My husband and I had our Christmas Day lunch at the Windmill this year. With it being our first Christmas together as a married couple we wanted a special treat and having visited the Windmill a fair few times we know it’s always a delicious choice. The food was faultless as always, from the amuse bouche canapés to the mini mince pies at the end of the meal. We particularly loved the fillet steak we both had for main - I could eat that truffle jus with every meal ever! Thank you so much for making Christmas Day 2019 such a special and memorable occasion.

Had a pre Christmas lunch here today with family and enjoyed a superb meal. The pub is warm and welcoming and the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was excellent and enjoyed by all, hope to visit again very soon

A group of six of us booked and visited the Windmill pub/restaurant for dinner and were all very pleasantly surprised by the excellent meal that we had. The Windmill has a good ambiance, the staff are efficient and very friendly and the food was a delight. We had a three-course meal plus wine and enjoyed it all. Presentation of the food was good, speedy and tasted delightful, they have a good chef for sure! Prices were fairly normal for local public house dining. We will be returning!

This old converted pub had ambiance with perfect lighting and not too many tables crammed in, which give the feeling of welcoming and homely. The service was excellent from start to finish and the food just perfect. We started with the Scotch egg which was flavoursome and the egg perfectly cook, and then the fillet steak cooked as requested medium rare served with chips. There is a good choice of beers and wines to compliment the meal and just a great place to relax and enjoy dam good food. You will need to book but well worth a visit.

What a fantastic find you must try it. It’s tucked away just off the main road and quite easy to find. It’s not a traditional pub so don’t expect a big bar area but it’s well laid out and the tables are set nicely apart which is perfect if you are looking for a nice pint with some traditional well cooked food. Staff are friendly and the service is great the menu covers for all so you will not be disappointed. My recommendation would be go for the scotch egg to start you won’t be disappointed.

Visited after a shopping trip to Freeport. It’s a small venue with ample parking and age helps to build the atmosphere. The menu for lunch wasn’t huge, but it had all I want. The starter was a glazed smoked Haddock omelette, served in a small frying pan, chef was worried that it would lose character as I didn’t want cooked cheese, but he was wrong, it was quite superb with delicious flavour and a perfect texture (not easy to achieve). The main was one of the best quality beautifully cooked steaks I have ever eaten. The chips were well cooked the beans with smoked almonds were beautiful. Dessert was a lovely chocolate fondant with Pistachio ice cream. Staff were helpful efficient and friendly. Toilets very clean. A lovely stop off after shopping, well worth a visit Thanks for a delicious lunch

I had been wanting to come for so long ~ it was well worth the wait - lovely venue, superb food, nicely presented, beautiful flavours. I had Pumpkin soup to start, the seeds and shavings were a lovely taste. Although initially disappointed it wasn’t accompanied by bread, you didn’t need it, the wholesome soup was very filling. Fellow diners had Haddock omelette. Main was Smoked cheddar, onion & almond tart with braised red cabbage. The tart was encased in a sweet shortcrust pastry, flavours complemented each other & the red cabbage was a lovely side. Others dined on Roast Beef & Skate, plates were cleared. We indulged in some thick cut chips, oh my, fluffy & crispy. Two of us had Steamed Seville Orange Marmalade pudding - absolute heaven, comfortingly warm with a lovely custard. Belgian Chocolate was apparently delicious as testified by a empty dish. Coffee and teas followed ~ a great meal ~ will definitely return - it’s a nice run out although it’s barely 5 mins off A120, ample parking. As it’s small - definitely book to avoid disappointment. I am told by bill payer even with drinks added it was still a reasonable bill. Well worth a visit!

First time at the Windmill. Had an evening meal with my family. Not disappointed at all. Lovely decor, great service, amazing food & not rushed at all. They obviously only book the table once per evening, plenty of time to enjoy the meal with a relaxed ambience. The Parmesan crisp & caramelised onion pre starter with homemade bread were an outstanding start to a fab meal. The omelette for starter was amazing, so was the lamb & beef. The waitresses know their stuff & serve you in an unhurried but professional way. The toilets were spotlessly clean with individual hand towels. A big plus in my book. Definitely worth a visit & we will be returning. First class experience.

