The Gate

Ah, the Gate. We've revisited this gastro pub many times and it never fails to impress. It's a shame that many locals are aware of its excellence, as it can get very busy and parking can require some creative driving or parking across the road. However, once you manage to secure a spot and make your way inside, the welcoming atmosphere will make you forget all about the parking struggles. The service is always top-notch, even on the busiest of nights or weekends. The staff are friendly and efficient, and they go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience. The menu may not vary greatly over the years, but that's because they've already perfected it. Each dish is consistently good, from the classic fish and chips that are always spot on, to the generous and tasty steak and ale pie. They simply keep a high standard year after year and never fail to deliver. Overall, the Gate is a fantastic gastro pub that we keep returning to for a reason. Despite the parking challenges and the crowds, we know that once we're inside, we'll be treated to great food and excellent service. It's a must-visit for anyone in the area, and we'll definitely be back again soon.

I would call this place a restaurant and not a pub- table service only. The menu has a good selection of options, including appealing specials. The service is prompt and friendly. The main area felt quite warm in terms of ambiance. We sat in the enclosed patio as we had dogs with us. The beer garden looked great but unfortunately it was raining so we could not try it out. The food was good but nothing to make effort to experience (the pie was good but the veggies on the side were mushy. The chicken tortilla was good but the salad on the side was blah). I would suggest this as a great option for a family group to enjoy a nice meal.
