Review The Carpenters Arms - Sunninghill

Amazing food, service and atmosphere… the food choices are superb and often times hard to find elsewhere. The staff is amazing friendly and know their menu, perfect for a date night family night or just some friends. Highly recommend. Now to be clear I ordered some more expensive items but I was very impressed about the presentation and the quality was more than enough for two…

French pub. A hidden gem that I always wish if there is one in my area. Delicious dishes and wide selections. Warm foie gras was great! Will come back again!

Been here a couple of times in the past, this time is for my Birthday and Wedding Anniversary. Wow, just amazing, still here and about to order dessert. I have been lucky to have been to many lovely restaurants around the world, but this place is just awesome . Sunday lunch is an absolute must!!

Fab find in Sunningdale. Great food, obliging and experienced staff. Village location. The landlord (Nick) and staff (Heidi & Charlotte ? - Ms BA) together with bar and an array of others provided a first class experience both yesterday (Tue 20th June) and today 21st for a small group of visiting Chauffeurs - thank you. #GarytheChauffeur

Wonderful meal at the carpenters. The crab and avocado starter and the fish of the day main course were excellent.

Lovely restaurant and great French food. Service was very good and parking was easy at lunch time. Nice for a special occasion. I had the Foie gras followed by Confit du Canard both were delicious.

Came here on a Friday evening, lovely atmosphere, great staff and service and what a fantastic choice of food on the menu, I was spoilt for choice but settled on escargot to start done in a lovely garlic butter and followed by steak rossini, superb fillet steak, cooked perfect. Wine choices were certainly good. All in all a great experience and well worth visiting, I will be back soon

We had a wonderful time here today. We came just before the kitchen closed and they happily seated us. We were a really big table and everyone was very happy! One of our new favourites

If you're in the mood for authentic French cuisine that will transport you straight to the streets of Paris, look no further than this hidden gem of a restaurant. I've had the pleasure of dining here six times since moving to the area, and each visit has been an absolute delight. One dish that truly stands out is the fondue. It's a rare find in most restaurants, but this place has truly mastered the art of preparing it. The smooth and creamy texture of the melted cheese, paired with the perfectly toasted bread and array of dipping options, make for a truly memorable culinary experience. But the fondue is just the tip of the iceberg here. The menu features a wide range of classic French dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. The atmosphere of the restaurant is equally charming, with a cozy and intimate ambiance that makes you feel right at home. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to make recommendations or offer wine pairings to complement your meal. Overall, if you're looking for a true taste of France this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. Whether you're a seasoned foodie or just looking for a romantic date spot, you won't be disappointed.

12 of us went to the French restaurant in The Carpenters Arms, each of our group thought the food was fantastic!

I have worked in this restaurant and as a Chef I can say that this is a true and original French cousin prepared and presented on traditional way that has been used 150 years ago. Food is delicious and during weekends it is hard to book a table so plane in advance.

What a lovely pub in a lovely village! The food was delicious and service with a smile. Can't wait to visit again.

Best french bistro in town!! AMAZING food and super pleasant service. I was looking for a good foundue in Windsor area and found this lovely option. Really recommend the foundue, oysters and merengue for little desert. They sent it together with the bill and my desire was to be there eating forever :) looking forward to visiting this place again!

It feels like you are going out in a lovely little village away from everywhere. You are then treated to a very interesting menu, a good wine list and friendly staff who serve delicious food from the excellent kitchen.

Delicious food, fabulous service and always a friendly welcome. Can never tire of coming here. Great wine list too. Literally can't fault it

Nice establishment with a great vibe. Good selection of ales on offer or bottled beers.

Menu consists of sandwhiches, burgers reasonably priced. Tried the club sandwhich good sized serve generous filling.

Not a French Fancy. So much promise, great location, lovely decor, poor delivery!
What is this place supposed to be? A pub serving good French cuisine or a French Restaurant with a bar area for mingling! In fact neither is the case or rather it's a brash clash between the two. There are TV screens in the restaurant area and when we lunched, the 6 nations rugby was on and there was a table of noisy drunk gents next to us, which ruined what ambiance there was.
The place is expensive for a local Pub. The food is badly cooked and very overpriced and did not taste or feel French. There is an extensive wine list, but again very expensive for what it is.
It feels like the owners are trying to take advantage of the location and the wealthy area, rather than focussing on the quality of their food. For centuries, the English have had to put up with the French complaining at the quality of French food in this country, if this is their export to improve the quality of food over here, then they can have it back!
So to the food, it is at best French rustic, at worst very pubby, I had the chicken, which was very dry, overcooked and tasteless, served with frozen chips. The presentation was clumsy and not very professional; I could have eaten better at a Weatherspoons. If it is French food that you are looking for, then give this place a pass and head to a Cote or Cafe Rouge, much better authentic French food at half the price.

