This is an atmospheric venue with knowledgeable staff and very creative menus producing exceptional flavors.
We had only previously visited for breakfasts (yummy) and coffee before so were over the moon when all guests on NYE were offered little taster pots of hot and freshly prepared delicious delights throughout the evening. So, now having sampled the food next problem is which friends to take with us when we go for dinner! Staff were brilliant. Thank you so much to everyone for such a great evening.
Fantastic food, service is very relaxed. Food is so tasty, my guests including my sister who is a chef compared the taste and presentation to a top London restaurant.
The move to new premises has not enhanced the offer. As sometimes happens the very reasons for popularity and patronage are left wanting when success beckons. Prices and portion sizes now make this original Sudbury pop up restaurant an expensive option when sampling several dishes. My final straw was a £10 cheese board which left me searching for the value..Our bill no longer reflected the reasons we patronised the original concept ..shame to say but we will not be making the journey again...😔
Table for 7 last night. Best food experience in Suffolk. Excellent, interesting food said all diners - turbot, gnocchi, kedgeree particular highlights. Great atmosphere and fantastic rustic barn - although a little chilly so take a layer! Really carefully chosen good value wine list and beers and ciders. So glad we found this gem. Staff were charming as well. What’s not to love.
Called in after seeing Facebook suggestion about newly smocked ribs.
Excellent and delicious
Can’t wait to go back
Went to Shillingfords at Foragers Retreat on Saturday 19th October and as per usual, had fantastic food and service. Having advised them in advance that a guest was celiac and had to have gluten free food, imagine our delight when the lovely Beth informed us on arrival that Carl had some gluten free bread cooking in the oven for her. I was overwhelmed by their thoughtfulness and our guest said it was delicious. What a wonderful gesture and so typical of the care and service that Carl and Beth display for their dining guests. This restaurant continues to amaze with the quality of food served and the warmth of the welcome provided by Carl, and Beth and her staff. Thank you to you all for yet another wonderful evening.
It is great to see Shillingfords (Foragers) doing do well in their new location. Carl is a first class cook and does forage for much of the food. There is a limited choice in consequence but imaginative choices cooked to perfection. You choose your menu a day or two in advance for the upstairs restaurant but there are no more than 20-30 covers. The menu changes regularly and depends very much on availability and the time of year. Beth runs the front of house is is a bundle of energy, a lovely person. To guarantee a table bookings should be made well in advance but frequently seats become free so worth following on Facebook. There is cafe downstairs that also provides tapas and other tasty nibbles. These people really deserve success as they have worked so hard for it and the results speak for themselves. Makes you wish you lived in Pebmarsh.
What a delight to dine at the Forager's retreat with the lovely Carl and Beth. Their new business here has really taken off and it it is not difficult to see why. Carl is a talented Michelin star Chef who forages most of the food for his inventive dishes whilst Beth and her team are front of house. This time we enjoyed wild mushroom pancakes, mushroom stroganoff, haunch of red deer, scallop wrapped in Dover sole followed by lavender and honey ice cream and wild blackberry sorbet. Each and every course was fantastic! The reviewer who says they don't like being asked to order in advance misunderstands the concept. This is foraged food for a small probably 25 covers restaurant and pre-ordering helps them to avoid food waste. I much prefer this approach to a huge restaurant menu and being told that particular dish is not available. Keep doing what you are doing Carl and Beth it works well for those of us who enjoy your concept.
Well, Shillingfords is definitely a restaurant that's different. With the proprietors always there, Carl and Beth run a tight ship. Carl is the chef who also forages for much of his dishes, with Beth always front of house. You can eat formally upstairs, though you must book - they are often booked weeks in advance - or informally downstairs with a limited menu. Carl puts a large tasty, one pot meal on the bar, and when it's gone, it's gone. There are lovely 'tapas' style bits and bobs to nibble while having a drink. You don't have to eat, you can just sit there, having a drink and soaking up the atmosphere. Dogs welcome outside in the courtyard garden. I cannot recommend this eatery more highly.
