Excellent, pub and hotel. Booked in here for a stop over on the 26th May while on a motorbike tour of the moors. It's a biker friendly place and the bikes are kept behind a locked gate. Wolfgang, his wife, (apologies but I didn't get her name), Scott and Ariana were the apitome of hosts. Friendly welcome and enjoyed a good chat with their customers. Chef and kitchen staff, (apologies again as I don't know their names) cooked excellent food. German and English food available, all well presented and the taste would grace any top end restaurant. A variety of beers, the ones we tasted were very good. I would highly recommend this place to anyone for a visit or stop over. We have booked in for the German/ English beer festival in August, complete with umpah band.
My husband and I love going to this pub because the food and the service is excellent. You’ll find us on table 4 on a Sunday enjoying a carvery feast. What can I say....6 meats to choose from and everything else help yourself, all cooked to perfection with no soggy vegetables to find here all just fresh and crunchy straight from the pub garden. We also enjoy burger night on a Thursday, the smoked brisket burger with cheese and bacon is a particular favourite, totally delicious but not forgetting the buck burger or the wild boar and chorizo burger. In addition, there is an extensive authentic German menu, the schnitzel is fantastic and has become a new favourite! As I said we love going to this pub and highly recommend! Thanks Wolfgang and the rest of the team, see you tomorrow
Ashamed to say I've lived near Helmsley, only a few miles down the road from the Buck, for the last seven years and never been in it. Called in today for a few drinks and some fish and chips after a nice walk up on the moors. Blown away! Staff incredibly friendly, great German beers on tap and lovely food. As our local village pub has closed recently, I think we will be making it our new haunt. Thoroughly recommend it.
We had a beautiful meal last night in the Buck Inn - we sat in their lovely beer garden in the sun and I had the fish platter from the specials board, it was cooked to perfection, seasoned to perfection and the fresh seasonal vegetables were beautifully cooked, still vibrant in colour and al dente - just like they should be! Really was the nicest salmon I think I’ve ever tasted! I hope it sticks around on the specials! Thanks Wolfgang and Co!
Excellent food, great atmosphere and the owners are very welcoming and go out of there way to make you feel welcome, I cannot speak highly enough, it is a place that is well worth the visit a must try when Wolfgang is in the kitchen you are guaranteed a special dish.
Can't recommend this place enough. Lovely staff and owners. Log fires burning giving it a cosy atmosphere. Took my wife here for our 1st date 4 years later to the date we had our wedding reception here 14/02/2018 we had a carvery and all our guest were blown away. We've had the carvery and other meals the standard of food is exceptional. Thankyou to Wolfgang the staff at the Buck inn for having us

Great food, great showers, lovely view and very nice staff- would definitely recommend, both for camping and as a hotel!
Stayed here over New Year's Eve and it was lovely. Had an evening meal for me, wife and daughter that we all enjoyed very much, rooms were good (Will be great for walkers going through on the Coast to Coast) and the breakfast was superb!
Can see how this would be a great place in Summer, first time I've stopped off in Chop Gate in years as we normally drive through to Helmsley.
Thanks a lot for your warm hospitality :)
Had an amazing day at German mini beer festival, one of the best days in a long time, lovely friendly pub with great staff

We had our wedding meal and drinks here on 14th February 2018 absolutely fantastic night! Food was awesome, staff are brilliant everyone had such a good time. Thankyou so much Wolfgang and staff first class! xxx
Another great meal cooked by Wolfgang! Best chef a close second with robin!
Amazing food well worth the journey from Bridlington!
Well done guys!
Great place. Friendly staff, excellent food at reasonable prices. Comfy beds. What more could a walker want?
We were bought a voucher for afternoon tea, which we used today, we did not know what to expect,it was excellent, from our telephone call to book today, and the young gentleman who was looking after us today, which I'm sorry to say we did not get his name, And can I please let you know, which I'm sure you know already, he is a credit to your business, very polite, attentive, even when he was getting busy, with fellow customers, the afternoon tea, was beautiful, fluffy sandwiches which melted in your mouth, scones which my husband commented were the best he had ever had, and a good pot of tea, which I enjoyed, my husband was sampling the very good lagers that were on tap, so he was a very happy bunny, so thank you very much, we will be back.
Stayed with my dad after a long stretch on the Cleveland Way. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the owners made us feel very welcome indeed. Having been in the pub trade myself for almost 20 years, I must admit I thought a pub with a German twist in the countryside was brave, but it works. We had a great night supping several German beers, had a lovely schnitzel each with a lovely mushroom sauce!! Great portions, fresh ingredients. Just when I thought it couldn't be better, I woke up headache free!! German beers alright with me!!
