First visit. Fantastic food, great ambiance and good fun. A very relaxed atmosphere, unintrusive but efficient staff. A small menu with some different choices. Could not fault this restaurant in any way. Will be back.

Milkwood has a small, but wonderful menu. This is my second visit, and as before the worst thing about the restaurant is the struggle to decide what to eat. There were so many things I would have loved to eat that I was really struggling to decide. In the end I opted for the Faggotts and pease pudding to start and the Ox Cheeks for mains. I was delighted with the choices. We enjoyed the Pumpkin and fennel seed bread which we were served on our arrival, it was well cooked and had distinctive flavours. Given the challenge of choosing from such delights we decided to have a Focaccia as well, while making our choice. This was a delight of garlic flavour in a soft and tasty bread. My partner had the citrus and juniper seared Salmon and dill cucumber for his starter. The salmon was well flavoured with lemony tastes. The dill cucumber was rich and mustardy, its crunch working well with the texture of the salmon. I went with the Faggott and pease pudding, the faggott was rich and juicy and the soft tang of the peas in the pease pudding created a perfect foil for the richness of the faggott. I'd forgotten how tasty faggotts could be, and this one is the best example I've had in many years. For mains my partner has the Brecon Pork Chop with cannellini and pea ragu, this was a large chop cooked perfectly. Pork, if overcooked, can become tough, but this chop was well cooked and still full of juice. The ragu was surprisingly refreshing and was a perfect complement to the Pork. I opted for the Ox Cheek with mash, purple sprouting broccoli and bacon crumb - I was really glad I did. The cheek had been slow cooked and was tender, but richly flavoured. There was a good quantity of broccoli, a veg I love, which offered a crispness that worked well with the softness of the meat and mash. The bacon crumb on top of the cheek was another delicious texture which provided a saltiness to the dish which was most welcome. Delicious. My partner has the sticky Orange Polenta Cake and bay ice cream for dessert. The cake was sweet, but not overly sweet and the orange cake was distinctive but sutle. A perfect end to a meal. I chose the cheese, each of the three cheeses: Montgomery cheddar, Tunworth and Hereford blue were strong, tangy and excellent. A wonderful meal in a small but friendly location - well worth a visit.

We thought we would try Milkwood after seeing the great reviews. We were not disappointed. Starters were exceptional. Cod with Thai sauce and mussels with crispy noodles. Full of flavour and the cod cooked to perfection. My wife had mozzarella and chicory salad with orange segments. The balance of the bitterness of the leaves and sweetness of the orange, brought together with a creamy dressing was lovely. Mains included locally sourced pork chop, on the bone with a haricot bean and pea ragout and a burnt apple sauce. (Photo) Every element of the dish was very well cooked, very moist, seasoned well and packed with flavour. The meat was also removed from the bone and sliced. A nice touch. My wife has a baked homemade, pasta rolls with ricotta, butternut squash and sweet chestnut filling with a crispy breadcrumb topping, on a bead of spinach. Great flavours in a vegetarian dish. Portion size was very good, so much so, after a starter and a main we had to call it a day. What a superb restaurant and for our tastes, one of the best in Cardiff. We will be taking the rest of the family there soon. Very highly recommended. It is worth noting that the menu does change on a regular basis, so always new dishes to try each time.

A friend and I dined here one evening and had a long catch up over an excellent meal. We didn’t realise how long we’d been at the table (3.5 hours!) until we went to leave and saw the time but no time did we feel hurried by the staff or that we were waiting too long for courses to arrive. The food on their regularly changing menu is high quality and varies between simple fine well and some with intricate touches executed expertly. My friend and I both particularly enjoyed the Sewin with leeks, laverbread, and cockles with the fish done to perfection with a crispy skin and white flesh falling apart easily and tastily. I also found the three cheeses for desert well chosen and well served, accompanied by a wonderful walnut purée.

Service was informal and understated, food was brilliant and really deserved to be priced higher. Fantastic wine too.

I visited with family for my birthday meal. The food was lovely and very well presented. Just enough choice in the menu. Waiting staff were very friendly and attentive. A small restaurant that I will definitely return to.

