On holiday in York during Ebor Festival, the pubs and brew houses are packed. Duke of York was quieter and less raucous, gorgeous food, excellent staff. Can not recommend highly enough.
Cracking food, brilliant selection of beer. Very friendly staff who brought my dog some water and treats! Would definite recommend!

Incredible! Very tasty meals, desserts (not pictured because we inhaled them). I had rhubarb gin, so smooth and tasty. Trout was thick, cooked perfectly, sirloin with the best chips and onion rings, unlike any I’ve had! Onion ring batter was perfection. Quaint, moody, charming atmosphere, fantastic service!!
Superb experience a few weekends ago. We took our children and dog for Sunday roast. The atmosphere was exactly what you’d want for Sunday lunch, the food superb and despite it being so busy, the young waiter was faultless in his care and attention. I would give it 10* if I could!
An accidental find for us, we had read no reviews, we were looking for a menu that featured vegetables in the meal. This lovely old pub delivered. We started with the gin special, artisan flavored gins. Our meals were excellent, perfectly seasoned steak and ale pie, with hints of blue cheese in the gravy and pork sausage in an amazing unctuous gravy. The vegetable sides were perfectly cooked carrots, parsnips, leafy greens. I still have the mouthful umami taste as I write this review. Well done Duke of York team.
Got in last minute for a meal, ordered with 7 minutes to spare before the kitchen closed for the night. Good staff, rapid service, a nice place to spend an hour or two.
Came to try the barista stout, recently shown on the Facebook page. I was looking for pubs in the area and this had caught my eye, it was lovely and I'm glad I visited, some nice unusual beers on offer!
A superb hearty pub lunch.
After a long walk around York, this was the only place that really stood out for us to stop & refuel.
The cosy pub was spotless, inviting & lovely staff who were engaging.
My partner ordered the fish -chips-peas (always an old favourite) & I ordered the steak & ale pie with mash & veg.
We waited approx 15 minutes max for our meals & they did not dissapoint in any way.
The fish wasn't greasy & very flavoursome & it was plentiful (like a whale 😁) generous portion of chips & peas.
My pie had a very generous filling & the meat was extremely tasty & tender. The pastry didn't taste dry or lardy, just delicious.
For the two mains & 2 beers it was just short of £40
The best pub lunch I have had in a very long time. I highly recommend & thank you to the staff for making us feel welcome.
Will be back when we are back in York.
Great pub well worth a visit.
Lovely food and drinks, really enjoyed our visit, nice to find proper chips and decent vegetarian options 😋
Booked a meal here for our group of 12, very accommodating when booking the table , just requested a preorder which meant our food was served promptly after we were seated. The food was so delicious 😋 and good quality, all our party said it was a place they would re visit. Staff really friendly and nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend as a good place to eat and drink whilst in York.
We booked the Duke of York for a birthday event and we cannot rate the Duke of York highly enough. We arranged most of the event over email (James was incredibly helpful), all I needed to do was drop off a cake and some decorations. When we arrived that evening the room looked brilliant and everyone said how great it looked. The buffet was generous and gorgeous! Everyone behind the bar was really helpful too and prices we certainly in line or cheaper than what you'd expect in central York. We had an absolutely brilliant time and whole heartedly recommend the Duke of York for anyone looking for a party venue.
