Review The Start Bay Inn - Torcross

Sat inside for fish and chip dinner. Nice 🐟 & 🍟 - massive portions! Lovely light batter on the 🐟. And a decent pint of Ale. The service was very pleasant and the food arrived very quickly. They also do a takeaway service so you can sit and eat/ drink on the beach if you prefer.

Probably my favourite Fish 'n' Chip restaurant in the whole country. I would guess that I've been visiting since the mid-Eighties as a young teen and we now visit at least yearly, when staying with the Aged-Ps. The cod & chips are to die for and the helpings are very generous, with their "Large" offering a challenge for anyone! The staff are always friendly, the selection of beer satisfying and you can't beat enjoying your F&C while sitting on a rug on the beach. At busy times, there can be a bit of a wait for food, but the system they have is efficient and there's always the scenery to enjoy while waiting. Keep an eye out for the seals, which can be seen patrolling, just offshore. Highly, highly recommended.

Went back a 2nd time here while visiting the area...first time for fish and chips supper..excellent..and then for a sandwich lunch sitting outside. Crab sandwiches had run out so we had prawns.. more ordinary but a generous serving with a side salad included. Great to see the thatched roof still there. Walked up and down the promenade afterwards...great views if you take the steps at the western end ...back along the length of Slapton Sands towards Blackpool sands.

I first started visiting Torcross in the late 60's as a very young lad. Was allowed in to the Start Bay in the late 70's when Paul and his wife were running the pub. It is now in the very capable hands of his daughters and I am very pleased to say having visited again this week that very little has changed. Still a superb venue. I understand from his granddaughter that Paul is still out catching the fresh crab and he is well in to his eighties! Great food in a great venue served by a friendly and efficient team! Don't miss out.

Went for lunch, fish and chips were incredible with a lovely curry sauce. Others on our table had the prawn salad and crab sandwhich, booth looked equally as good. Great service too.

Greeted by very friendly staff. The place was very clean and homely. I ordered the large fish and chips and what they served me was a WHALE. To big for the plate so they had to stack it . the portions are massive and taste so good. I will definitely be going back again value for money 100%.

Great all round. Huge portions of quality food. Included a special on the fish board; grilled Red Gurnard plus a classic Haddock and chips as well as a kids calamari (definitely big enough for an adult size). Super friendly service, nice atmosphere amongst the staff, which is good to see. Very quick too with minimal waiting time. Finally, of course, it's directly on the coast, so easy to have fun as a family jumping around on the rocks and catching the sunset.

Fabulous fish and chips -they were gorgeous , perfect batter, freshest fish and freshly cooked too…simply the best! However hopefully a one off but the treacle pie was presumably re’heated in a microwave and was horrible and rubbery . Didn’t spoil our visit but important to comment on

Fish 'n chips to rival Harry Ramsden. But washing that down with Salcombe Dairy ice cream, on the beach, takes it to another level. Sorry, Yorkshire, but Devon has it in spades. Beware, the portions are so huuuge, you will need time watching the seals, before you have room for the ice cream.

Came here for lunch on our stop at Slapton Sands and what a little gem of a place this is. The portion of scampi I had was huge and the chips were really good. The large cod really was huge! The dessert was divine too. I can definitely highly recommend this place as the portions are massive and the prices are more than fair. The lady serving us was lovely too. Will happily come back here!

The best fish and chips ever, we love it at the start bay! The staff are so friendly and helpful, highly recommend stopping off for a spot of lunch right on the beach and feed the ducks up the road. Perfect

Eat here most days when down on holiday as we have found it to be consistently high quality food, prompt and friendly service and the best value for money. We work our way through the excellent fresh fish board and enjoy a pint of local ale.
