A fascinating and welcoming place. The Bar Convent is home to the Congregation of Jesus, a remarkable group of Roman Catholic religious sisters. The Convent is full of history yet remains a vibrant living place where all are made to feel at home. The chapel and heritage centre are beautiful, and the café and shop are well worth a visit.

What a find!!! This is the most beautiful and tranquil place i have stayed. The welcome we received was warm and the receptionist (Phil?) couldnt do enough for us. The bedroom was toasty warm and immaculately clean. The freshly cooked breakfast was delicious - and hot!!! Ive booked alreasy to come back.

The Bar Convent was a great place to stay. It was very comfortable and everyone there made my stay very enjoyable. The History of the Convent and the careful way it has all been documented is very user friendly to catch up with. Well done all concerned and great to see the sister’s wonderful contribution to the Faith of people in York for such a long time as well as their present eandeavours in the lives of people all over the world who desperately need their care.

This was a truly fabulous place to stay- so central to all York has to offer. Friendly, patient and kind staff. Very clean. Comfortable beds. Overlooked the garden - lovely. Great that there was a (separate)room with washing machine/ drier and ironing board, along with a kitchenette with microwave and fridge. Amazing fresh breakfasts.(delicious scrambled eggs) Sometimes went the wrong way on second floor! A bit of a maze! I do wish local parking had been less expensive but that is nothing to do with Bar Convent.

I love staying here! Amazing location and the room was really cozy. The breakfast was amazing! I wasn't expecting so many options on the breakfast menu. The staff was super friendly and was super helpful. The food was amazing! The sandwich was huge and delicious! I will never forget! The front desk was fantastic. She could arrange to find us a fan because it was really hot there that day and the rooms don't have AC. That made a huge difference.

Simply lovely place, stayed here since 1981 when I boarded as a school girl (top floor room for 3 years!) and now I return as a regular visitor finding every excuse to visit York and stay here. Last weekend I stayed for our school year reunion and it made it even more special an experience than it is staying here every time. Helpful friendly staff host your stay. I book direct to ensure every penny goes to the Bar Convent and not to booking agents. The Bar Convent Guest house website is efficient and easy to use.

This was a lovely place to spend a few days with some friends. The rooms were clean and comfortable, staff were all friendly and helpful and we were within easy reach of the railway station and the city centre. One small quibble was that the lights in the corridors reacted to people walking along them which meant one of our party (in room 207, which has glass facing out onto a corridor) was woken up at midnight one night and early every morning. The windows to the corridor have blinds but they still let the light in and blackout blinds would have been much better. Apart from that one small point everything was perfect.

We received a warm welcome, and our room was very comfortable with easy access via the lift. The restaurant provided a great breakfast with a wide choice. The house and gardens are lovely, and on the doorstep of the attractions of York, and just a few minutes walk from the station. I would definitely stay here again.

Great location, 5min away from the station and 10-15min away from main attractions. The hotel is just beautiful and the staff are the friendliest and most attentive. The breakfast selection was great, too. My partner had continental pastries, which were fresh and delicious yogurt. I had full English, which was made to perfection! Would definitely stay at the same hotel when in York next time

Fantastic unusual accommodation in the centre of York. 2 mins walk from the train station and next to Micklegate. The staff are warm and friendly. The bedrooms are immaculate with en-suite, tea/coffee facilities and smart tv and lovely bedding. The building is from the Reformation and has a fascinating history. There is an exquisite walled garden, a ‘secret’ chapel with a priest’s hole and a reliquary. Breakfast was good and there’s a cafe and museum on site. I will always stay here in future.

Just a few minutes from the station and in easy reach of the City Centre, this is perfectly located. But it is the surprise of it's history accompanying the beauty of the building that makes this place special. Thank you for the breakfast too!

Fantastic stay at the Bar convent whilst visiting York and friends. Will definitely be back. Hospitality in all ways was fantastic and staff were so welcoming and lovely. It is really close to the city centre and room, food and facilities were all great. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. I also enjoyed chatting to other guests. This visit was a little rushed due to work commitments but I definitely want to come back for longer and spend time relaxing in the lovely garden with a good book- the weather (thunder and lightning) didn’t allow it this time but will certainly come back for a peaceful break in future. I really appreciated being able to store my luggage on the day I left so I could go into the city centre. I used to live in York and still love the city so I think I shall make this my little retreat when I need time out. Thank you to all.
