Review The Trooper - Wall

Vassilis Ipsilantis
Visiting on a Monday afternoon for a relaxing family lunch was an absolute pleasure. Delicious starters, great choice of wine and beers and great main course dishes. As you walk through the main door you feel the warm welcome atmosphere. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There are plenty of choices and dish combinations. Flat iron steak was delicious, pizza was really good made and fish and chips plate was huge. Prices are also quite normal if you consider the food quality and the size of the dishes. Highly recommended 👌

The Trooper is a fantastic dining destination. Went there after a day out with the kids. The ambiance is inviting and laid-back, making it a great place to unwind. The food is not only delicious but also served promptly. The staff is both professional and accommodating, ensuring that your dining experience is top-notch. You won't have to wait long for your meal, and their attentive service adds to the overall satisfaction.

This venue accommodated 17 of us within a 3 day notice (a prior venue had to close their business) so at last minute I spoke to Jack over at The Wine House in Lichfield and he said they could fit us in at The Trooper, I had heard good things but never been. I was so happy they could fit us in at last minute notice. We gave our pre-orders which really helped, the service was slick, friendly and so helpful, they let us split the orders on separate receipts so our party could pay for own meals. The food was delicious, everyone commented on how much they enjoyed their food. We personally want to go back again next month for a date night. Atmosphere was so cosy, liv burners were on, music was nice, just really lovely posh pub environment. Thank you for making our special occasion so much more special. Xxx

Amazing food and lovely staff. We sat outside on the terrace, it was lovely. Anniversary amazingly spent.

Such a lovely place. Staff were very welcoming, friendly and polite. As it's a steakhouse, excellent choice of steaks and grills. Food was delicious and nicely presented. One must thing, please put Cheese and Biscuits on the normal menu, delicious. The Trooper was very clean and well decorated, with a lot of charm. Only down side, if being very picky, as it wasn't busy, it did lack atmosphere. Having said that, would definitely return.

We went to the Trooper for our wedding anniversary and tried the wagyu beef with it being a special occasion. It was cooked to perfection and the staff were friendly and polite and really looked after us . We can't rate this place highly enough *****

Great steak. Food came out in good time almost as quick as the drinks were poured. Well priced to for the amount and quality of the food. Service was spot on, staff were friendly and helpful. Only gripe we had was that we were seated by a fire exit where people were constantly coming in and out from and the cold wind that hit us every time the door got opened wasn't the best as we were trying to eat. Other than that it was perfect. Will be returning one day.

First time going to The Trooper would like to say food was amazing, but it was more ok than great. As a steakhouse, i would have expected the steak to be something special it was good but not anything special

I would highly recommend this place, thank you for pulling it out the bag for us we had the best time!!

A very good first visit to this restaurant, especially after hearing mixed reviews on the lack of service during busier times. Food was good, nice to see a varied menu , with some out of the ordinary choices on there. Staff were friendly and attentive. We all enjoyed our meals, had all 3 courses as menu was so extensive. Food was reasonably priced too. Would definitely return and recommend. We did dine midweek, so not sure what service would be like during busier times.

Perfect impromptu lunch today at the trooper. Great hospitality and service, delicious menu, steak cooked to perfection, my husband had a Thai tuna curry which he enjoyed. It is only our second visit here, the first bring years ago with the kids. Nice modern but classy vibe. Would recommend. Thankyou

Absolutely gorgeous food. Great service and polite staff. Way to noisy for the price, it sounded like your typical local pub with the amount of noise everywhere. I think if they got customers to be more respectful about the volume of their voices while people are eating, it will be perfect.

It was a very hot day but we still decided on a roast, didn't disappoint and neither did the very generous portion of bread & butter pud! Service was very friendly but a little disorganised and slow, we had to ask for drinks and then the wrong drink came - it didn't spoil anything though. It's a lovely venue for a meet up with friends, though we might choose a quieter day in future. Have recommended to friends already.