A very unusual setting, but spacious and comfortable. Excellent service and attention by staff, and the personalised place cards listing menu choices is a nice touch. Food was delightful albeit small portions, however, overall an enjoyable experience. My only, and very personal criticism, is having to submit menu choices a week or more before visiting. I'm not good at predicting my appetite!
Having been twice in a week for brunch we decided to book for an evening meal. Emailed 3 days ago for a booking for next Saturday...our Anniversary and received an email saying someone would contact us asap. Went there on Friday and asked for confirmation and was told again someone would contact us. Emailed again yesterday...no response. Not very efficient . Obviously have had to book alternative venue. Very disappointed as menu looked very interesting and were looking forward to an enjoyable meal.
We visited this week as a group of 7. The food was mostly excellent, well presented and tasty. However few points. Our starter of Tomato and Mozzarella Salad was OK, but lacked mozzarella. It was mostly tomato with very little mozzarella, and the pesto was overpowering-basil leaves would have been nicer.
The venison was beautiful, but husband and another of our group had the dover sole which was miniscule with virtually no garnish or additions-no vegetables, salad or anything.
Our desserts were lovely but I could only have ice cream as I am gluten free. It was lovely ice cream but I could not have the tuile basket they had. It was bit plain aand boring.
Ambiance was great whilst having pre dinner drinks, interesting cocktails with foraged fruit. Taken to our table later than booked as a member of our group was running late. Staff were really good about this and happy for us to wait.
Individual menus / place settings from pre booked menu were a great touch. Pre booking was to prevent waste of foraged food items although I noticed specials were also available.
All three courses were perfectly cooked, interesting and packed with flavour. Good wine selection alongside.
It isn't a surprise that bookings are essential for evenings as this place has more than a little of everything to make a great night out.
I have wanted to go to Shillingfords/Forager's Retreat for ages but for one reason or other I hadn't been able to.
It was worth the wait! From the moment we arrived Beth and her team looked after us superbly. We had a good drink and catch up with our friends on the balcony and were called to our table when our food was ready to be served. Every dish that came out was superb. My personal favourite was the Trio of Oyster Mushrooms, very cleverly disguised as actual oysters!
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough!!
Finished work at 12.00 so the wife decided let's here for light lunch. Greek salad, bean salad with cranberry and brie tart. Superb, washed down with a tasty white wine. Would definitely recommend.
Once again we went to The Foragers Retreat in Pebmarsh (used to be known as Shillingfords when at the Quay Theatre, Sudbury. The new premises are just as we would have expected: a sympathetic renovation of old stables, and yet somehow modern. The food, of course, was really scrummy. We took family and ate in the downstairs bar from the 'pot on the counter': a divine Paella! We cannot recommend this lovely place enough.
Visited today as a group of 10 for a friend’s birthday, to start the day off. The chef’s cooked breakfast is the best breakfast I have ever eaten. The quality of the food surpasses the £8 price tag. As always Beth and Carl have created a great restaurant. They work incredibly hard and I do not know how they make a profit on this.
Other members of our group had eggs benedict; pancakes with bacon and sautéed mushrooms, all thoroughly enjoyed
Call in and support a local; bespoke business run by a lovely, hard working couple for the best breakfast you are ever going to taste
We visited the cafe in Pebmarsh today, meeting a friend there for breakfast. I had been a bit suspicious of the superb reviews but now I understand why there are so many. A great little spot on the edge of Pebmarsh village, and as it was a sunny morning we chose to dine on the little roof terrace. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, the interiors are rustic and charming, the food was excellent and also the coffee - such a rarity!
We each chose different menu items and they were all very good. Our only wish for improvement would be if they offered something other than white bread - both the bread that accompanied the mushrooms, and the English muffin that accompanied the eggs, were both white. We asked for wholemeal / wholegrain / anything other than white but there was no other choice.
Seven friends and I had dinner here, ordering just about everything on the menu. It was all wonderful. My wild boar risotto was delicious. The ambience was relaxed and the staff were attentive and helpful. We’d definitely all go back there. Great wine too!
