Bit out of the way but worth the effort to get there. Everything a country pub should be. Cosy, welcoming full of atmosphere and friendly with top rate service and dog friendly. Food was reasonable value and very enjoyable. To be honest although marginally more expensive than most food pubs the quality of our meals were worth it and better than most pubs. Went in January and it was busy and very cosy. If there was any criticism it was that it was very dark in the room we had our meal. Had to use the phone torch to read the menus. Being an old building I'm not sure there were any electric lights in the room but a little more illumination might add to the atmosphere. It in no way spoilt our evening, I have to say, which was as close to perfect as you could hope for.

Eleven us were stopping about two miles away for a lads' weekend and the Blacksmiths provided an excellent retreat for beer and food. They catered for all of us-having preordered-and we were roundly impressed byvtge food. Meals included cod loin, lamb Henry, pork belly and sirloin steak. Desserts were good too and the wine drunk was better than it often is in pubs. A special word for the staff who worked tirelessly to accommodate us and keep us fed and watered throughout with a friendly efficiency and politeness. A really good pub. Thank you.

Exceptional food served in a truly authentic country pub. Lunch time menu is great value for money. Definitely one of the best restaurant / pubs in the Lake District.

We had a lovely evening meal last Wednesday night, Soup for my husband crayfish for me and 2 wonderful Lamb rumps for mains, which were cooked to perfection, well done chef. This is a little gem of a place, a touch hard to find in the dark, but really worth the effort. Traditional food with a modern twist a the great setting of an true old world country pub open fires small rooms no fuss furniture keep it up

Staying in the Duddon Valley for a few nights, The Blacksmiths came highly recommended. We were not disappointed. A tad isolated in Broughton Mills (about 2km from Broughton-in-Furness) this rustic - some might say rough around the edges - establishment offered a fantastic menu of local produce and selection of nice beers. The out-of-the-way location and the likely need for a driver makes frenzied appreciation of the latter difficult but you should be fine on a half or two. Lamb 'Henry', a slow-cooked shoulder joint of local Herdwick lamb, is the signature dish. Plentiful and falling-off-the-bone tender this lived up to its billing and is a challenge to the heartiest of appetites. Chef is not offended by requests for doggy bags. We also had steak which was beautifully cooked. For starters we had the pigeon and the smoked salmon respectively and the former although not a huge portion was beautifully cooked and presented. We were done in after two courses and declined dessert. The staff and local patrons were very welcoming and friendly which made for good chat over dinner. Not excellent but very, very good.

This is the 3rd time my wife and I have been here for an evening meal and each time we aren't disappointed. Be sure to book particularly at weekends! The food is excellent, drink selection is good (wine, gin and ale), and the staff friendly and helpful. This time my wife and I had duck and prawns off the specials menu plus belly pork for main course. All the food was cooked to perfection. I eat a lot so ordered a side of chips. Yet again we really enjoyed our evening and we will be back.

Amazing place! The owner makes you feel special and the staff is lovely ! The building itself to start with is something of its own, a bit like a time machine.... And the food.... well you will have to book a table as they seems to be full every day, but a must go to... don’t leave Lake District without visiting that pub

Having arrived on holiday the previous day, I was determined to find a pub with freshly made food on offer. The pubs local to our cottage had mixed reviews so I widened our search and came across this delightful pub with great reviews- we weren’t disappointed! The staff were extremely helpful, polite and welcoming. My husband and I both chose the lamb Henry, which was absolutely delicious. The children both had fish and chips, which went down equally as well. If we’re back in the area, we’ll definitely return and we made sure to recommend you in the cottage guest book!

Last minute thought on way home to eat out so we called and they gave us an immediate booking. Lamb and fish both beautifully cooked and presented. Even had room for a nice dessert.

This place is a hidden gem and I've now taken a few different friends and family for first time and they all love it. First visit in a while last week and the Lamb Henry was outstanding as always with lovely potatoes and roasted veg. Worth the drive you won't be disappointed.

We visited the Blacksmith Arms based on the previous reviews and we were not disappointed. It is a great experience a real old English pub in the true sense, with a great atmosphere and real log fires. Service was very good and the staff very welcoming, however, the food was outstanding. We were a party of four and we had the mushroom starter, the pigeon and the beetroot cured salmon. They were all excellent. Our mains were duck confit and the lamb Henry which were all first class. We didn’t have desert because we were full with the starter and the mains . We would really recommend this restaurant and the food it is well worth a visit.

We visited the Blacksmiths Arms for the first time to eat, we sampled their beers a couple of days ago! The food was delicious, a lovely cosy Cumbrian pub, with true family run hospitality. The welcome was lovely, a cosy dining area, and a good selection on the menu, which proved to be above expectation. We will be sure to return when we visit the area again

I refuse to tell you where you can walk into a beautiful old pub and at once feel as if you have been a regular there since, well forever! I also cannot let you know where you can always rely on the food being fresh, delishous and definitely not boring pub food. I love it here and try to find my way back (it's a real 'hidden' gem) whenever I can (Google maps assisted 😀). It does not cost the earth and I defy you to leave without a big satisfied grin on your face - that's if you can find it 😊 enjoy x

I didn't know what to expect in a pub seemingly in the middle of nowhere and was delighted with the menu, which was an assortment of traditional pub fare, local meats, and lovely puddings (desserts). It's a busy place so call for a reservation. Service may be a tad slow due to the busyness, however it's a great opportunity to soak in the ambiance of this old building. I left wanting to go back for a second and possibly third meal however only went on my last evening so couldn't :(

We have been lucky enough to eat here twice this week (courtesy of some gift vouchers). Both lunches were fantastic. Beautifully cooked food, very reasonably priced and very friendly service. I’d highly recommend this pub!

We came here, as a party of four, on a recommendation, looking for good food and well kept cask beer, we were not disappointed. The cask beer choice is not large with three on the bar but the ales are local and well kept. The food menu has plenty of choice but the vegetarian in our party struggled to find something acceptable. My recommendation would be the Lamb Henry, one of our party had rump of lamb and found it to be quite a small portion. Food and drink prices are very reasonable. One word of warning, keep a close eye on what you have ordered when setting the bill. We had a tab for food and drink which was kept at the bar, hand written and not itemised. I do not know if it was a genuine mistake or a ‘try on’ with tourists who would probably not be in the area again but we were overcharged by over £50 before I questioned the amount.