This is is such a lovely place overlooking fields so pretty. The staff are very friendly. The food is great. They do a bottomless brunch that I will definitely be returning to have very soon. Great outdoor seating area . Was a sunny day so was so nice. They have a cover & heaters if you wish to have that. Would definitely recommend to go here.

Really nice place to go for a drink and a meal great atmosphere and really friendly staff. Good was top quality and a very reasonable price for the portion size and quality of food. Highly recommend going to find out for yourself

Table booked for 8pm, meal arrived at 9.30. Have to say those who ordered steak said it was the best they’d had, however, I ordered the baked salmon and was average at best! We were offered a free round of drinks for the excessive wait which was a nice touch. Desserts unfortunately let them down again, no creme brûlée & the chocolate brownie sundae was pitiful, no taste/flavour and portion was small. Such a shame! Trooper you seriously need to sort out your service, staff were lovely & very apologetic however it’s no good if you can’t serve your food in a realistic time from ordering.

Went last night and felt compelled to review as there are some mixed reviews on here which really surprised me. As well as last night, we’ve eaten at The Trooper on a number of occasions and never had a bad meal. The food is always excellent, the choice extensive and it’s priced well too - apart from the steak but they’re not alone in charging a lot for steak. The service is first rate and the atmosphere is always lively without being OTT. My only issue is it’s always so difficult to get a taxi back from there. Whether the restaurant order it or we do, it always takes ages to arrive. Maybe they should run a minicab service on the side. They’d make a killing.....

Bit on the expensive side, but really nice surroundings, beautiful top quality food, nicely cooked & presented. Really nice staff, nice beer. Would recommend

My party of 8 had bottomless lunch here today and it was beyond 5*. Food was lovely and a brilliant choice, drinks were a great variety. The best part of it all was our server Beth, she was outstanding, attentive, friendly, funny!! She ensured our drinks were constantly topped up! The bottomless lunch today is going to be our new go to! Fabulous!!!! ******

Excellent food and service - place is so welcoming. Would recommend this place, especially if you are a lover of good steaks.

Me and a group of friends visited The Trooper today for the bottomless lunch for a friends birthday. We were all seriously let down by the whole experience, the cocktails were disappointing at best and the food was inadequate for an establishment which used to come with such a high reputation. A friend of mine ordered a burger which was so dry my friend barely touched it, on complaining, we were told that it was part of the £30 deal and that was pretty much that. I certainly wouldn’t go back in a hurry.

I went there for a birthday meal with my family on Saturday. Food took ages to come out, then a starter had been forgotten. My steak was like shoe leather, very dry and chewy. I ordered beef dripping chips which also came out dry and tasteless. Best thing about the place is the cocktails.
Georgina Burke
Had a wonderful meal celebrating my friends birthday, food was beautiful highly recommended! Beth was our waitress and was very attentive! Anything we needed she was there, and our drinks were also topped up! Pay rise is needed for Beth!

My first time going to the trooper, we went for the bottomless lunch, the food was lovely, and thanks to Zayn the lovely waiter we had, there was an endless supply of drinks. We had a fantastic experience and will be returning!
Sue Comlay
This is the best meal we have had ever! We loved the staff, the food, the drinks-it was amazing!! No wonder it is so busy!! 5 star!
Claire Wills
Belly pork was lovely but several flies flying around and when we commented to the waitress she said "I will see what I can do" but offer to move us is what we expected. Wafting flies while you eat is not good. Pudding average. Charged 75p for a portion of sautéed beans when we were told thats what the meal came with? A fork would have been useful to go with the pudding spoon.

Been twice with my friend and can never complain about the food or service. It was recommended by a few people and they were right. Location, interior, menu and price, can’t find any faults! Our new favourite food place

A visit to a place that had fallen in standards . So we kept away for years. Pleasantly surprised is an understatement. No fuss , but excellent service. Good wine choices and beers. Lovely refurbished surroundings. The food was amazing. Not one complaint. Very clean and food choices for everyone.

