A fabulous place to have a really different, beautifully cooked wild dinner. Ideal for a celebration. A great location hidden away with very helpful and attentive team of staff. You couldn't ask for more. Well worth going.
Such a brilliant evening! It just felt very special from start to finish! Wonderfully warm and welcoming greeting from Beth; personalised menu cards; cosy, relaxed atmosphere and ambiance with great service and Carl's amazing and delicious food! Couldn't have asked for more! Love the concept of being able to choose several 'small' plates - rather like large starter sizes - we chose one dish to share, three savouries each and a dessert/cheese board. As it was a Thursday, we only booked the week before - if you are in the area, as we were, we would thoroughly recommend that you give a ring to ask about availability (leave name and number and they really do get back to you!) - - and book if at all possible!
Known as the Forager's Retreat this is a little gem. It's set at the end of a big village a way from anywhere with a local shop and hairdresser, while they have a selection of beer and ancillaries for sale as well. We went for Sunday lunch and while menu choice was limited to four roasts (3 meat one veggie) the price charged for the amount of food was a good ratio. Parking on site was adequate.
Food, service, atmosphere were all excellent, and patience in abundance as several of us were late arriving.
For me, part of that problem was that Google maps and my phone were playing games with me, but it would have seriously helped me if there had been an obvious sign on the road side.
The chicken pie is excellent! Pastry is buttery and light, with a tasty filling. The goulash is also very good, be sure to lap up the rich gravy with some baguette. Our party was very surprised at how great the food was here. Will definitely stop by here again if we're passing through.
The very best coffee by far, we absolutely love their Croque Monsieur dish & the homemade salad dressing finishes it off so well, infact every different meal we've had has been delicious & great quality, the service & staff are excellent to!
Really enjoyed eating at this little gem of a restaurant, the food and drinks they serve are fantastic, the staff are very friendly and attentive. And attached is their wonderful deli where you can indulge in wonderful locally sourced produce. With all the beautiful made food available to take away. An array of Smoked cheeses, fish and meat and other smoked food is available to name just a few. What a real treat, and was really worth the visit. Welldone guys.
Ordered 35 kids sausage and chips for a party - they came in lovely little boxes and were ready to collect on time. Easy to order online as well and really good value!

Excellent food, service and hosts! After eating many times at Shillingfords I followed these guys to the wonderful Foragers Retreat where we spent our New Years Eve and Wow were we happy! The building is fabulous, the hosts were incredible and the food was off the scale good and plentiful as ever! Thank you for making our new year special and we look forward to eating with you on your reopening - we are already booked in!!
