A real gem if you like seafood or even if you're with someone who loves seafood.
The focus here is the food, the setting isn't fancy or gimmicky and the menu, while extensive is without any unnecessary frills.
For a fish restaurant, the vegetarian options were excellent and equally well designed and executed.
The dishes are largely simply prepared from fresh ingredients and presented without fuss.
All the staff were genuine, warm and welcoming with a good knowledge of the fare on offer.

We went to The Magpie Cafe on a recommendation and pre booked online in advance. We arrived early due to bad weather and the staff were able to seat us straight away, which was great. The restaurant is clean and welcoming. The waiting staff were brilliant and very knowledgeable about the food. Overall, the food was good. I had an issue with the fish and chips ( the batter was soggy and fish was over cooked) but the staff couldn't apologise more and rectified the situation for us. However, the portions are large and well priced for location. Would recommend the Magpie Cafe for anyone who loves fish or seafood and comfy portion size!

Could not fault it. What better place to have our wedding anniversary meal while staying in Whitby. Fabulous waitress serving us throughout. Food was delicious. Husband had cod and chips and I had the crab salad. Ample portions to suit the heartiest of appetites. Good wine selection too.

No doubt, an award recipient. Highly recommended. The queue is worth it.
The fish and Chips can't be missed. It's crunchy on the outside and tender on the Inside.
Had the 'magpie fish pie' as well and it was awesome. Perfect!!!
Join the queue! Don't hesitate

This is some of the best seafood I have had in the UK. The oysters are unbelievable, the crab dishes are succulent and flavorful! My dad had the vegan stroganoff which he enjoyed a lot. My partner also loved the classic fish & chips. I would recommend booking in advance as they are very crowded.

Had a fantastic meal, great service and staff are friendly and welcoming.
The only thing that let the night down was 2 unruly children who couldn't be tamed by their parents. I felt for the staff as most of the kids food ended up on the floor.

Probably the best complete meal we’ve ever had. Started with pickled cockles and mussels, then a seafood platter, then lemon sole deluxe, haddock and woof platter, garlic prawns with garlic potatoes polished off with a coke float. Simply unbelievable.

There are some places where you know that 7,000 plus good reviews can't be wrong, and this is one of them. There is a lot of choice on the menu from standard cod and chips to seafood specials - we went for seafood hotpot, mussels and chips, and haddock and salmon gratin, all of them excellent. Great service, and very good carafe of pinot grigio at a reasonable price. Probably one of the best seafood restaurants I've eaten in, definitely recommend.

Delicious and great value for what you get. Huge portions of tasty local seafood from off the coast of Yorkshire. Seafood platter to start is lovely and you get a really wide range to taste. They also do gluten free fish and chips, perfectly cooked. Staff really nice and helpful. They queue out the door for a reason!

Had a booking for 14:15 but due to the horrendous weather we thought we would get seated inside and enjoy some fish and chips. The waitress was lovely and helped with ordering although I wanted to try some lobster and she recommended getting half to share between 3, cost was no issue but she recommended this way and to have it warm with some garlic butter and it tasted lovely but there was not enough for 3 and wish I stuck to ordering a full lobster. The fish and chips were lovely and very good portion size even the 6oz for my grandad which was more than enough and my mum and myself having the 9oz. They were also very helpful with seating us upstairs and allowing us to use the lift for my grandad who has difficulty walking up steps which also meant he had easier access to the disabled toilets.
Would definitely go back again in future. Thanks

When ever I've visited Whitby there has always been a qué from the door at Magpie cafe. The restaurant has a great setting overlooking the harbour, service is good and staff are friendly. The quality of the fish and chips is very good. Mushy peas and a pot of tea are a must! The price is on the high side but is in line with other similar restaurants in the area.

Highly recommend, we started with the mussels and calamari which were some of the best we’ve ever had! The fish n chips also 👌. The portions are quite big so would consider sharing a few plates.
It does get busy, but they seat people pretty quick.

Best calamari, tasty seafood.
The crispy batter on the calamari was so good, big portion size and came with a nice dipping sauce. The calamari tasted very fresh, the best I’ve tried so far.
I also had a hot seafood pot that came with a warm ciabatta, the wine sauce they cooked the seafood in was so good. It’s a massive portion and had all the seafood possible (clams, scallops, mussels, salmon, you name it).
Really friendly service, I really recommend this place.

Always come here when we come to Whitby which is usually once a year.
My Wife had Sea Bass & Prawn starter with Grilled Cod and chips and peas
I went for seafood medle for starter
And really treated myself to Lobster Thermador.Swilled with a bott of local cider. No room for puddings! Love the Magpie.

The best fish and chips in the UK. The quality of the fish used is very high and the batter is always crispy and light. A must visit for anyone in Whitby.

We had a starter from “today special” - grilled scallops and 2 mains. Absolutely loved each bite. My partner had fish and chips and he said it was the best he ever tried.
Verity Caton
Best fish and chips in Whitby. We were lucky enough to walk straight in at 11:30. Perfectly cooked. Delicious. No more to say other than 10/10

it is delicious but maybe because it was the end of the day on easter weekend i felt the fish was a little bitter tasting in the batter, staff were wonderful and kind. the interior isn’t as cute or old school as i was hoping it would be, feels a little packed and feels a bit like a school canteen inside ? anyway still iconic and so good but maybe takeaway and eating on the beach would be lovely if you can hide from the seagulls

Have eaten here 5 times now and always loved it but this time was slightly disappointed. Ordered the 'sauteed' salt and pepper squid well i suppose if sauteed means swimming in butter soup i got what i ordered. The same can be said of the hot seafood pot i ordered, just swimming in butter. So although the fish was lovely i left with a very, very buttery taste in my mouth. I would eat here again but wouldnt select those dishes again.

