Very long waiting time for food (45 mins after ordering) but Food is good, decent portions, friendly staff.
Recommendations in food: Really liked the idli sambar, rava dosa and chai. Not sure why my rava dosa had so many solid black pepper corns (~20), may want to request staff to be mindful of so,, not to ruin the flavour. Gobi Manchurian was so so.

Food was good, though it was not anything extra ordinary, but making it available to people looking for South Indian food is appreciated . I was there in Birmingham for about 4 hours. Managed to go to this restaurant, had my lunch and packed puliyodharai to a remote place in Italy for dinner. Not bad. Enjoyed it. Continue good service Thank you.

This is my second visit to this place, after completion of my darshan at Balaji temple Birmingham, i ordered dosa, chole, podi idly, panner butter masala with tandoori rotis and vegetable pulav, gulab jamun
Podi idly, Dosa, vegetable pulav were top notch, with great taste, panner butter masala and tandoori roti were disastrous, i wont suggest to go even poori with chole as chole curry have sweet flavour.
The atmosphere is clean and neat the space is too congestive and packed with dine in tables and chairs.

The food was good and tasty. We have ordered.
1 chicken 65 - 4/5
2 chilly chicken -3/5
3 hot chutney masala dosa -3/5
4 ghee roast -4/5
5 chicken biriyani 3/5.
I felt hot chutney masala dosa is just like podi dosa.
The price is very reasonable but I felt an absence in the service. We felt our table was left ignored. But once the good was ordered the service was quick.
Enjoy eating š
MEGHA GUPTA
Very very delicious meal with super quick service! Would definitely recommend this place for authentic food

Quite tidy and welcoming little gem very family friendly and for larger groups. The server seemed happy to help although there was a bit of a language barrier so half of the times we had to translate for her, not a big deal as she was absolutely lovely!
The food? Where do I start? Absolutely brilliant. Fresh, flavoured to perfection, crispy, sweet, spicy,.. I could go on for ages. Absolutely amazing Iām not usually lost of words but this time I definitely am.
The only down bit was the hour wait and the food didnāt come all at the same time unfortunately. They seemed to focus more on delivery than our food at one point.
Overall very enjoyable and delicious!

I recently had breakfast at Chennai Dosa and it was worth every penny. The breakfast was delicious, with authentic flavors that made it a memorable experience. The ambiance was pleasant, and the staff provided excellent customer care. I highly recommend Chennai Dosa for a satisfying breakfast.

I haven't been to a Chennai Dosa in years. The staff here were prompt and friendly. The food was amazing and authentic flavours from back home. They are probably the only Indian restaurant with kids friendly options. Definitely going back again.

This place is great! atmosphere is chill and cool. Top notch food. The staff was helpful, even though there will be room for improvent on service side.
Great place to hangout at an affordable price.
The restaurant accept CASH only. There is a cash point nearby but be prepared.
Restaurant timing also varied based on the day of the week.
Saturday and Sunday they open early at 10 am, other days only at 12pm.

Food is good, but only problem is that you gotta specifically go to Dudley to eat. Any other location near city centre would have been better.
Adhith Rajesh
The best place for South Indian tiffin in Birmingham, without a doubt. I have had a few visits and the food quality has been consistent. Interestingly, they serve the longest dosa in Europe, which is called the Chennai Dosa special. You should not miss it. Bit pricey but the food quality justifies it. Recommended!

Visited this place on one of my friendās birthday. We celebrated his birthday. Post that we were discussing where to go so one of our common friend told letās visit Chennai Dosa as food is good here. So we headed towards āTHEā Chennai Dosa. It looked good from outside when we reached there. We entered to the restaurant and looked for a place where we 5 friends can sit along. Got one fine place and we sat there. Restaurant was not much crowded as it was 9:30 PM on a Friday night. After waiting for 10 mins we got menu cards in our hands. We started browsing to fine the food which we all can eat.

We decided and waiting for someone to take our orders. Another 10 mins and we placed our order. Starters came by 10:05 PM and we started having it. The only good thing in that starter was Gobi chilli. Post that we tasted was paneer chilli and it was not good. Then podi idly with full of salt.

Then it comes for main course. As usual I had ordered Ghee roast Dosa which was completely dry. Somehow we finished our food and it was 10:40 PM. We called the staff for getting parcel for my friendās wife. He told that kitchen is closed and there is nothing which can be given as parcel.

We didnāt expect this as we thought that staff will come and intimate us that kitchen is getting closed, please let me know if there is anything which you want to order finally. But no, thatās didnāt happen. And we all were thinking what to get for friendās wife so that she can have as she stayed at home to take care of her kids. It was a horrible experience and I didnāt face this till date where you go to a restaurant and they didnāt ask us before their kitchen closed.

