This was our favourite place we visited whilst in York, although we come up here at least once a year it's nearly always in the winter when this beautiful building is shut.
This place you have to book a time for a guided tour, but if you have to wait awhile it's no problem, you can look around the gardens, have a root around the second hand books or visit the excellent 👌 tearoom.
Definitely ,one place to look around if you have a couple of hours in York to spare.
It was lovely to be able to walk around both houses and gardens. Stunning views and Lots of information sheets to read about the properties and very informative friendly staff. A must to visit.
What a fascinating place, firstly, you do need to book as this is a guided tour. We did call in and manage to get on the tour 25 mins later, which was fine as we could stroll around the garden whil waiting. This was midweek so it may be a longer wait at the weekend, bank holiday etc. The house is really interesting and our guide was very interesting throughout the tour. Would highly recommend this NT house.
National Trust property just off the Cathedral. Nice gardens (free visit), but the house is only with a guided tour (and you must pre-book it).
The tour lasts for an hour, so think about your schedule before booking it.
Tip for NT passport stamp hunters: there’s a National Trust shop nearby (1’ walking distance) with an extra stamp, so you will get a 2x1 today!
A really lovely experience. The gardens are lovely to walk around and smell the spring flowers. We are national trust members so this was an unexpected find. The tour lasted over an hour and there was only 8 of us on the tour so it felt very intimate and questions you had could be answered. The guides were very down to earth but also really knowledgable. Definitely allows you to connect with the area.
Visited 6/23 with a group of friends whilst on holiday. Unfortunately we arrived on spec but too late for a guided tour. However, one of the guides was kind enough to talk to us in the garden and tell us about the house, including story of the ghosts of the Roman 9th legion. Beautiful exterior and gardens (which you can visit free) but obviously can't comment on the interior.
We've waited quite some time (three years) to visit here due to closures and not visiting York on a day when the house was open, we weren't disappointed.
Absolutely fascinating house and not what we were expecting.
Our tour was very intimate as there were only five of us including our two excellent tour guides, Wendy and Lech, who were very patient with our many questions, knowledgeable and good humoured.
Definitely worth a visit.
A mention for the lovely cafe staff too.
I'm only posting a few pics so as to not spoil it for others.
Very interesting guided hour tour with an excellent knowledgeable guide. Surprised how big and how many rooms to see. Also cafe with good food and nice staff.
Absolutely brilliant stunning property and great guided tours very knowledgeable well worth a visit
