Review The Bridge Inn - Calver

Stopped in for drinks after a walk up to Calver Weir with the dogs. Lovely dog friendly pub with friendly and helpful staff. Pint of Estrella and a pint of Level Head IPA was £10.20, reasonable price for a such a lovely area with lots of walks. Will be back to try the food one day.

Excellent in a word. We've walked around Calver many times going to the Weir but never actually popped in this pub. I'm glad we did, the food was excellent, the Sunday roast was very nice. Friendly staff and plenty of space indoors and outside depending what you'd like. We'll definitely go back 👍

After a long walk around Mam Tor, we called in this pub on the way back. Very nice venue, which I would certainly return to. The staff were friendly, professional and polite. Chilled relaxed atmosphere and the seating area outside is perfect! We ate outside because the tables aren't too close and I didn't feel crowded like a 'normal' beer garden. I was so hungry I didn't even take a photo of the food but believe me, it was LUSH!!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Excellent food- really tasty home made fish cakes and chicken flat bread dishes, obviously made by a chef that really cares about their food and flavours. Pleasant beer garden and play area. Good value.

An excellent bar. Varied tapas menu expertly cooked and served as & when ready to enable you to eat the previous courses. Varied drinks menu including gins, prosecco, larger etc. Reasonably priced food in a lovely location. The staff are excellent too. All young, polite & well trained in customer service. A credit to the bar & their parents. A special mention to Emily who knew her stuff, was efficient & entertaining. Thank you all. We will return

Spent a couple of hours at The Bridge Inn tonight and it was brilliant. The food was excellent, the service was efficient and friendly, and there were just so many areas to choose to sit! I chose the area by the kitchen and was mesmerised by the quiet and orderly efficiency as the two chefs worked like a well-oiled machine turning out plate after plate of delicious-looking food. Well done The Bridge Inn, you so deserve top marks. Thank you.

Quiet family meal, peaceful, certainly not currently too busy. Had trouble getting accurate info on openings / bookings, best response came via messenger as phone line was not connecting other than voicemail. Organisation and food was good, with lovely attention from staff team. Unfortunately no tapas currently on offer which is a shame but perhaps understandable in the context of sharing dishes. Wishing you the best for a busy and active summer 👍

Only giving 4 stars for food as felt the menu was a bit weird with too many spiced dishes but I opted for the haddock coujon sandwich which was actually fish in a roll , however the meal was lovely and hot and plenty of nicely cooked fish - service was excellent and facilities very clean

My partner and I (and our Cocker Spaniel) visited the Bridge Inn on Wednesday evening. We were made to feel very welcome by the friendly staff and really enjoyed the food. I had Tandoori Chicken Flatbread and Elaine had the Lamb Fritter (this name doesn't really do the dish justice). Both meals were fantastic and we will certainly be visiting again when we return to the area in July. Also worth checking out the beer garden, next to the river and gets the sun late into the evening - perfect.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The pub has changed from its normal tapas menu to pub classics due to c19. The house merlot was lovely. The other half had the special chicken burger which was really nice. I had the pie chips and peas were great the pie was ok but it did feel like a chip shop pie. Great service and great prices really a main is about £10. All in all we would definitely return.

Lovely atmosphere and decor, polite staff and gorgeous food. On the more expensive side, but the quality made the price worth it. Will be returning when I'm next in the area.