Disappointing. Had Sunday lunch there yesterday and although pleasant staff and food lovely although vegetables were too undercooking even for me, it's was very cold. We did ask to be moved but were told that seating plans did not allow it. Even staff said that there were drafts due to it been an old building. This was a birthday lunch with many people travelling a long way to be together and it's not acceptable to sit with your coat on too keep warm or to have to go to the fires during a meal to get warm.
Allan
Not impressed.. The new face lifted Trooper is simply not as good as the original. The interior is sterile, the manager loud and intrusive, the food whilst plentiful is bland and not particularly imaginative. Can't say I hate the place, just won't be on my "must go again" list.

Been here a few times, great food and staff

Fantastic New Winter Menu. Went to the Trooper last Thursday. My partner had the piegeon for starters followed by Packington Pork, the crackling was just right. I had a very substantial soup and a delicious chunky fillet of cod. Even though we were quite full we forced down some home made ice creams, can thoroughly recommend the raspberry and the almond. Staff were delightful nothing to much trouble. Keep up the good work!
Gerard
Gerard. Despite a reservation I was kept waiting for a table for over half an hour. The waitress took our order in the bar which was not nice for my quests. She agreed to provide lots of vegatables. They did not arrive and when I asked for more she argued with me infront of my quests despite being prepared to pay whatever it costs. Dishes were delivered without vegatables. An over crowded rushed pub pretending to be a restuarant.Restaurant prices.

Sunday lunch. Loved it, really nice proper sunday dinner, great quality food at a sensible price- why would you ever go to a chain pub when there are great individual offerings out there like this

i want to go back there now, the thought of it makes me hungry...........and thirsty

The Long Wait. Very good food but absolutely appalling service. Our group of four adults and two children waited forty minutes from ordering the starters to receiving them and then another hour, yes, an hour! , before the main course arrived. No real apology so assume this is normal service. Were too fed up to have any puddings so can't comment on those.

Lunches. Eat or drink fairly regularly there now. Sunday lunch is great value. Mid week lunch fish & chips take some beating. Not the cheapest but if it is good do not mind paying.

Xmas Lunch 2010. Had Xmas lunch there 25/12/2010; 7 course meal. Overall was impressed with the service and the food although the sorbet course was just ice flavoured with strawberry juice so was disappointed with that.

Excellent Evening. The winter menu at the Trooper Inn is simply fantastic. We will need to return a few times this winter to try the delicious range on offer. We sat in the festive marquee that was warm, spacious and had a lovely atmosphere. The pork belly starter I had was mouth watering. The lamb shank my wife had was amazing, as was my duck main course. The deserts were to die for, I would recommend the crème brûlée that I had which again fantastic. Great pub, wonderful food, excellent evening!

Super Trooper. Very friendly & buzzy, seriously good food and a great evening out.

The Trooper Inn - Lichfield. The place was very busy yesterday, so the fact we had to wait to be served was understandable. I ordered the Sunday lunch with no meat as I am a vegetarian. I was very disappointed to get a plate with less basics, i e the potatoes than everyone else around the table and then not be offered my own bowl of vegetable, just some from the shared bowls handed out for the table. The gravy was not suitable for vegetarians, which is understandable. However some places do make the effort to offer you vegetarian gravy. Which is always a nice special touch. The food was good, but it was disappointing to be offer nothing as an alternative to the meet, ie additional vegetable etc, and then to be charged the same amount. Such a shame because everyone around the table then felt the service was poor and value was terrible.
Barry
Not yet worth the money.. We are pleased it's reopened and the new look is splendid. Our Sunday lunch was generally good but the discoloured new potatoes should never have been sent out and who thought up Broccoli and Spinach soup? Extra gravy was a nice touch but there were no serving spoons. It was busy. The service was attentive and the atmosphere good. No mints to sweeten the largish bill. Manoeuvring in the small car park is difficult. The car park had plenty of expensive cars so I doubt others thought it dear.

