The story and the stones are fascinating. Parking is plentiful and we came in on a backroad to avoid the crowds. Unfortunately, a cruise ship had landed in Stornoway that morning and the area was swarming with people. The day happen to be sunny and we enjoyed our time overall. Definitely worth a visit.
Great place to just chill and relax thinking about it's past..
The visitor centre is very good too with ample parking at the site. If your near, give it a visit, you will not be disappointed.
Beautiful place! Great view. Amazing historical circle of stones. I couldnt believe it will be so big.
We arrived at 7 am an we were the first there.
This place is one of the Highlights of the Outer Hebrides. The visitor centre is really tastefully designed, tasty dishes at the Cafe with super friendly staff. The film about the stones is worth seeing and provides interesting information. Visiting the ring of stones lifts up the mind, wonderful that unlike stonehenge it is possible to have direct access. We stayed far longer than intended.
I really wish to go back in time and see what exactly the purpose of these rocks is, and I am glad you can go next to them rather than cording off like stonehenge. It's quite a small car park but if you don't find any at the location you can park near a hotel and walk from the hotel hillside.
Loved the stones, they felt very spiritual and ethereal in a way especially thinking about the long history and all those who lived before us building and enjoying these stones. The stones themselves are free to go and see, there is a paid option (only £4 pp for adults) to go into a historical information type room if you are keen on learning more about the history and stories behind the stones. The only weird thing for us was that the stones were not located in some rugged remote area. Behind the stones are houses and back yards with washing and normal people things! It was kind of a shock that there was a residential area right amongst the stones, it wasn't quite what we expected! But they were still an awesome thing to come and see nonetheless. Staff at the Cafe and visitor centre were lovely and the toilets were free and clean facilities as well.
Wow how amazing is this! Slightly busy but we get that because it's such an important heritage sight that why would it not be. Such a wonderfully calm, tranquil place, its so amazing.
Well worth a visit and a place I'd be happy to go again.
The wind is blowing at 25mph, there's rain in the air, with showers threatening. You can still see the distant mountains despite it being overcast, the contrasting colours of the hills, greens, browns, greys, and purples of heather. The lochens look dark and foreboding until a shaft of sunlight breaks through and they turn silver-blue. It's a magical wilderness. It's any wonder our ancesters chose this place to set up the stones. I can only begin to imagine their motivation, devotion and purpose in those times.
Modernly trying to take a great shot of them as other visitors move among the stones is nearly impossible until momentarily the ancestors intervene and everyone is hidden by a stone. Click!
A very interesting spot. We opted to just visit the stones, which is free. There is a visitor centre with a gift shop, cafe and an exhibit which you can buy tickets for.
Whatever was the main reason to erect this standing stones in a such a remote place it is a wonderful feeling to know humans create all this 5000 years ago. Very easy to find with google maps, easy to drive to this place and park, free parking, free entrance and great views. Definitely worth a visit.