I wouldn't dine anywhere that promotes horrendous animal cruelty. This is foie gras that The Bridge Inn supports and has on its menu. In fact, foie gras is so cruelty, it's been banned in the UK! Is your gut really worth this horrendous cruelty! Although this is about a supplier to Gordon Ramsay, this is the same sort of suffering inflicted on these poor animals for fatty livers :( Crammed into tiny cages, caked in filth, riddled with sores and in agony from broken beaks and wings, these are the ducks used to make foie gras at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants. Campaigners last night branded the horrific conditions the “worst ever seen” after being shown the pictures of shocking cruelty at plants that supply the celebrity chef with the posh dish. Ducks lie dead and dying, many have painful eye injuries and abscesses and all are force-fed grain through a tube to make their livers 10 times the normal size during a two-week ordeal in a windowless shed before they are slaughtered. In one pitiful scene, an exhausted and clearly distressed bird can be seen on its side with its tongue hanging from its beak. A vet who saw the disturbing footage, obtained by the Mirror, said if pets were kept in such appalling conditions their owners would be hauled before a court. Justin Kerswell, campaigns manager for animal rights group Viva!, said: “This is torture, pure and simple. “I can’t imagine Gordon Ramsay would dare defend this. We have seen many images of animal suffering in our 20-year history, but this footage from a supplier to Gordon Ramsay has to rank as among the worst and the most heart-breaking. “Ducks caged and filthy in their own vomit and clearly in distress, all to produce a dollop of fat as a choice on expensive menus that no one needs. “How long can he say that taste trumps ethics when faced with this?” Ramsay last night stopped all purchasing from the French firm Ernest Soulard that supplies his foie gras. A spokesman said: “We have only just been made aware of these allegations but as a precaution have suspended purchasing from this supplier while we investigate further.” Viva! launched an investigation into conditions with French campaign group L214 after being passed the footage. The films were from five Soulard farms in France’s Vendee region. We asked respected vet Amir Kashiv to examine the footage, which he branded “appalling”. He said: “The system depicted in this is shocking. “If any keeper of dogs or cats, or pet birds, were found to keep their animals in such conditions and with similar intentions they would surely find themselves in a courtroom. “These are waterfowl yet they have no access to water. They have no access to anything at all. "Mostly, the ducks are either extremely confined or at best in a crowded group in larger pens where weaker birds can be seen trampled upon by others in the group. “Ducks have obvious eye lesions. Many can be seen panting heavily. "This can be due to serious respiratory disease and high environmental temperature in the unit. Several ducks are extremely ill and appear to be dying. “One is seen facing backwards in the pen, its left wing is caught in between the bars and a bloody lesion is visible. “The bird is seen making several unsuccessful attempts to free the wing. It is clearly distressed. Several dead birds are seen on the floor. “Workers can be seen feeding the birds. The whole procedure takes seconds. "Due to the abruptness and speed there is a danger of damaging the mouth or oesophagus in the process. The purpose is to produce a huge, fatty, unhealthy liver. "Specifically - to damage the birds’ health.” The process of obtaining foie gras is so cruel its production has been banned in Britain. But imports from France and other countries is not controlled. Soulard’s logo is a happy picture of a duck wearing a bow tie and free range living. Although the birds do have a period of outside, they then spend a miserable fortnight cooped up in the tiny pens as they are prepared for death. Foie gras appears on the A La Carte Menu at the flagship Gordon Ramsay restaurant in London. It is on sale at his Maze restaurant and Michelin starred Savoy Grill. It is believed his restaurants buy it using an intermediary and he was unaware of any cruelty. Gordon Ramsay restaurants had boasted Soulard was an “industry leader in terms of animal welfare”. Former farming minister David Heath urged diners to boycott foie gras over its cruel farming methods. The Somerton and Frome MP added: “I am far from convinced there is a humane way of producing it.” A Soulard spokesman said the chief executive would contact the Mirror, but no call was received. Delicacy created by misery Every year 38 million ducks and geese are killed in France to make foie gras, a delicacy there. At slaughter they are hung upside down, have their throats slit and are left to bleed to death. About a million birds die in the force-feeding process. Only males are used. Females, which do not put on weight so fast, are typically destroyed at a day old by being dropped into electric mincers. France is by far the world’s largest producer and consumer of foie gras, which by law can only have that definition if force-feeding is used. But small producers in other countries – amid growing fury over the cruel methods – let birds eat freely before killing them when their livers are naturally bigger.

Never been there but as a chef I know how important the business is for the owners and the people that work there . Due to the fake 1* reviews from the vegans/vegetarians I have decided to rate with 5* the Bridge inn as I find unfair the way that those people trying to show their preferences.

Awesome place amazing staff and gutsy owners the chefs obviously care a great deal about producing hi quality products like fois gras and delivering it so the customer enjoys a great dining experience kudos to the bridge inn don't change stay strong don't let these food nazis win

We stand behind you, do not let any vegan cult throw your bussiness. You guys are awesome. Say yes to foie gras, If you don't like it, don't eat there, but don't try to ruin a business because it doesn't fit your narrow minded and sectic agenda.
Oliver Tuson
What a great pub. The food was amazing. The foie gras and deserts were to die for, it's nice to try new and different things . Will defiantly be coming again. Thanks for a brilliant night.

This is so hysterically funny!! It's like the owners & their friends leaving reviews are deliberately advertising their business as somewhere only violent knuckle draggers would be happy. Rock on keepin the truth out there vegan dudes, lovely to watch how you pass them the rope lol Xx

Most excellent menu.!! Keep going !!! If your going to eat here , please use your head. If you don't like something that is on the menu, then don't order or eat it.

5* I think the low ratings given to this place in the name of Vegan are a completely disgusting use of facebooks rating system. Jobs and lives are created from businesses like these. Either way, smashing place

Never eaten at this place, but I shall be making a trip there now for some lovely foie gras. Please don't give in to arrogant vegans who think nobody should be allowed to eat meat. Stick to your guns and cook the food you want!
Mark Newton
It's all about freedom of choice. If you don't like the ethics or menu go elsewhere. But no one should be threatened or held to ransom by a mob. Well done to the owners for sticking to their beliefs
Tory Martin
Would not recommend. Bad customer service and not good food. Maybe a change of menu would help.

Animal cruelty is NEVER acceptable . Geese & Ducks are beautiful birds and should never be treated so badly. Please remove Foie gras from the menu . What scares you so much about people showing their kindness and compassion. 75% of the voting says they disagree with you . The public , have spoken .
Jolyon Bryce
I'd really like to visit here- your stand against bullies is impressive. Love a landlord team with a back bone!! Do you also do accommodation? Maybe a package deal including a stay and foie gras might be in order?! Keep up the good work guys, I know how vital rural pubs are to the community.