This is in my mind without doubt the finest fish and chip restaurant in the country. We have tried many , but this is the best.
Garry Ely
Lovely food. Try to leave room for pudding. Even the small portions fill the plate. Fish available with or without batter.
Dave Harper
Lovely fish and chips although the batter on one fish was a little undercooked otherwise this would be 5 stars. Service excellent and staff were friendly and helpful

Childhood memories came flooding back. Introduced the kids to the joy that is the Magpie. They loved it! Food as fantastic as ever and only ten minutes to queue! We'll be back😉

Just returned home from my fourth visit to the area and the Magpie was a must, just as it has been on previous visits. Great food, generous portions. A must when in Whitby!

The food was beautiful , especially the fish and the service was great (top floor) but we were a little disappointed with pudding. Not sure what they had done to the cream but it didn’t taste like plain whipped cream whatever was in it didn’t compliment it. Would definitely return though

Delicious! Have been searching for great fish and chips since I arrived from Australia and finally found them! I had hoped to have the skate, but was told that would be a 10 minute wait, so stomach rumbling I decided to get cod which was available straight away. The batter was on point, crispy and full of flavour, and NOT oily at all. The fish inside was excellent quality, flaky and white as snow. Chips were cooked to perfection too. This is a professional show.

Most people in Yorkshire, especially those who have visited Whitby will tell you that the best place to get fish and chips in Whitby, or even on the whole East Yorkshire coast is The Magpie. Long queues are associated with both its restaurant and takeaway and it has become somewhat of a Yorkshire coast landmark, it has afterall been serving fish and chips since 1937. With celebrity chef accolades (Rick Stein has sung its praises, remarking that I opened his eyes to how good a chip can really be) it's one of the most, if no the most, popular places to go in Whitby.

Went there with a few others. Heard this place was quite a well known spot but didn't quite know how to be too excited about fish and chips. I stand corrected. Lovely quick service and beautiful food. Huge piece of battered Haddock and chunky fries. There was nothing too ordinary about it. Highly recommended.Food 4/5, Service 3.5/5, Portion 4.5/5, Price 3.5/5

Fish and chips just as they should be. I hadn't been to Whitby in excess of 20 years so turned to urbanspoon for advice on the best fish and chips in town. The magpie was top of the list so we walked in the door 5 minutes after opening time.

I noted there were already a number of people sat at tables with menus despite only being open for five minutes.

Service was quick and delightful; our waitress was simply lovely. Food came quick and was amazing. My dining companions ordered regular haddock and chips and I ordered the small cod and chips.

The size of the haddock was ginormous! The small cod and chips also looked somewhat overwhelming but filled the stomach just right.

Both the haddock and cod were amazing, no fault could be found.

On leaving around 12:45pm, about 10 people were queuing to be seated, a true testament to a great restaurant.

The whole experience was an absolute delight. I just hope it's not another 20 years before we're back.

Our first excursion was in the seaside, port town of Whitby. It was such a lovely town, I was impressed by the fact there was a queue nearly outside every restaurants that served Fish & Chips and the town itself smells Fish & Chips apart for the top part on the hill near Whitby Abbey. Of course the longest queue was where my friend wanted to go: The Magpie Café, but he told me it was the one of the best Fish & Chips in the UK. We waited 40 minutes which wasn't that bad as it was pretty warm and sunny outside. I'm not sure I will have queue that much under the rain. The menu is mainly fish dishes (fried or grilled) but they also have vegetarian options, I laughed when I saw this option as it reminds me of Chris Pople tweet from the 16th April (see below), but well I guess restaurants especially in small town had to please everyone. However my friend and I are not vegetarian so we both ordered a regular cod and chips each and we shared a side of mushy peas as the waiters told us the regul

... it’s definitely a slice of Yorkshire that you shouldn’t miss.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the food being served at The Magpie Cafe, a North Yorkshire fish and chip institution. And, judging by the queues down their steps come rain or shine, it holds a special place in the hearts of many many others. This is no mean feat considering every other business in this goth-friendly seaside resort is a fish and chip shop. However, the Magpie doesn’t just serve incredible fish and chips. Kipper pate, local oak roasted salmon, seafood stew, grilled woof and lobster thermidor were just a couple of the dishes which conspired to distract me from the task in hand… There was nothing regular (neither size nor flavour) about my regular haddock and chips (£11.95). Every mouthful of fish was a joy – the perfectly flaky fillet enrobed by thin, crisp, grease-free and perfectly puffed up batter. Chips were also things of beauty - chunky, crisp, fluffy and ever so slightly meaty (that'll be the beef dripping they're fried in). They were a delight to dunk in a pot

This is good old simple fish and chips. The fish from here is definitely fresh and came with a batter that was non-greasy, crispy and light in flavour so that it doesn’t detract from the fish.
