Our dining experience with a 2-course meal for two people was truly exceptional. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was inviting, with soft lighting and a cozy atmosphere. The service was impeccable, as the staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.
For our first course, we had separate starters. The flavors were well-balanced, and the presentation was impeccable. Each bite was a culinary delight, setting the stage for what was to come.
The main course was the highlight of the meal. We chose different dishes, and both were cooked to perfection. The ingredients were fresh, and the chef's expertise shone through in every bite. The portion size was just right, leaving us satisfied but not overly full.
Overall, the 2-course meal was a memorable culinary journey. It was a fantastic afternoon, and we left with smiles on our faces. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special meal out.
First time I've ever visited the Refreshment Rooms, after a recommendation from a friend. I was pleasantly surprised. Probably the best pub/restaurant I've been to in years. Nice clean pub with polite helpful staff and unbelievable food. I had the Slow Cooked Belly Pork, which was unbelievable. My wife had Steak and Ale Pie which she really enjoyed also. Loads to choose from on the Menu and all sounds great, so I'll definitely be going back soon. Had a good selection of beers on draught too. I had Peroni and San Miguel. We also had a dessert to share. My new favourite place to eat. I cant wait to go back.
This place was a recommendation by a colleague and I was not disappointed. Local grown veg and home cooking. Reasonably cost and good service. I would recommend to book a table and visit.
If I’m in the area again, I will drop in for a meal for sure.
The service was excellent, always smiling and eager to help. My wife had the special of the day, the sole and greek potatoes - very fresh and full of flavour, my son had the fish and chips was devoured very quickly, I had the pork belly for starters and that was very tasty (from the family), I had the piri piri chicken, bit dry even with the sauce to go with it. Daughter had the steak and ale pie - the pie and chips were very salty and only she managed to eat half of the pie, therefore wife and I eat the other half.. Left the chips. Atmosphere was good.
Amazing food & great atmosphere, staff were really friendly, good prices as well for the size of the dishes ~ can't wait to come back!
We had 3 starters, garlic mushrooms, pork belly, and spring rolls. We also had 3 mains consisting of Racks of Ribs, Fish and Chips, and Chicken Burger. All came with the usual fries, salad and sauces. All meals were well presented and tasted delicious. It was my 1st visit and will definitely be going again.
We also had 2 wines a coke and a pot of tea and total was about £85 . They also have special offer days on so I taken a picture of the menu. The meal was eaten too quickly to grab a photy as it was so nice 👍.... recommended.
Also lovely view of the river mersey and venue for hire
We took advantage of the Refreshment Room’s £££GRAND WEDDING PACKAGE and took 24 guests there after our wedding ceremony. Ian, one of the managers, was brilliant in agreeing the arrangements in advance. We were able to make 5 choices of starter, mains and desserts available for our guests to choose from on the day, so that we could tailor the menu to our guests’ choice. The food was delicious on the day, the staff professional and friendly, attentive and responsive to our needs, with a relaxed, friendly vibe. Nothing was too much trouble! We were seated in the lovely Garden Room, which meant that we had our own private space for guests and children in the party to move around and mingle. It was just perfect and fantastic value for money.
We had such a memorable time and would highly recommend.
This place had a Lovely atmosphere, food was Gorgeous, plenty of it too. Prices a bit steep I thought! Most of the staff were friendly. Would go again 😊
My original review is below but I've been back again today and once again the Refreshment Rooms did not disappoint! The occasion was for me to treat my Mum and Dad to a joint celebration 70th birthday meal and I had asked when I reserved the table if they could possibly put a candle in the dessert when it came out. I have been several times since my original review but my Mum and Dad have not. Given all the recent weather we were so incredibly lucky that the sun shone... really showing the place off it it's best. Mum has a smaller appetite so she was really pleased that they had the over 60s smaller plates which is one of the reasons why I booked to eat here. The food was as delicious as always and the lovely staff not only brought a candle in the dessert but they also sang happy birthday as well! Incredible service and it's a new place for my Mum and Dad to add to their list of places to stop off for a meal!
Original review:
I have heard many of my friends rave about the Refreshment Rooms and so I had high expectations and hoped I wasn’t expecting too much. I booked a meal for three people at 2pm today (Sunday) and at the time of booking I almost jokingly asked if they could possibly put a candle in the birthday girl’s dessert.
As it turned out, everything surpassed my expectations. Inside was bigger than I expected (as I had only seen pictures of the outside). The menu was surprisingly diverse and catered for a wide variety of tastes. In addition there was also an exciting specials menu. All three of us opted for the roast dinner (I had the pink beef, birthday girl had lamb and my other friend had “three meats” which was beef, lamb and pork).
Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection. The beef was pink, the roasties were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, the green vegetables (broccoli and mangetout) tasted like they were steam cooked, the gravy was heavenly and my friend, who had the pork, had crackling as well. Sides were horseradish for the beef, mint sauce for the lamb and pineapple salsa for the pork. The portions were substantial.
To finish, my friends had the individual Mixed Berry & Pimms Trifle and the Toblerone Whipped Cream Pavlova. I do not usually order dessert as I tend to find sweet menus repetitive and dull but I actually found it difficult to decide between a number of unique desserts that I haven’t seen before. I opted for the Chef’s Jaffa Cake Creme Brulée and it was absolutely delicious. My friend’s trifle came complete with birthday candle which was just lovely!
The birthday girl drank Pinot Grigio Rosato and I was incredibly impressed that there were a number of alcohol free options and not just the blandest bottles that are usually on offer. Two of us had the Brewdog Punk Alcohol Free (which I think is a superior AF beer) and it was heartening to see decent alcohol free wines on the menu as well.
We finished with coffee and mint chocolate.
The servers were very friendly and we felt like we were given lots of time. Despite how incredibly busy it was throughout, the wait staff were really attentive to us.
The ‘vibe’ of the whole pub was cool and laid back. The background music was just that, background music which was perfect and allowed for conversation.
As we left it was such lovely weather that we decided to have one more drink outside where we saw a rainbow as we looked out over the waterfront. A perfect Sunday and a perfect birthday meal.
I love the refreshment rooms. The food is slightly more expensive but worth every penny. If you want to impress somebody this is the place to go. The staff are tidy clean friendly and helpful. The food is delivered beautifully and is always to die for. The historic surroundings and atmosphere of the building are truly fascinating. I have been dressed for a special night or just in shorts and t-shirt and I always feel comfortable and treated well and with respect.