Miller. We went for a special meal and were so glad we did, the atmosphere and food were stunning. The staff friendly and welcoming. We were blown away by the great food we had to eat and the excellent wine. We shall return.

FORGET OLD REVIEWS. Actually you can forget reviews about The Trooper older than June 2010 as this venue has been transformed with new owners.

If The Trooper had a heyday or golden era, surely it is now. It has a long history and tradition but it is re-born again in the gastro-pub mode where the quality and service sets it apart.

The new owners have transformed The Trooper into a superb Restaurant and Free House that has got people talking. It is more than fine food in a relaxed atmosphere, it is a whole experience from the excellent menus created by Head Chef Steve Bates and his team, to the genial welcome of the bar and waiting staff.

The interior has been redesigned with sympathetically to the original Trooper building but in a contemporary style that gives a lovely open feeling, yet retaining the charm of the premises down to the real open fires.

As a free house the beers are wonderful with a choice of four real ales always available together with a fine selection of wines and spirits. The restaurant has now launched its Christmas menu and the emphasis, as always, is on 'fresh and local' produce. Fish comes fresh every day from Birmingham Fish Market; fresh meat from Russells of Shenstone; Packington Pork; and wine sourced by Worth Brothers in Lichfield.

Go try it for yourself. Following a couple of recommendations after the re-opening of this pub/restaurant, a friend and I went along for lunch today. Good, not overpriced wine list including a couple of personal favourites which was a bonus. Interesting lunch menu and relaxed, comfortable surroundings. I had fresh mussels which were fabulous, the mariniere sauce was perfect. My friend only had a caesar salad, but it was a PROPER one and the starter sized portion would have fed both of us! Service was friendly and efficient although there were probably only about 30 people in at the time. Like what they have done with outside - evening menu looked lovely - we will go back

Sunday luncch is excellent. Couldn't fault the food. Between six of us we chose Beef, chicken and lamb. Service is friendly and efficient. Food perfectly served. Plenty of vegetables cooked to perfection. This is our first Sunday visit but our fourth meal here in 2 months. It is always busy and that is a good sign. We wish them every success.

Lot of money for basic food. Went to the Trooper to try the Sunday lunch after it's big refurb and wish i hadn't bothered. The vegatables were cold - and I mean cold, and over cooked, which cannot be said for what they called roast potatoes. These had been par boiled, as they should be then roasted for all of 10min. No way were they roasted potatoes. The price for a very ordinary Sunday meal was an incredible £16 per person. Although I do have to say the meat was delicious. But I wont be trying it again.

Trroper at Wall. After a lavish refurbishment the trooper has just re-opened. The food is excellent prices vary but if you are a steak fan a Kobe steak will set you back £55.00 I am told it is well worth it but generally the menu isn't really expensive All the food is well presented and the chef Gino certainly knows his onions, all the meals are freshly prepared, Russells of Shenstone supply the meat so you know it will be good, puddings to die for and they even do cream teas - bliss. On a warm evening its great to sit on the patio with a glass of something cold. One of the popular beers is Village Idiot, as it's a free house expect many different beers on the bar list.

Trooper. I wouldnt recommend its been closed since christmas eve!
The Trooper
Well worth a visit 8 months ago but wouldn't recommend it now. to comment on the previous review the trooper was not open in jan 2009. it was closed oct 2008 until april 2009.

Nothing special. Went to the Trooper a few weeks ago, there is nothing special about this place, the furniture is ok but the food is something anybody could warm up.There was a bug eyed guy smoking a roll up in the car park and the sign looks very shabby. It may have been good 15 years ago but steer well clear now. There is a sign telling you where it is this gives the impression its exclusive. It's not, its living on its past reputation.
