Review Rogan & Co - Cartmel

Adam Howden
Visited Rogan & Co this week as part of Birthday celebrations for my partner, The food was beautifully presented with incredible flavours, which both myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed, we also opted for the wine pairing, and this did not disappoint either, with some very well picked wines! Service was absolutely spot on, all the staff give you plenty of info around the food and the wines, and all done in a way, where you feel you are being given just the right amount of attention, whilst being able to enjoy your visit to the full, A great team all round. Well recommended to dine here if you are planning on a visit to the area.

What a fantastic dining experience we had! Each course is beautifully presented - I hardly wanted to mess it up with a bite but of course that’s impossible because the aromas and colors. The addition of flowers as not just garnish but as an edible part of the dish was so fun - never eaten a chrysanthemum before. Highly recommend the wine pairing. The service was just as great and not overly fussy which I liked. It’s the little touches that make this place different and it didn’t disappoint.

I was really looking forward to eating here, we had the wine pairing which was lovely. It was amazing, the little snacks were popping with flavour , food beautifully presented and top notch service. My only criticism was my hogget was over salty, other than that highly recommended. Lovely atmosphere and ambience

A great experience. Food was excellent with a special mention for the skate main course. The outstanding thing for me was the service. All the staff were young people who were polite, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommended if you get the chance.

To be honest, I'm amazed by this place! It has a top-notch menu for a very reasonable price. I've never seen anything like it before. The food was fantastic and very well balanced, the service was great and the atmosphere really friendly and not snobbish at all. I especially appreciated that they were aware of my food intolerance and changed the dishes accordingly.

Had a fabulous time both staying at the hotel and eating at the restaurant. Excellent food served by attentive and courteous staff. Great explanations of paired wines. Lovely atmosphere. Breakfast equally very good. Well worth a visit.

Excellent place, we went to L'enclume one night and Rogan & co the next. Its a different experience, much more relaxed and cosy, very much like a good country pub but its clean, tidy and almost minimalist while still being cosy and warm. The food however is most definitely not country pub, its top of the line food, its as good as the food from L'enclume but instead of 17 dishes on a tasting menu this is starter, main and pudding. with an optional snacks as a starter. Once again its mouthwateringly good food, served in a relaxed setting. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere it is excellent and worth a visit.

We ate here for my sister's wedding meal yesterday and I just had to jump on here and say thankyou for making it such an enjoyable event. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable. The staff were so attentive and they just couldn't do enough for us. The menu was lovely and varied, and they catered for anybody who had special requirements without hesitation. The food came out speedily despite us all ordering on the day. Special thanks especially to the gentleman that greeted us at the door and talked through the menu with us. It was an experience thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks Rogan & Co!

Perfect restaurant experience, friendly and knowledgable staff, warm and relaxed environment and some of the best food I've eaten. Fine dining food without the 'faff'. Offering just the 3 or 4 courses is perfect too as it means that we'll definitely be going back to enjoy the high quality food without a full size tasting menu. Loved Rogan and Co!!!

Delicious family Sunday roast. Excellent gluten and dairy free options, and lovely relaxed atmosphere.

I've not been to Rogan & co before, Simon Rogan's other restaurant in Cartmel. I get the impression that previously it was just simple bistro food, looking at old reviews anyway. That has now changed with the recent appointment of Head Chef Kevin Tickle and a refurbishment. Apparently, Mr Tickle has been an important part of the L'Enclume kitchen for the last few years, and now with the expansion of the Rogan 'empire' to Claridges , he's been given full control of Rogan & co. So we were very excited to visit on Friday, we were going to Cartmel just to eat there. Mrs Bacon had taken the day off especially. That gives you an idea of how seriously we take our food! It was a beautiful day too, the drive up from Manchester is all part of the anticipation of eating some seriously top class cuisine. After a brief wander with the dog, down by the stream that flows next to the little restaurant, we went in early to make sure we had secured our favoured seat by the window.

The main course was Cumbrian rose veal with rainbow chard, potato cake and sage. The veal was cooked sous-vide and then browned prior to serving. This was a very nice piece of meat that gained a bit of richness from the strong jus. The rainbow chard provided a nice fresh contrast to the veal. Highlight of the dish for me was the delicate potato and sage cakes that totally transcended their modest description. Fantastic flavour enhanced by inclusion of goat’s cheese in the cakes.

The restaurant after undergoing a full internal refurb , it`s warm and very welcoming. The log fire roars and the mood is lovely in there. `Billy no mates` was just sat there alone on a table for one but i`ll definitely be back for a romantic stay once i find myself a Princess out there in the big wide world. I had a wee laugh to myself at the large stainless steel poles in the restaurant. I can guarantee they`ll be put to good use at the staff parties no doubt.

The menu sounded very appealing but an appetiser of “crispy pigs ears” was nothing of the sort and one of the worst things I’ve had the misfortune of eating. And I like pigs’ ears...

Rogan & Co is a good restaurant to go if you want to stay in Cartmel for another night after L’enclume  or if you can’t get a reservation there. Food is very similar but instead of 21 courses, you get the standard 3 course a la carte. Some dishes did overlap between the two restaurants, for example, bread was the same, Reg’s duck, which we had the previous night at L’enclume was nearly the same. We ordered some new dishes, the slow cooked duck egg was particular good, served with an intensely sweet butternut squash. Like L’enclume, desserts weren’t as impressive as other courses, perhaps an area to improve but Rogan & Co is a very solid restaurant and easy to book. Nibble - pea cream, fish skin Nibble - Ragstone goats cheese Slow cooked duck egg, grilled squash, toasted seeds Corned beef, pickled onion, radish mustard emulsion Rag’s duck, Sandgate potatoes, baby turnips, mustard Venison, beetroot, bulgar,

The next dish of Confit potatoes, lovage emulsion & caper was straight out of the Rogan repertoire. The confit potatoes were silky smooth, contrasted perfectly by the crisp potato skin using a technique seen at its two Michelin starred sister restaurant on artichoke skins.

The lake district boasts three restaurants that hold Michelin stars and a huge number of pubs, all serving the usual pub grub. There is something of a gap however in the middle ground. This is where Rogan & Company fits in, offering good food in an informal atmosphere at good prices. Rogan & Co is situated in the village of Cartmel, is 30 seconds walk from the main square and is Simon Rogan's ( L'enclume ) second restaurant in the village. Even before setting foot in the place, there's two things you're pretty sure of: first, ingredients used at Rogan & Co will be of the highest quality and for the most part locally sourced, and second, the cooking will be precise. Despite having a third restaurant ( Roganic ) in London, Simon's home is Cumbria allowing him to fully participate in the food at Rogan & Co. In other words, this is not just a name over the door or a consultancy agreement, this is properly a Simon Rogan restaurant. It actually goes a step further than this we learnt while d