I would rate .5 but I donāt have that option š

Service was not at all good when it comes to make your customer happy. Even the staff was not presentable that you can call and ask him for anything. Not at all customer friendly. Worst experience on friendās birthday. Still figuring out why we decided to go to this place on his birthday. We would have gone to some other place. š

Better luck next time.

I have seen this place from being best to worst now. We used to be a regular visitor(almost every week) since it opens in Smethwick. We always enjoyed weekend buffets here but they recently changed their staff and now its a big mess. New staff cant handle anything. Most of the time buffet counters are empty, you need to keep asking them to bring more but it takes them too long to get anything.
we visited them again last Sunday and there were no Idli's. I asked before sitting down and I was told that they are preparing same. But Idli's never arrived, when I asked again they said its finished.. wow....
Also I had to remind him atleast 5 times to get sambhar and other stuff. by the time it arrived on our table we finished. Now we decided not to visit this place again.
Sooriyah Dhanapathi
Finally a place where we get typical South Indian food. The best dosa's in town. A good ambience and friendly service. Affordable price too.

Went to this place for dinner..the service was extremely poor, had to repeat several times for them to bring extra sambar by the time it arrived we had finished our meal. They had some button service on the tables which is useless as no one still attends. Even when we told them the service was bad they didn't even acknowledge there mistake. Very disappointed experience wouldn't be going to Chennai dosa anytime soon again. The buffet area was extremely messy food everywhere no common decency to keep it clean.. Overall review of my experience was the place was extremely dirty, poor service, below average food. Wouldn't recommend anyone to go here.

A very simple place with good South Indian cuisine. Extremely easy on the pocket, but great value for money. The dosa, idli and medu wada were all great. I don't recommend the kulfi though. The chutneys and sambhar served with all the dishes were incredible.

The place is very hygienic and well maintained. Service is prompt and courteous, with a very cool device on each table that summons the staff.

A very pleasant experience without compromising my budget.

First of all, the daal was NOT sambhar! Get your basics right. The hype surrounding this place is just not worth it.

The dosa was ok and so was the idli - but what are they without sambhar! The chicken 65 that we ordered was yuck! Avoid this place at all costs - lackadiscal service and poor standards of food - it was not worth the effort to come this far to have idlis and dosas!
Gyan Prrasad K
Excellent food...the Gobi65, the Medu Vada, and the Plain Rava Dosa...the chutney and sambar fantastic....all authentic Indian...just loved every bit of food....recommend this place anyone visiting Edgbaston or Birmingham..
The last time I ordered take away from here, (a couple of years ago), the food was pretty decent. This time, the food was just terrible. The chana tasted like chalk with tons of oil in it and the masala dosa was sub-standard. I will not be going back here.

In the 4 and a half odd years I lived in Birmingham, this was pretty much what came to mind when thinking of South Indian cuisine. Not so much because Chennai Dosa is good but because there simply aren't many options when it comes to South Indian food...

Me and my parents visited this a couple of times in 4 years not more than 5 or 6. The food simply dose not live up to the Coimbatore standards...The dosas aren't crispy enough, the Idlis not soft enough, the Sambar not fiery enough. Its just not good enough. For the love of god, do not order any meat dishes here!

Agreed, the prices are very pocket friendly but one would be happy to shell out a few more pounds to get a real taste of Tamil Nadu.Ā

The restaurant itself is simple and the staff are polite but not very sharp or enthusiastic. You would see them watching TV nonchalantly rather than keeping a watchful vigil on their customer's needs.

I feel dearly for the people who think this is what South Indian food tastes like. I would urge you to avoid this place all together.

I am absolutely flabbergasted at the positive reviews of others on here, especially it being given 4 and 4.5/5?Ā

Also, how could they possibly forget the combination of a typical Ooty style coffee with crispy dosa? I just question myself if its really Tamils running the restaurant...

For a discerning Indian palate this place is not a good idea at all.
Jebaz
Loved the dosas there..

You will feel the south indian touch, when you enter the place. And the taste will also reflect it. If you are a britisher, it will be the best place to taste something different.

The only drawback in the restaurant is it tastes forever to get the ordered food.

Ambience - 3.0

Food - 4.0

Hospitality - 3.0

Varieties - 3.0

Cleanliness - 3.0

Absolutely wonderful. A meal for two consisting of a shared starter, main dish, chapati and drinks came to Ā£13.30. Good, authentic South Indian food.

Good south Indian food, reasonable value, friendly service. Recommended for informal meals with friends and family.
Very good with kids, friendly and informal service.
Food will not disappoint so long as you keep to the usual fare and don't get too adventurous. Excellent value for money at about Ā£10/head excl drinks.

Was surprised by a couple of negative reviews online, we have had no such experience. Only disappointment is they don't do filter coffee on weekends...

