Wow. The Camembert beet pie was better than any pie I ate in the two years I lived in the midlands. The meat pie was super good and filling. A couple of family members split that.
The atmosphere was very comfortable, nice, and historic. I was amazed the place wasn't packed! This is on my definite must visit list when I come back to York
Awesome pub to through back a few pints and chill with great people , sit back relax enjoy the cool vibe !
This place is beautifully old, with wooden paneling and that sense of a true british pub with a good old fire.
We had popped in for a quick drink , I was so delighted of the many different ales and craft beers on and off tap ..the staff were just as homely as the pub :)
While Sat down next to the warming fire we eyed up these giant platters going back to and fro filled with Sunday roast tasties.. it was then I vowed to come back..
We had planned to check out the Chinese with a friend but after a no show we retraced our steps. Unfortunately the Sunday roasts sell out FAST so you have to be quick. Unfortunately we were not fast enough..
To be honest I then struggled to decide what to have ,I Mean the fish and chips looked fab but the portion was intimidating..so I opted for a red pepper soup and a veggie version of fish and chips. The fish was substituted with Hallumi and for an extra pound I upgraded my fries to sweet potato...
The wait wasn't bad and the chef personally delivered our food . However when he went away I realised that they had forgotten to upgrade my fries..I wouldn't have minded as much but these weren't homemade..which is a shame as everything else here oozes with home made stuff .. the manageress was so apologetic and came back several times to ensure we were enjoying the meal..
The soup had been nice but forgettable, the halloumi cheese was a great idea for a battered cod substitute..my other halfs pie was also fantastically made...
I rate this place highly for the service, ambiance and drink selection..however I was let down by the food slightly..I would defiantly try and grab a roast dinner though.
Hidden off the beaten track. Very nice place. Serves decent beer and the food is very good.
On a busy day, it can be fairly tight. But still worth going in.
The oldest pub in York. I highly recommend eating here on a Sunday for the Sunday dinner but caution you to come early as they run out quickly. Also the steak pie and fish & chips are good as well. This is another place where you take note of your table number and order at the bar. Some of the tables in the front room are a bit wobbly so be careful with your drinks.
The sign across the middle of the road, drawing your attention to this pub, is something I have never seen before.
Its a nice pub with lots of different rooms, but can get quite cramped! Must have been horrible when it was being used to house wounded soldiers during the English civil war. Yes it is that old!
Fairytale of New York from Kelham Island was a decent dark beer and not too strong at a safe but tasty 4.2pc
This was a lovely pub with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Also it's extremely DOG friendly!
I highly recommend the classic steak and ale pie along with a proper lager. Also the mac and cheese was UNBELIEVABLE.
Pro-tip: Try to visit York during the week and not the weekend in the autumn. The restaurants and sights won't be too crowded.
Big pub in a nice location. Not too pricey and good selection of real ales. Fairly modern feel to it, especially for it is, without feeling out of place. Plenty of seats but some up stairs... Dog friendly as well
Nice place but the veggies with the roast dinner were undercooked and a bit lacklustre and disappointing. Menu description sounded better than the meal tasted. Nice friendly staff and interesting building though, would go for a drink only next time.
Located in the heart of York, this is one of the oldest pubs in the city. Cozy place, super friendly staff, delicious food and great draught beers served. If you want to stop to restore yourself after a long walk through the city, this is the best place. It deserves 5 stars!
Instead of just a bit of flaky pastry sitting atop a portion of steak stew, the steak & ale pie ... was actually a pie! (You'd be amazed at how often that isn't the case) And yes, it was rather yummy.
However, the brazed cabbage that accompanied it was as raw as the day it was pulled out of the ground - not a patch on what my other half cooks (cabbage = barely one ⭐)
Drinks-wise, this is a CAMRA (campaign for real ale) approved pub, so no problems there (5 ⭐).
Service was friendly and efficient, and dog friendly (5 ⭐)
Also, weather permitting, there are THREE beer gardens to choose from
Has that old pub feel but smells of stale alcohol. Not all historic pubs smell like this, I recommend they do something about it.
The food is good, not great. Not sure if I’d be in a rush to go back.
I’m still giving 4 stars as the location is right in the center and has huge potential.
My recommendation to Management:
- you have a very valuable historic pub, the food should follow with high standards.
- the stale alcohol smell will put people off.
Really nice pub, friendly staff, clean and tidy with a fantastic choice of beers. Really worth a visit.
The atmosphere is very friendly and cozy, staff super nice. There's a lot of different sitting areas which are comfortable and spacious. Food was awesome! We ordered the vintage cheddar and bacon burger, french fries with their home seasoning were delicious!
Lovely pub. Walked past it so many times. It's hidden away. Nice touch.. Lovely food and staff are very attentive
Despite being blackmailed by CAMRA this is a cracking pub such a great range of beers and ales terrific ciders I personally witnessed the food being served & can only wish I’d not been for food earlier
The staff were very friendly & I was impressed with the customer service when a visitor from 🇺🇸 asked for a green king ipa the server gave them a taster first due to it not being everyone’s cup of tea due to the hoppiness flavour
Can not be more impressed with a boozer despite having been in the trade for over 30 years
