Review The Pig And Whistle - Cartmel

Quaint pub in gorgeous Cartmel. Proper cosy, country pub feel. Bar staff were lovely and welcoming, and so were the locals! Only had a drink here but the food sounded pretty good and did look it too! Will have to go back and try it. Definitely worth popping in for!

Visited on pie Wednesday. Good selection. Had beef/guiness, crammed with meat, very tasty, choice of potatoes, selection of mixed veg, followed by Tim's sticky toffee pudding..... yummy 😋 😋 😋 very attentive staff, one very lovely chatty girl who's at Manchester uni.

Loved this place, walked over from Grange which took us about an hour and the sun had decided to come out which was welcomed. A real local rural pub in a lovely setting on the outskirts of the village, very well staffed and very welcoming with a good atmosphere. Well stocked local ales which I had the Cumbria Way and It went down a treat, food 🍲 is on offer and we tried from the nibbles board on the bar chilli 🌶 beef 🥩 nachos which was a meal in its self and was delicious 😋. A hostlery that is not to be missed.

Great bar, great views, missing out on food, should have the beef barms on every night, not just quiz nights, as the rest of the pub food prices are scandalous

Stubled upon this pub on our walk through Cartmel. Wednesday is pie night. Lovely homemade pie. The pub dog was very friendly. Would highy recommend.

We just went for dinner, didn't stay. The food was lovely. Bit short of vegetarian options but accommodating with requests. Service was good. We went for a drink in the bar after, but it was empty, which seemed strange for a Saturday night but it was pleasant enough.

Called in for a drink here on the off chance due to breaking down nearby- the staff couldn't do enough to help! Very very friendly and helpful- I had to leave a review! Felt very relaxed and comfortable whilst having a pop waiting for the rac man 😆😅 Round the corner from lovely little village famous for sticky toffee pud!

Booked ahead for first night of our stay in Cartmel and liked it so much, we immediately booked it again for our last night. Great atmosphere, excellent food, very friendly staff. Menu wasn't too long, allowing the chef to do everything well - and s/he certainly did. Every item on the menu, including the excellent choice of veggie options, was enticing and our meals were delicious. And not expensive, either. Would heartily recommend.

Excellent all round. The team are super friendly and very efficient, the menu is simple but packs a punch. The only reason we've dropped a star is because some of the mussels in the seafood pasta didn't open and the rare steak was slightly overcooked. Overall it was a super experience and recommend anyone in the area to pop in and try a meal.

We ate there yesterday 1st April after a Great walk in the surrounding countryside.. Very busy area with the Duck Race etc but they managed to squeeze us in and made us very welcome. Food was amazing and l had the Wild Boar Sausages with Mashed potatoes... Everybody loved their choice of food and the Vanilla cream creme brulee was spot on... Pity we didn't have time to stay longer... 10/10 Happy Days... Dog friendly as well so Charlie was made welcome..

Great atmosphere in the bar, we had a good laugh with the locals and their very entertaining dogs. In the Bistro the food was absolutely superb. And to top off the service, a lift back to our lovely holiday cottage by the owner as we couldn't get a taxi . Don't miss a visit to the Pig and Whistle. Wish it was my local.

God's own bar snacks. Simon Rogan has recently bought the village pub in Cartmel, meaning he has a trio of restaurants that mirror Bray exactly ie Pig & Whistle = Crown, Rogan & Co = Hind's Head and of course L'Enclume = (or is greater to!) Fat Duck.

There doesn't seem to have been any makeover (yet) so it is a standard higgledy piggledy pub, with three little rooms, one of which still seems to be for local drinkers. There was an intriguing looking menu, essentially accessible versions of the L'Enclume MO eg Pollock, warm potato salad, bacon, leeks, mussels and lovage emulsion or pear crumble with hyssop ice cream. But we stuck with the bar snacks.

The BRILLIANT bar snacks - a highly aromatic Scotch Egg with a perfectly runny yolk and a lovely mustard mayonnaise, a great Welsh Rarebit on soda bread, and some moreish hake goujons with handmade tartare sauce.

Service was a bit stressed and forgetful, but sweet. A really good light lunch option if you're doing the Rogan/L'Enclume weekend.

Good service? You decide!. Went to The Pig & Whistle specially for lunch on Tuesday but on arrival found they don't do food on a Monday or Tuesday so sent the following email. The reply almost defies belief!

Hi,

Turned up at The Pig & Whistle today for lunch after travelling from Bolton. Your website says that you serve food '12.00 to 3.30 every day' - sadly the reality is a board outside saying that it's only Wednesday to Sunday, which was confirmed by the barmaid. Pretty disappointing and not very good customer relations! I will be interested to hear back from you.

Mick

ps The Kings Head did a pretty good lunch.

Hi,

The old old website is run by the old landlord nothing we can do about that. We have a new one in the making. Glad you had a good lunch at the kings ARMS. We have very good customer relations and we dont appreciate this negative email. Theres always a number you could have called us on to book like most people do.

Craig Harrison

Visited April 2013

All-in for a total of five courses and a nice bottle of wine plus service was £95. Service was very good, friendly and knowledgable. I liked the place and the meal and think for the money they are charging they are doing well. But I wish a couple of dishes were slightly elevated and a few little mistakes corrected, then it would be a strong recommendation. As it is I enjoyed it but wouldn’t make it a must-visit.

The marinated mackerel with radishes and dill was a very pretty plate of food although the breeze in the beer garden played havoc with the presentation. This was a wonderful fresh intensely vinegary dish with soft yielding mackerel. The vegetables including carrot, onion and fennel added textural crunch with more aromatic notes coming from the mustard seed and parsley. This was a fabulous dish and light years away from typical pub grub.

The Pig & Whistle in Cartmel is Simon Rogan’s local (in the sense that he lives around the corner and it’s his). After a recent meal at L’Enclume (here) I hung around for a Sunday Roast and a few bar snacks. Star dish: Roast Suckling Pig and all the trimmings.