Was apprehensive before going as only one vegetarian option for starters & another for mains. Service attentive, lovely complementary warm bread & butter, veggie option looked promising but lacked taste and was bland. Deferred dessert as £8 each.

It’s been over a year since our last trip to Milkwood and I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the amazing first experience we had there - BUT it surpassed it! Firstly we were served some bread, followed by the most amazing confit potatoes, topped with cheese and truffle oil. I’ve never had potatoes that taste like that! Such a delicious mouthful. For starters I had pork and pancetta tortellini and my other half had celeriac schnitzel. Both were delicious and amazing. For main I had duck and my partner had hanger steak. Again - both super delicious, beautifully plated and gorgeous. We also ordered a side of baby gem lettuce with a green dressing. I’ve never had such a delicious lettuce! Desserts were custard and apple Mille feuille and treacle tart - with the most amazing ice cream! The service was more chilled out than before, which we preferred. The ladies at Milkwood were the perfect level of attentive, without being overbearing. Happy to say Milkwood is still my favourite restaurant! And I recommend it to everyone!

Another delicious lunch for ten #bookclub members, this time upstairs in a new function room. As always there was great attention to detail, not least in the selection and preparation of the food. The menu is quite short, always a good sign- an indication that everything is freshly cooked. The dishes are imaginative, delicious and use the best of local produce. The wine list is also short, but extremely well chosen. Service is informal, efficient and friendly. The best.

I have been meaning to visit this restaurant for a while as I had read really good reviews. Well I was very disappointed. Lacklustre service and poor food. The starter of crab bisque with red mullet was okay but the bisque itself was far too salty. My pork chop was fatty with no crispy skin, the polenta was greasy and almost inedible and the amount of garlic used was so overpowering as to render the whole dish almost inedible. I passed on dessert. I hope this was a one off but I won’t be hurrying back.

Milkwood in Pontcanna Street is well worth a visit. It is quite small so booking is probably advisable particularly at the weekend. The decor and furniture are quite plain and basic but the food is delicious. We were given beetroot amuse-bouche which I didn’t eat as I don’t like beetroot. I had the tortellini to start, steak bavette as the main and treacle tart for dessert. Each course was beautifully presented and every mouthful was a treat. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal. There is a good selection of wines, although no red Rioja. The staff were friendly and attentive and the spacing of the courses was just right. I like the fact that they offer food made with local produce where possible. However, there isn’t a huge choice for vegetarians. I will certainly be eating at Milkwood again soon. Thank you Milkwood staff for a very enjoyable evening.

Small local place with a seasonal menu. I'd highly recommend the set lunch (only available mid-week). Food are thoughtfully prepared with attentive staff. Our cod was too salty. We couldn't eat it. Management was very decent and receptive of feedback and charged us only one set lunch instead of two. Will definitely return.

I had an evening meeting one Thursday so I decided to treat myself and a friend to lunch at Milkwood. There was a good choice on the menu - two courses for a set price. We had a starter and main and a glass of wine - it was as if you were at the home of the best cook of all your friends. Everything was delicious and no rushing to move on. So coffee and more chat after the meal.

Ok, so I’ll go through the food first. For starters we had the Tortellini and Fish in a Crab bisque. Both of these were delicious. The pasta was light and fresh. The fish was nice as it also came with toast with a fish paste. But the bisque was amazing and I wish there was more. For mains we had the pork and trout. The Pork came with a lot of meat but also a lot of fat, so if you don’t like fat then you might leave a lot of meat. I think they could have cooked the fat a lot more to be a little bit crispy and more edible for the people who aren’t a fan of fat. The mash that came with the pork was the best and the side of beans were nice and garlicky. The trout came with laverbread, samphire and cockles. This was a lovely dish but slightly on the smaller side compared to the pork. Overall the service was great and hats off the the lady who served us she was fun. The restaurant is well placed in Pontcanna for a few drinks beforehand or afterwards in the surrounding pubs.

I went with a friend for lunch. We had the two course set menu - with a glass of wine each. Really really good. Portions just right. Friendly staff and all together I really recommend Milkwood.
