Reviews The Angel Inn

Review based on September 2018: Let the food do the talking here; while there is probably some reticence from "The Angel" of past, rest assured that the food is absolutely fantastic (see images) and great value. 3 courses for £20, is very well priced for the quality indeed. The menu is diverse, and caters for varying tastes (well done!) Starters we had a fish cake and chicken roulade. Mains were pig cheeks and confit of duck. Dessert was clotted cream rice pudding and sticky toffee pudding. Very tasty and enjoyable. Interior is still very much like a pub, but wouldn't be fair to remove a star rating based on this, as we came to experience the food and left really happy. You could spend less with a voucher at Prezzo, but you'd miss out on a really high quality menu.

Visited this fledgling restaurant (new owners) recently and to say I was impressed would be an understatement! After a debating what to try (everything sounded delicious) I opted for the chicken ballotine and ham hock starter and confit duck main.  My husband went for the pulled pork and chickpea ragout followed by the sea bass. The first indication of things to come was the basket of freshly baked sourdough bread which was delicious. Every single dish was spot on, the meats in the terrine were so moist and the confit duck was the best I've had outside of the Dordogne! A few cheeky tastes of my husbands dishes confirmed similar success. All this and a couple of glasses of wine from a small but interesting wine list came to less than £50. Considering a  meal at various chain restaurants with reheated/microwaved food would be similar in cost, I certainly know where I would rather spend my money! We will certainly be returning and would recommend anyone thinking of visiting to get your table booked!

Fantastic food brilliant service and a friendly atmosphere. Phoebe and Molly were superb very chatty and welcoming. I dined alone and was made to feel so welcome. The food was sooooo tasty and different. All home cooked and freshly prepared on order and it shows!!! I had the fish soup and the roast brisket on a bed of creamy potato topped with beautifully roasted carrots and smothered in a peppercorn sauce. I give it 6 out of 5 stars. I will without a doubt be back for more. To avoid disappointment I advise booking before hand as I can see it being very busy regardless of what night it may be. Happy dining. Been back again and beautiful again!! Had soup again to start followed by pan fried fillet steak, sauteed mushrooms and triple cooked, fresh, sea salted chips with roasted shallots. My steak came rare, as requested, tender and succulent, fresh and tasty. I can't fault my experience. Sharon, Molly and Lawrence your service is fantastic and the food you serve is nothing short of perfect, thank you.

Only been with new owners 4 weeks. We were looking for some food local. Not much choice in Swadlincote unless you have cheap and cheerful microwaved food at Weatherspoon or Hungry Horse. We saw the Angel went in it had obviously been tastefully done up, now more of restaurant than pub. Looked at the menu. Yes pricier than the usual local. But the food is very high quality and inexpensive for what is excellent food prepared by a chef. 30% more than yu pay for a microwaved pie and frozen chips. Excellent service. A very pleasant surprise to find such quality food local. Only a handful of freshly cooked delights on the menu with sumptuous puddings and starters. This menu is changed weekly. So I am looking forward to my next visit for something new and exciting. A great place to go to impress friends

This was my first visit to The Angel, but it certainly won't be my last. From the very welcoming staff, to the delicious food which was all freshly cooked, I couldn't find anything to fault. Set in a nice location, it is a friendly place to enjoy a most satisfactory meal & drink. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

Amazing family meal. The staff very friendly and helpful as they try to cater for our 21 months old. The food was delicious and our little one was looked after brilliantly! Definitely going back!

I'm leaving a well earned 5 star review today! This place has beautiful food and lovely staff. Me and husband love to have a nose at reviews now and again at places we've previously visited (we are normally all for trip advisor). However whilst browsing The Angel, we came across some negative reviews? Which we find really hard to believe as we have visited this resturant a few times and the staff truly couldnt be more helpful. I remember having a conversation about the chef, Lawrence with one of the ladies and his journey. I have noticed he was mentioned as a waiter? Looks very malicious to me. Dont let this put you off, lovely place, delicious fresh food. Deserves more recognition! We are hoping to visit again once we are in the area!

After an uncertain start regarding google search published opening times. We turned around and ate here. SO glad we did 🙂 Excellent service and food of a quality that Swadlincote deserves but does not always get. Also got to meet two delightful fellow diners. Please support this restaurant.

Very good effort Came here for the first time. Lots of positives - food and service are great, wines ok could do with something a little bit better but prices are good. Need to look at their gins as Gordon's was the only one on offer and with current taste for a variety of gins wouldn't be difficult to improve this. Only derogatory comment is: you can judge a good place by its toilets. Toilets were clean but very tired looking. Really need a revamp. I know it may appear to be an unnecessary cost to a start up business but they do portray an image of a place. So very nearly there and a very good effort. Swadlincote can afford just that little bit better. Don't get caught out in the middle ground. Well done.
