm, and the staff stood out to us as the kindest in the area. Both nights we went we were very impressed with the service and the food. They also seem to serve food a bit later than other pubs in the area. Try the sticky toffee pudding for dessert! You won’t be disappointed!
This was an amazing stay! I’m sure you could point a finger anywhere in the Cotswolds and end up with a lovely stay, but staying at Englands oldest in should be in your list.
The Cotswolds are picturesque, historic, quaint and very digestible. Stow on the Wold is no exception. It may be a small town but it’s quaint and quiet especially at night.
The Porch House is a wonderful stay while you are there. The rooms are comfy and cute. The dining rooms and bar are a great place at any time of the day, whether you stay at the Inn or not and the food is exceptional. I recommend getting dressed up and showing up for dinner. Do think ahead and make reservations especially during the summer rush.
The Porch House was a beautiful building with its exposed stone and timber, and it was a good, quiet place to rest at the end of the day of sightseeing. 10 out of ten 10.
Came here for an evening meal, booked in advance, a very warm welcome upon arrival to England's oldest inn. Beautifully kept interior, a wondering dining area to the back, sadly shut due to a flood as there was a sudden down pour. Food was delicious, the squid was indeed as good as everyone else has said, probably the best calamari I've ever had, period. Melted in your mouth.
Fish and chips excellent quality and fresh, no room for desert as we were stuffed. Shout out to the bar man who ran an incredibly tight ship, constantly cleaning his area, making sure it looked it's best, and drinks came cold and with a warm smile.
We'd definitely go back! Highly recommend.
We had a lovely family anniversary meal here and was very well looked after by the staff. We have been a few times now and will definitely return. Thanks for making our special day memorable.
The Porch House has a long history and it's said to be the oldest pub in England, with timbers that have been dated to approximately 1000 AD, so I felt quite special to be able to stay here for a few days!
The only thing I’d mention is that it’s quite pricey to stay here. If you’re travelling with kids or other relatives, opting for a cottage might be a more affordable choice. Also, there was no tissue paper and fridge in the room. My husband did request them to put flowers on the bed but unfortunately, they completely forgot about it!
we were here in the summer of 2022, it was amazing, the people, the staff, the hotel, the food and the town could not have been better. This is my favorite place in the world and we cant wait to travel from Toronto and visit again, the ownership should be very proud of the staff and management, they are doing an amazing job. This is a must stay for anyone in area. Well Done.
We came for dinner with a party of 8. What a great, authentic, charming pub/restaurant! The service, food, food and drinks selection were outstanding! Our new favorite in Stowe!! We tend to come to the area every time we are in the UK and thoroughly enjoy the ambiance of the beautiful villages, the hospitality, the pubs, restaurants and quality of food. This one was 5 stars for us for several reasons! Thank you. We will be back!
Dinner for two. Excellent. Good food and wine selection. Service friendly and efficient. An hour before we arrived, a thunderstorm flooded a third of the place, no problems for the team😊.
Character is A+.
I was told part of the building was 947. I asked if she was missing a digit? "No" I was told! 947 AD!!

I have only tried the restaurant, not the rooms. Be sure to try Sunday Roast, from 12 noon every Sunday! The "trio" includes roast beef, chicken breast and pork loin.