Finally managed to book a table as we had been meaning to try this restaurant after having heard good reviews. Lovely old worldly charm to the resturant and bar. Greeted by friendly staff. We had the Scotch Egg and Haddock Omlette to start and shared both. Very nice. The Scotch Egg could do with a little flavouring as the meat was quite dense. Followed by Skate and Chicken in a Thyme and Leek Sauce needed more salt.. Again both nice. Veg were a little on the hard and potatoes were undercooked. I do like them al dente but these were too hard. Reasonably priced. It was nice but there are other places just as nice

6 of us went for a Saturday meal here, everything was perfect, I had scotch egg with mustard mayonnaise to start, followed by fillet steak and finished with marmalade steamed sponge pudding. Food was cooked to perfection, the steak melted in my mouth, the best steak I have ever had anywhere. The team from front of house to kitchen are well organised and good at their jobs. Polite applause for everybody!

As the title suggests it was our second visit to this restaurant. Often after a fantastic meal the next visit fails to live up to your expectations. But at the Mill it was as good if not better second time around. Having ordered we were presented with whitebait and Marie Rose sauce.Freshly cooked and delicious. Starters were mushroom soup and smoked haddock omelette. Mains were filet steak and venison sausages. All were well cooked and yummy. Now the only two problems. 1. We couldn't manage a dessert. 2. We didn't find this gem sooner. Will definitely be back. On a regular basis. Oh. And the service is friendly and excellent.

My wife and I have been coming to this venue for a number of years. The food has never been bad or average, it is always brilliant. You need to come and eat here.

Beautiful rural setting, buildings, garden and cosy atmosphere. The food and service are both excellent and the menu reasonably price. This has to be one of the best places to eat in Essex

Firstly, check the website for their opening hours, as trip advisor is incorrect. They are open on Wednesday lunchtimes (closed Monday and Tuesday all day). I'm glad we checked, as we would have missed out on some truly fantastic food. Great location / building, wonderful service, and fantastic (and original) food. What's not to like? We'll certainly be heading back. Thank you!

Mid week dinner but quite busy and I can see why. The food was excellent and the environment cosy in an English country pub way. At the more fine dining end of the scale but resonable value. Will definitely return. Staff were friendly although the service was almost too leisurely - not the place to come if you want a quck meal!

This is a find this place. Its rare to find an intimate pub bistro that is exceptional in all its courses but our meals were. We were warmly met on arrival and had a lovely drink at the bar as we were a little early. Shortly afterwards we were escorted to our table where i noticed a birthday card for me- lovely touch. The courses were all excellent. I had the smoked haddock omelette so tasty, followed by the bream on a tapenade of vegetables. To finish a perfect chocolate fondant with a lovely pistachio ice cream. All plentiful and excellent. We chose a Sancerre which went well with our courses. All of us loved our food and im pretty certain i will return.

I ate for the first time at the Windmill, I will definitely return! The food is wonderful and the service is brilliant. I'm a vegetarian, there were a couple of options for the starter and one option for the main but boy was it a good option! Cheddar and leek tart with a hazelnut crumble, it was so cheesy and delicious! My family's said, the meat dishes were great too. Dessert was chocolate fondant, again, delicious and beautifully presented! The setting was lovely in the countryside and there was a lovely atmosphere. Everything was brilliant! Make sure you book as it can get very busy. I saw that the was a room for private dining which would probably be a lovely option for a birthday or other celebration.

My partner and I visited having heard great reviews. Booked a table mid week, around 7pm. The restaurant was practically empty, we didn’t order a starter as we just wanted a main course. Both of us ordered fillet steak. At £30 each we expected a lot more given other restaurants offerings. Disappointment was not the word. Piece of steak and portion of chips and that was it, nothing on the side, no bed, no salad, bare plate. Felt as if we had been completely ripped off. Made it clear to the waiting staff (who were lovely and not at all at fault) we weren’t charged for drinks but will not be returning. Up your game if you want to keep those sort of prices with little to offer.