A real taste of Indian Dosa's. The quality, the serving style, the staff, the food, all Indian & the prices are way reasonable. Each and every dosa here can remind you of India or at least give a taste of India to people from other countries. Don't miss the kulfi Ice cream its worth the money.

Chennai Dosa - Well I can never forget my experience here. Visited this place on 5th January, 2011 to celebrate 2 of my friend's birthdays. They love South Indian food and this was a perfect place to celebrate.

We were so happy and excited to know about this restaurant. We did not even mind to wait for an hour out in the freezing weather. Food was delicious.. at that moment it was like heaven for all of us. We had spent almost 3 hours only hogging.. one can imagine how much we have enjoyed then.

The place was pretty small, very minimal place to walk. But who cares when it comes to food. We relished and enjoyed each and every item that we had ordered, from idli's dosa's meals.. and many more things which I don't remember exactly now.

Overall, we had a great time there. I will surely revisit this place sometime and enjoy the old loving memories.

I have been visiting Chennai dosa-Birmingham for quiet a long time now (over 3 years) and have observed the transformation in their service standard over the period of time. Me and my clients/friends have had bad service experience many a times. Once over a business lunch my client said to the restaurant manager he was not very happy with the service and will complaint it to the head office upon which she said " Do as you please, anyways Chennai dosa-Birmingham is not a part of the restaurant chain, it is just a franchise" we all were shocked with her reply. Chennai Dosa - Birmingham has never been able to provide a good service (atleast for past 1 year) and today they have managed to beat all of their past records.

This review is based on my todays experience at Chennai dosa - Birmingham. Me and my friends decided to have breakfast this morning at CD and so we called them to check until what time they serve. Upon calling a staff-girl named Priya said that breakfast in on until 11:45AM and so we got there by 11:30. After reaching, we were been refused to order breakfast and said we are late (in a very arrogant tone). When I mentioned that I did make a phone call and I was been told that its on until 11:45, Staff said "I did say that to you but we have to shut down now coz the food is over" She was clearly lying as I could see her taking food away with her to the kitchen. When I asked for an explanation for her lie she said "Please talk to manager, she cannot do anything" Manager refused to take the responsibility (as usual) and came across very rude saying "I cannot do anything". I asked back to Priya, what is the purpose of being so rude as she made us come all the way to the restaurant (5 miles) and what is she going to do with this food anyways? She said, "We will have to throw the food but cannot serve" in a very loud and arrogant tone. For a moment I cannot believe what she just said. We couldnt even complain this to the manager as they both are equally rude. Not once, not twice but this has happened for over 5 times.
I find this extremely rude and cannot go back to that restaurant at least until the manager and one of its staff is changed.
I strongly recommend to not to visit restaurant if you are looking for a pleasant dining experience.

Excellent food all the dosas are superb and genuine. Have never tried the non-veg but you go there for dosa idli utthapama
right? Pity that upma is not available on weekdays but .....! And more of a pity that they have stopped delivering and even takeaways,,,,, but their food, delivery, and prices are unbeatable.

Thought the food is same as the chennai dosa's in london and manchester the ambience of this place is very good. I would say after the reading branch of chennai dosa this is most clean one.

You won't find just desi's coming here they crowd is a mix of polish and asian people which I think is a good sign. I have mostly had their non-veg which I just love!!! I wish they would have some decent desert with the buffet. Good service and food to match that.

Location: 2/5
Ambiance: 3/5
Service: 2/5
Food: 4/5
Value for Money : 4/5
Overall: 3.5/5

it was a time where its been more than 2 years, that we are in the land of queen, the english..... we have several day starved to proper south Indian food. At times some of my friends and me used to get the frozen idli and vada from the near by PAK Super Market. it is really sick...... finally the wait has ended.

The Famous South Indian Restaurant chain The Chennai Dosa has opened a new branch for the hardcore fans of South Indian food (Idli, dosa, pongal). Birmingham is a place where there is a dense population of Asians to that of europeans.

The restaurant is simple south Indian style setup, with all tables to dine in and had barely had some free space between the tables to walk in between. we have ordered Idli wada pongal and Poori. all of them were very well prepared and served in short time and also given sambar, and coconut chutney, and aloo kurma to go with poori. the sambar was typical south Indian like we say chennai style preparation. we loved it. finaly we ended up ordering a 70mm Family Dosa, which is almost the width of a 1.5 times the table.

weekend is a special attraction here at chennai Dosa and also a feast for people who are craving for proper south Indian Food.

Weekend special Menu:

Breakfast Buffet costs 4.99 Pounds (unlimited)
Lunch Buffet Veg costs 5.99 Pounds
Lunch Buffet Non-Veg costs 6.99 Pounds

My Rating :

Value for Money : 3/5

Ambience : 3/5

Service : 4/5

Taste : 4/5
