Our second visit here, and it lived up to the first visit. Lovely staff, quick service, beautiful old building. The Bakewell Pudding & custard was a real treat, gorgeous pastry. Our friends had the savoury scones and said they were really good too.
mr kiplings aint a patch on a real n proper bakewell pudding, if you visit the peek district be sure to visit bakewell & sample a real bakewell pudding you wont be diserpointed 20/10
Despite the fact there's no proof that it was ever spawned here, for those of you yet to witness beautiful Bakewell and its accidentally created pudding (but may have tried one of the delicious Mr Kipling equivalents) you can sample the original as either a pudding, a slice (with or without almonds) and as a tart.
The slice and tart comes with icing, the pudding without and there is another slice available with almond's topping. Bakewell slice and tart basically consists of jam and frangipane housed in shortcrust pastry with either icing or almonds (with a cherry on the tart) on top. A pudding loses the icing and is simply housed by pastry, in this case, flakey.
So, is it any good? Well, Mr Kipling's have certainly taken full commercial advantage of this baby, and they are hard to beat. However, as shelf life is an issue going against these exceedingly good cake makers, the freshness and extra delicious original Bakewell versions do edge it, with better frangipane, lovely jam and pastry, although the icing on Mr Kipling's are better. I'm still hungry for more jam, and in truth, while the Bakewell pudding is nice, it lacks the glamour and add ons of the slice or tart.
Certainly catering for the tourists and those with a bigger buck to bang, downstairs offers everything from takeout tarts and classic cakes to jams, honeys and local beers. There's also a sitting area at the back, souvenirs and information, cool for photographs. Upstairs houses a posh cafe that, although pretty, was supremely dear, dear.
As the cold, rainy weather played on outside, on the inside the wait time was such we opted for scones and drinks instead, rather than traditional Bakewell based deserts. A smart move, as taking out not only saved time, but money.
The Latte was burnt and no good, but the Hot Chocolate was splendid. Mixed into the Latte for a Costa style Mocha rescued the drink thankfully, but 1 star for that particular (latte) moment.
The scones were decent - not the best ever but special with the specular jam and cream. What a moment! A pricey affair where food is concerned, although a fantastic experience. The locals aren't likely to visit here regularly, we'd argue, and for a few of the concerns raised, no full house rating here.
This was so good we ended up eating there three times. Morning, afternoon, late afternoon.
I’m not a big fan of English Breakfast, I must admit. What I was served was good and not soaked in fat and so, which I really appreciated. My poached egg was unfortunately a hard boiled. I was on a 4 out of 5. The service and coffee was really good and definitely took it up a notch.
Then I tasted the Bakewell pudding, and my good God, it was delicious! I’m not much into sweet deserts, and I did not expect much of it due to previous food experiences eating out in UK. But wow. I fell in love.
Later I returned to have smashed Avocado. A brave move to spice it a bit up from the kitchen’s side had me praising the place. 5 out of 5. It was a proper size meal, fresh and tasty. The poached egg was perfect.
Last visit I had Croque Monsieur. Not many outside France gets it right. But I was not disappointed. I end up on a 5 out of 5 despite the bell pepper in the salad. Bold move.
I can’t wait to return - I’ll return for the food at this specific place. Thank you!
The Bakewell pudding at this place was absolutely delightful! Its texture and flavor were spot on. However, I must admit that the tart was a tad too sweet for my liking. Maybe I should have ordered Almond flakes instead of iced topping. On the bright side, the coffee served was also excellent, complementing the dessert perfectly. The overall experience was enjoyable, and I appreciate the effort put into creating such a tasty treat. Definitely worth trying! 🥧☕😊
Nice little shop. I must admit I only knew of this place due to watching Susan Calman's Grand Day Out TV show. The food was fresh and lovely. The staff was very helpful and welcoming. Will return if I'm ever back In the area. We had lunch in the restaurant upstairs then took fresh Bakewell away with us for later. Must admit there was so much to choose from I struggled to pick what I wanted lol.
A must visit! My first visit to Bakewell with my partner lead me here and it did not disappoint. The service from Callan was impeccable, restaurant was lovely and the Bakewell Tart/ Pudding were the best I’ve ever eaten in my life. Cannot wait to go again
Went with my husband and 18 month old. Food was delicious and came very quickly. We had lunch and then had some tea with the Bakewell pudding and a Bakewell tart. Atmosphere was very lovely and cosy. Staff were friendly ☺️
We had taken away Pastel denata, the famous Bakewell tart and Bakewell Pudding from here..all are super delicious.
Staff was lovely. We didn't get chance to sit and eat there as it was nearly their closing time.
Didn't visit the shop/bakery on the ground floor, but visited the restaurant on the first floor. Really nice seating area.
Slightly disappointed with the selection for soft drinks, and the blender not being in operation so no freakshakes were available. But the cake (and wide selection of cake!) did make up for this. If we had had longer we would have had a meal as they all looked fantastic too.
Definitely worth a visit if you want to experience a Bakewell pudding in a traditional setting and to eat in, rather than just taking away with you.
Pictured; hot chocolate and the sticky toffee and ginger cake.
I was quickly sat and served in the cafe by friendly professional staff. A very tasty Bakewell pudding served with custard and a pot of tea made for a delicious brunch. However, later in the day I came back to the shop and there was an extensive queue snaking through the shop. A lot of breads didn't have prices and the selection of baked savouries at the counter weren't labelled or priced, forcing people to inquire which slowed the serving.
Came to Bakewell as part of a holiday and this place was highly recommended and I now understand why! Ordered Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart and they were both extremely delicious 😋 the portion sizes are extremely large and great atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this place to all tourists like me. 😄
Very busy shop and restaurant. My mum wanted a proper bakewell pudding not tart so we had to go here and buy her one to take home. Service was great.