To put my comments into perspective, I do not live in the area; I am a foodie who hails from London. Maybe I have been spoilt with the fine dining in the City of London. Maybe the patrons of this venue have too much money to care about the quality of the food. Either way, no one should have to put up with this poor quality; I am surprised that this restaurant is still in business. It is in desperate need a Gordon Ramsey make over.
Fine Diner
Overpriced and under par. We dined here on Monday night and I must admit I was shocked at the prices. It seemed the cheapest dish was around £15 and there were several above £25. My friends opted for the cheese fondue (£26.95 for 2) and said it was alright. It looked quite runny to me and certainly nothing special. I had the jambonneau (Ham hock) which was extremely disappointing. Although the meat was well cooked, there was not much of it residing on a massive piece of fat and sat in a bowl of what looked like dishwater. It had a few carrots, new potatoes and cucumbers in with it and the alleged mustard taste was distinctly lacking. It is quite possibly the worst £16 I have ever spent. I asked for some french fries to accompany it but what arrived was an attempt at twice cooked chips. Unfortunately, they just tasted slightly burnt and very oily.
It was a Monday night so you wouldn't expect much of an atmosphere but the staff were obviously fed up and one young waitress was particularly snooty and had to be reminded twice when we requested more drinks. She could hardly blame it on being rushed off her feet!
I thought the menu was uninspired and really for what reads as rustic French cuisine it is hugely overpriced.
I won't be going again.
Foodie
If you can't say anything nice say nothing at all !. Good location, great starter dried Ham; crusty bread, rib of beef and fries, superb red wine from the Launguedoc. A very good meal.

Sadly when we read the reviews we thought about canceling, I am glad we decided to give it a try. " One mans meat" as they say.
Peter
Food Critic. Possibly one of the most over rated restaurants in the area.....but then again, there aren't that many!
Simply, it is over priced, badly served and managed, and the quality of the cuisine sucks====>if you like French food, this is not the place: its cheaper and better at Waitrose!

Nearly right. Arguably the best part of Sunninghill's village location, the premises had been maintained well since my last visit.
This time it was not so busy but the atmosphere was convivial. If only our eyes would light up when the plates are put in front of us. My terrine starter could compare with the ones from a supermarket a mile away. Considering also a main course only price with then ordering a side dish comes up to £20 it's not much to ask for. When the bill came the bottle of wine was charged at an extra £2. Priced as it is larger portions would make up for the quality it believes It has.

Great place!. I have eaten at The Carpenters many times over the last year both at lunchtime and in the evenings and have always been extremely pleased with the food and the service. The nice thing is the food is all fresh and the menu changes according to what is in season. I have always found it to have a vibrant and pleasurable atmosphere. In fact, I have visited twice this week - once with my husband when we had fresh asparagus as a starter and the steak as a main course (cooked to perfection) and again two days later with a group of my girlfriends when we decided to try the cheese fondue. My 3 girlfriends had not been to The Carpenters before although they live relatively locally and were very impressed and will certainly be back with or without me!. They were also thrilled with the desserts particularly the Tarte au Citron. The bar area is separate and both the bar and the restaurant have a nice outside terrace.

I have read the review below and would wholly disagree with it. I can highly recommend this restaurant to people who like French cuisine or who just like food in general!

Fantastic. This has to be one of the best 'gastro pubs' I have been to. I love the authentic French feel. I am not sure if some of the other reviewers have been to the right place because the welcome I received was fantastic. The food is great (the pan-fried foie gras is a must) and it is excellent value. They have a good selection of ales and a decent wine list. I like the way they have split the pub and the restaurant side and the newly refurbished outside terrace is outstanding. Top of my list

Not special at all. Heard a lot of people had visited. Very busy but our meal was a long wait for overvalued food.
Sophie
Sophie. Have been to this restaurant many times and have never had a bad meal. I would endorse Lindsey's comments. It is impossible to get a table now unless you book early! Very buzzy restaurant.
Lindsey
Lindsey. Have eaten here on several occasions both lunchtime and evening since it has reopened as a French restaurant .... both service and food have been superb every time ... excellent, authentic, rustic French cuisine ... everything fresh and homecooked. Prices very reasonable, unlike many of the restaurants in this area. The fact that this little restaurant is now always busy says it all. My only criticism would be that the lighting in the evening could be improved upon and the decor is not particularly to my taste. Food, service and value for money SUPERB!!!!

Glacial service with a frown. Dont go to this restuarant if you want three courses and want to leave before morning light. It's soooooo slow its unbelievable. When we pointed it out the long time (2 1/2hrs for 2 courses), the waiter told us that everything is cooked to order so people have to wait. Ha - if they cooked scallops for an hour I don't want to eat them. It seems as if everybody came in at the same time overloading the kitchen. Shame they cant manage their bookings. To be honest this put a whole dark cloud over the evening. Were' definitely not going back becuase the food's not good enough to account for the terrible service.

Disaster!!. Went to this restaurant with 9 friends and was very disappointed. I ordered fish soup and duck for main course. The fish soup was very pleasant but as my friends received their second courses mine was missing so I waited for 20 minutes and mine arrived as they were finishing. I cut into my duck and blood seeped out of it and as it was all on a plate with the vegetables I left it as I was worried about food poisoning and also being under-cooked it tasted horrid. When the waiter came up he could see that I hadn't eaten it but just took it away even though I told him it was not cooked properly. By this time my friends had their deserts so I missed out. My bill for one glass of wine and a fish soup was £48 when we split the bill and although I appreciate that I was driving and some of my friends were not - this seemed very expensive!!! I will not be going to this restaurant again.
