Amazing food, atmosphere, staff and landlord! We had the potatoe and leek soup of the day, burger, steak and ale pie and rosemary fries - and Kevin, the landlord, even gave us both complementary mushroom and cheese pasties to hold us over until the kitchen opened beforehand! It all tasted like it was homemade, fresh and fantastic quality đŸ€€ this pub is so friendly and inviting with such a warm atmosphere. We got to talking with the super kind landlord alot before dinner. Visited with our small dog and sat next to a beautiful fire. We will be back - 10/10 from us!!

Amazing food as always, very tasty cumberland sausage (only ÂŁ10!) and garlic bread. Clean plates all around. Compliments to the chef Kev, delivered to the table personally.

Typical country pub. Roaring fire, cosy seating, regulars propping up the bar and just a great end to the day. And all kinds of dogs. đŸŸâ€ïž

High quality Sunday lunch with a lot more options than expected from the online menu. We had a small dog with us, so had to eat in the bar area but that was fine. Mushroom tagliatelle, blue cheese gnocchi, chicken and chorizo pie and cheeseburger were all excellent quality. Waitress was really helpful and thoughtful and did her best to make sure everything was as good as possible.

My friend and I went for Sunday lunch, and the usual chef was away. We ordered the beef roast. As much as the meal went, the beef was lovely, plentiful. The roast potatoes were the size of the top of my thumb, and 5 of them ! Vegetables were delicious, sprouting broccoli and carrots. The Yorkshire pudding was OK. But, no mash, no boiled. The meal was lacking, and as if they had ran out of potatoes. I decided to have a pudding, I chose Apple Strudle, although the bowl and the custard was nuked by microwave. The struddle was cold..however they changed for fresh peice of Strudle and it was hot. The staff were attentive, pleasant and I guess they have had better days and I will go again when the usual chefs returned.

This pub is a hidden gem. We had starters and Sunday lunch and the food was excellent. Probably the best pub Sunday lunch I’ve had from any pub for years! Tender beef and a great mix of vegetables. The staff were very friendly and cared for any request we had. Good selection of beers too. We left feeling satisfied and I will be returning to this pub when we are next in the area. Top Marks!! Sorry I don’t have any pictures, the food didn’t last that long!!

The food was excellent. The chef clearly knows his trade I couldn't fault a thing the wild mushrooms on toast were full of flavour and a health sized starter followed by roast lamb with all the trimmings. I will certainly be back for more

We had our first meal here today (emphasis on the word “first”). We will definitely be eating here again. I had the Lamb Rack and the good lady had the Sirloin, both of which were cooked to perfection. This was equally matched by the friendly service. Well done all.

We were staying in the village in a holiday cottage which we have done several times before. We have always enjoyed the Burgoyne for home made food, friendly locals and staff and the quiz night. We were aware John the previous landlord had left and the pub had new management so weren't sure what to expect. We were pleased to find the new management also to be friendly and are obviously trying new events, menus etc. The food we had during the week was really tasty and apparently the new couple are both chefs and doing the food themselves. We had to wait a while on one occasion when it was busier but management apologised for this and it didn't mar our evening. We look forward to our next visit to the area and to see how the pub develops. We wish Claire and Kev every success!

Due to unforeseen kitchen problems the guys were running a heavily reduced menu. Can't be helped sometimes but the team dealt with it well. The food we did have was excellent and the team were putting an absolute shift in to keep everything going. Five stars for nailing it as best as can be in really difficult circumstances. Excited to return when they're back to full strength.

The General Burgoyne Inn is a great place to have a drink either in the rather cosy bar where anyone will talk to you, or at a table on the the patio. Either way it will be difficult to resist the gorgeous smells coming from the kitchens and the other customers food. The speciality here has always been 'pie and peas'; satisfying and tasty. The restaurant here has a very good reputation, however I hav'nt been yet so can't say. Back to the drinks - you can get Carling, Stellar, Strongbow, Guiness and Hartley's XB on draught here, which may be reason enough to visit. The place was built around 1631 so the building itself is great. There are 25 parking spaces, and very little on the road.

Venturing to the Lakes is always exciting for me - as a Southerner, it's not somewhere I've frequented very often, so I never tire of getting on the train and suddenly being propelled into the countryside. On our last trip, it was a celebratory affair with my boyf's dad's birthday almost upon us (30, again?) and we were all looking forward to our trip to The General Burgoyne. Walking in, it's cozy and there are plenty of bits and bobs to look at, including a rather fetching if not slightly out of place fox tail. We were quickly seated and our orders taken - in fact, we felt well looked after throughout the evening, with all requests being seen to quickly and with a smile. Starters are the real highlight here. My goats cheese bon bons, served with pine nuts and a kind of olive tapenade, were worth shouting about; creamy and well balanced, I could have had them twice over. Everyone's dishes were beautifully presented and involved interesting flavour combinations - the chicken and sweetcorn "soup" for example included chicken and sweet chilli wontons, with tiny cylinders of chicken mousse. I wasn't feel too adventurous with my main, so went for the rump steak medium-rare. It was perfectly colours, but a touch chewy, especially the last few bites. The twice cooked chips were really tasty, but the onion rings were a flop, greasy and lacking in anything exciting. In hindsight, perhaps I should've gone for the Mediterranean vegetable offering - I'm just a sucker for a grill! We all shared two portions of the award winning Peanuts and a Pint, which was interesting to say the least. Not much of it was to my taste, but the presentation was stunning and I can completely see why it won. The Old Tom jelly was really interesting and worth a try by any real ale fans. Well worth the trip; a culinary adventure with traditional roots.

went to the general burgoyne inn today 18 jan 2012 was greeted with a warm welcome by a staff member, who served me and my wife, and showed us around the pubs conservatoryand, the warm snug room which had a lovely rip roaring fire going. we decided to have a meal in this room, we were given a menu each and decided to have sweet potato chips with a selection of dips why we waited for our main course, which consisted of venison burginon with smokey bacon seasonal veg and baby new potatoes for me, and pan fried belly pork with carrot and parsnip mash and cabbage for my wife.i could not fault the starter just enough for me and the mrs it was very tasty. waited 20 mins for main course my meal was a bsoloutley delish well cooked melt in the mouth veg the same could not fault this meal would recomend it to anyone the mrs enjoyed her meal it was tasty value for money on both meals. they were also presented nicely, altogether a lovely meal. only one minor fault the food came on cold plates therefor the food cooled down quite quickley therefor ill give it 8out of 10
