We thought you would like to know that The King's Head was awarded 5 stars on gastrohub. Here is the review from the site.
Today we continued our theme of revisiting pubs. We went for The Kings Head in Wickham, a five star pub which we had high expectations for. We remembered it as a proper pub selling top quality food, so were keen to see if that was still the case..
We were greeted in precisely the way you would wish to be greeted when entering a really good pub. Made to feel immediately welcome and offered drinks. After collecting said drinks, we were proffered menus and invited to take a table. After taking a seat we were both quite sure that we had ended up on the same table that we had occupied on our last visit. It was conveniently near the specials board, though there wasn't that much on there, perhaps a soup and two mains. The menu read pretty well, though if we were being picky there could have been a bit more choice and seasonality, some good old English comfort food as we head inexorably in to Winter. I chose fish and chips while Dad went for lamb and mint sausages with mash and onion rings.
As we've found with several pubs of late, the pricing was a touch on the steep side. Average mains came in at around £13 and sandwiches, although they were rather posh sandwiches, were between £8 and £9, with chips added for an extra £1. The other thing that struck us was a side order of vegetables at a whopping £3.50, I'd need them to be some pretty good vegetables.
When the food came to visit our table, it was indeed as good as we remembered it. My chips were homemade and delicious and the fish was perfect with crispy batter. The only thing I would change would be the peas. Firstly I would offer mushy peas and secondly, if I provided standard peas I wouldn't put them in a little dish, it makes it quite awkward to eat them. The sausages, mash and onion rings on Dad's plate were all of a high standard and were enjoyed mightily. Curiously, as we discussed the merits of the pub and its food, we were asked to complete a survey about the pub and its food, that's a first.
This is without doubt a good pub. The pub itself has a good feel about it and also has a substantial garden complete with play area. It also has a separate building out the back with skittles, which is available to hire. As mentioned, the food is of a high standard, though I can't help but be irked by the overpricing. Even so, I would certainly recommend this pub which we also said in our survey. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Wickham and no doubt will someday return.
Absolutely beautiful roast dinner. Staff were attentive, polite and friendly. Perfect amount of food and well worth the money. Highly recommend.
Really lovely meal tonight: excellent service, beautifully cooked food and well presented. Sea bass and cod loin was to die for.
Had a fantastic evening in there. The food was amazing the band they had on were brilliant, and The staff were very friendly and even helped us get a taxi at the end of the night when we couldn’t get hold of one. Thought it was a little pricy on the food but after seeing it and eating I couldn’t complain as it was so good. Will be back very soon. :))
Had a lovely roast dinner and dessert on mothers day . Staff were very friendly and polite . Did not have to wait very long for our food. Will definitely be going back .

Came in during a fairly busy service and was greeted by a tall friendly member of staff, he was attentive and phenomenally well suited to customer service. The beer quality was high and the cocktails were tasty too. Food arrived promptly and was quality, we had no complaints what so ever. Me and boyfriend will definitely come back, even he was gawking over the attractive man behind the bar with a mullet.
Lovely wine selection and friendly staff, nice outdoor area which is great for summer.
Visited here this afternoon (Friday) with my 13 year old son after a local hike with the dog. The facilities are lovely and well maintained. Beautiful garden and outdoor covered seating area. Everything was very clean, including the toilets. Food was good with plenty of choice and not too expensive. Staff were fabulous. Very polite, welcoming and no request was too much. Even the dog got a fuss and treat. Haven't been for few years but will definitely be making it a regular pit stop from now on. Thank you for a lovely lunch!
Had a very nice pie here. Very thick tasty gravy and Al dente veg. Would reccomend. Staff are very nice also
Absolutely lovely, wonderful service from young Welsh lady behind bar, great food and definitely best Guinness I've had in uk at this moment.
Went back this evening, and great service from other staff that was really friendly and excellent Guinness again.
I will definitely recommend to other foodie and Guinness friends 😋
Really lovely fish and chips outside. Mushy peas were great too.
Nice distance between tables and waiting staff were really helpful.
App was fairly easy to use.
Limited menu at the moment, due to COVID, but food was excellent.
I had battered haddock with triple cooked chips, which were nice and crispy.
Two things that made this a great place to eat. 1. They're not just dog friendly but welcome dogs with open arms. 2. The food was really good. It wasn't a huge menu but still had plenty of options. And finally, the staff were really friendly and welcoming.....wait...thats 3 things
Great food, Beautifullly presented. Very large portions, at a very reasonable price. Varied menu and chefs specials available. We went for burger and a pork roast, which were top notch. Food served Sunday evening too!
Visited the King's Head today. For a quick drink. It was so refreshing to have an excellent welcome from a Male barman. Who was professional friendly & happy. I cover 50 Different Public Houses in my role at work. All Bar personnel should take a tip fro. This Barmans attitude & social skills.
Excellent Public House. Eith lovely large Gardens & indoor courtyard area. Highly recommended 👌
Very dog friendly..inside and out (and with the dog covered in mud!)
Came for three visits. Twice had food. BLT sandwiches delicious and good price. Proper bits of bacon. Also Nachos delicious. The cheese sandwich with beef tomato yummy too. TV in the court yard so could watch the Tennis too. Huge garden as well out the back. Staff very friendly. Would recommend and will be back
Nice pub. Pleasant staff. The skittles alley very good for hiring a group function.
Sadly they are not ablecto serve GF food.
BEST Sunday lunch out in a long time! Roast chicken tasted delicious with lots of lovely veg and roast potatoes. Cosy pub, which we were able to sit and eat with our puppy in the bar area. Definitely recommend and shall be back. 😃
Lovely Sunday Roast. Went at 3pm which seemed a good time to go as it was not too busy.
Staff were really friendly and welcoming.
Not used to spending 17£ for a burger and there was nothing special about it ..no garnish, came with cheese but so small it just as well not been in there, just an ordinary burger with frozen chips, staff were welcoming though
Visited on Saturday evening, with friends, excellent range of beers and gins on offer, wicked music playlist and really helpful staff.
