In the two or so weeks since I ate at The Horseshoe I’ve sent three people to eat their mixed grill. It’s a recommendation that’s gone down well; one now skips the gym nearby to get his fix. I’m so proud. This verbal pyramid scheme is great in principal but not so good for my blog stats. I should probably share it with everyone, even if it means having to wait a little bit longer for my dinner.
The Horseshoe Bar and Restaurant in Hall Green, Birmingham is something of a culinary chimaera, made up of contrasting components just like the mythical creature. As manager Tanveer Handa explained to us, the goal is to provide high quality Indian cuisine alongside traditional gastropub fare.
Atmosphere
The venue’s interior reflects this dual ethos. Previously a traditional local pub, the Horseshoe has been transformed into a warm and inviting space, where wood and brown leather create the atmospher of a cosy yet upmarket gastropub. Sadly the Eastern decor is more sparse, but a few graceful statuettes indicate that Chilli & Spice, the restaurant’s Indian avatar, is also present.
food
Naturally, the menu offers a variety of options for the palate. However, don’t expect fusion dishes. The philosophy is very much to keep the Indian food separate from the other cuisine, as reflected by the two separate menus.
Despite its name, the ‘English menu’ in fact carries options as diverse as tiger prawns, crispy duck and various pasta dishes, alongside the normal pub grub choices like fish and chips and lamb shank. The amount of choice is perhaps a bit overwhelming, despite the valiant attempt to cover all bases.
The Chilli & Spice menu however, is intensely focused on fine Indian fare. Starters kasondhi ka jingha (jumbo prawns marinated and flavoured with honey and mustard) together with barrah kebab (lamb chops marinated in yoghurt, garlic and ginger) set the bar incredibly high for the rest of the meal.
Thankfully, murg methi (chicken cooked with fenugreek leaves in creamy gravy) lived up to expectations, providing a deliciously flavoursome experience without resorting to the overuse of pepper and spice many curries are guilty of.
For dessert (if you can manage to find room) we recommend gajar ka halwa. This is a classic Indian dessert combining grated carrots and milk reduction in a sweet partnership that tops off your meal perfectly.
drink
While the Horsehoe Bar and Restaurant wine menu is good, the cocktails made more of an impression. In particular, moreish house specials lychee martini and spiced mojito represent the restaurant’s most successful attempts at uniting East and West.
Been coming here for a few years and always an enjoyable atmosphere. Friendly staff and food ain't too bad either. Lovely staff for the banqueting suite who are willing to help whatever is needed.
The new Bar and Grill section is a good addition. The Horseshoe Special Sizzler has a good flavour and there's enough food to share between two people.
All I can say about this place is wow. Helpful staff, the refurb looks amazing. We had family from Australia and Fiji and they loved the food. They enjoyed the spices and how fresh it was and it's the best food they had tasted since arriving in the UK. Highly recommended to family and friends. It's a must try which you will enjoy thoroughly. 10/10 👌👌👌👌
The biggest mix grill I've ever attempted to eat.
The car park can be a bit tight but seems safe enough. I've eaten here twice over the last couple of weeks both on a Saturday. The staff are really helpful and friendly and the food spot on. Mix grills are worth ago...but share! There is so much food and good value. The only thing I think is quite steep is the poppadoms and chutney, they work out at £2.80 pp so can really top up the bill on a large table.
Will definitely return!
We had a table for 4 using Groupon deal where we paid £13 per head for 3 courses of the Italian menu This was pretty good value for money. My scallop starters should have been £8.50 and consisted of 2 scallops and some lobster sauce. The scallops were tasty, fresh and cooked well and the sauce was creamy and delicious. However, I would've been disappointed with the value for money on that if paying full price. Main course I went for the spaghetti carbonara. Very tasty and filling and a bargain £8.45 on the menu compared to the starter. Dessert for me was a ricotta cheesecake with forest fruit sauce. Again very creamy but not too rich. All in all the food was very good. The restaurant itself is very nicely done out but the men's toilets definitely need a bit of TLC.
Booked though Groupon. Two three courses for £22, fair to say didn't know what to expect, as other places I've visited using vouchers treat you differently. There was no need to worry, the service was excellent, and the food even better. Strongly recommended!!!
I had a Groupon experience for the cocktail masterclass and it was the best class I've ever done . My partner and my sister and her husband did it aswell and they loved it . My brother in law doesn't even like cocktails that much but he thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience , and has since mentioned that he wants to make cocktails at home because he has now got a taste for it. With the deal we had food and it tasted delicious. I haven't been to this pub in years as I moved from hall green to Rowley regis and I made a special trip to the pub as I saw this deal was on and I must say I am so glad I did make the extra journey to go to this pub . It's excellent in every way. The staff are friendly, the food is tasty and the decor is modern and up to date. A big thank you for making my experience a fantastic one and I look forward to coming back in the future.
I used a Groupon to celebrate Father's Day with my husband and parents. It was a lovely meal. Great value for money with the voucher. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially Nicky. Check out my YouTube videos and subscribe.
Ive been going to the horseshoe for some years now. It’s my local pub. Food is great and reasonably priced. I find the bar menu more appealing than the restaurant menu. Various curries, all of which look very nice and of course the mixed grill which I would highly recommend. Go for the small if eating it alone and a large is perfect for 2 people. Friendly staff & great atmosphere top off an overall fantastic pub.
Lovely food, friendly waiting staff very attentive. Large portions.
Very clean. My only gripe was the service charge, so sorry, no tip left. !!
Absolutely love Indian mixed grills, been eating them for years, but in days gone by I had to travel over to Hansworth or the Black country for one, I'm now very happy that they are more and more moving Birmingham way, the decor of the shoes is done to a high standard and so is the service, but if I'm honest, as good as the food is, it's not quiet ready to take on the king of Indian mixed grills, which is the Grove in Hansworth, all the same the Shoes will be a regular venue for me to drink and dine. Absolutely recommend a visit.