What an oasis this place is. The Buck inn. After 13 miles in constant rain and over very gruelling terrain up and down numerous steep long inclines we reached Clay Bank carpark to be collected by Wolfgang. The owner. He was like a knight in shining armour in his Audi Q7. We decided not to pitch up our tent in his field but checked in to his B&B instead. Now eating fab food and drinking good beer. Bliss x
Such a homely, welcoming place to stay as we walk the Cleveland Way. Wolfgang could not have been more accommodating, cooking us wonderful vegan food for dinner and breakfast. Unique selection of German beers on tap. Would stay again!
Had a pub stop over in our van, Beautiful Food and German Beers.
Had a Beautiful Full English Breakfast with quality ingredients the next day.
Looking forward to didn't stay in Hotel so can't comment on rooms.
Excellent place to call, has 6 to 8 German lagers on tap plus 3 taps of Timothy Taylor's, Sunday dinners very good with everything genuinely fresh , how many places give you properly cooked asparagus with Sun lunch? Remainder of menu has Germanic flavour , all food is excellent. Very popular with walkers and dogs very welcome
This place delivers exactly what it advertises. This is not a posh location but a walkers inn. Muddy boots and dogs are welcome. So with that, do not expect luxury. These are simple accommodations, but it’s clean and comfortable. WiFi in the rooms (or my room) was nonexistent and no cell service, but good service in the bar area. Wolfgang is such a nice man and cares about his guests. FYI, fellow walkers stayed at the Wainstone Hotel and said it was awful and they left as early as they could. Stay at Buck Inn.
We went for a ride out and popped in for lunch.....they had completely sold out of food!! As we arrived a man immediately told us that they had no food (apart from the huge collection of cakes), so we decided to stop for a drink and come up with a plan b. There was a large selection of lagers and 3 beers. I had a nice pint of Timothy Taylor's and my husband had a lager shandy. Although we didn't eat, the welcome was warm, the pub and toilets were spotless and the menu looked very tasty! It would seem that we will have to go back to try the food 😉
This is easily one of the best pubs I've ever been to. It's small, quiet, and feels like you're coming home. The selection of beers are great, the food is amazing (I had the burger - highly recommend) but Wolfgang, Helen and Catherine, who run the place are really what makes this place special. Very welcoming, super helpful and lovely to talk to. We camped in the beautiful garden for one night and woke up to have a superb full english breakfast. If you're coming past this way, or deciding on either staying at Kirkby or Chopgate on your Coast to Coast walk, definitely come here, you will not regret it!
Quite unique country pub serving regular British fayre and popular German dishes such as schnitzel, spätzel and strong wheat bier.
Very quiet when we visited midweek and food served in a timely manner by friendly staff.
Dog friendly and clean toilets too.
What a lovely pub! After 10 miles through the moors and aching ankles, we were so happy to come into Chop Gate and find an open pub still serving food. The lady behind the bar was so friendly, fast service and the food was absolutely GORGEOUS! My partner got the steak and it had the best onion rings I have ever tasted. My salmon was delicious. Conflake cake and Bakewell tart were also the best we have tasted! Will definitely make this a new favourite stop off point on hikes 🩷
We had a very good meal here on a lunchtime. Good quality food, different types of dishes and great service. Set in a beautiful countryside location. Would highly recommend going here.
There is an alternative history in which this country pub with rooms stayed derelict and no one got any delicious beer, or any all meat gluten free and amazing sausages, or rich tasty stews, or a comfy bed after a long walk in the moors. Instead, Wolfgang and Helen arrived having been around the world (including Australia), and made all those good things happen. So, I’m glad we live in this history, recommend you drop into Chop Gate from the moors and dales to enjoy some fine things from Baveria and equally fine things from
Yorkshire. They make the day much better.
Fantastic location and good selection of beers. We booked for dinner and food was delicious and authentically German. Friendly staff and the bonus of being completely dog friendly and allowed in the dining room, which makes it special when on holiday or after a walk. Helpful and accommodating to a severe peanut allergy. Will definitely be back.
Just had a wonderful lunch at The Buck Inn. I remember having a quick bite there years ago and sat outside. This time we ate in. It's very cosy and welcoming and has a lovely menu (we had a burger, schnitzels, Bratwurst hot dog and sausage ciabatta). The lady that served us was very friendly and the chef came out to ask us if were enjoying our meal - to which the answer was a definite 'Yes!' as it was delicious. They evidently do offer overnight accommodation and with a welcoming atmosphere and the amazing views, is surely a good option.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Myself a hunter schnitzel and spaetzle and my husband a goats cheese salad followed by german strudel and sticky toffee pudding. Delicious.
How an excellent Spring fest in aid of Mountain Rescue. Good by the band, Bagpipe player and Guitarist. We stayed over night in nice comfortable room. Meals were good.
Lovely welcome from Wolfgang who's German and wears lederhosen! Lots of German lagers and beers to choose from as well as German food. The camping field was great (like butter and stone free) as were the shower facilities. Could be a queue for the shower though if it's really busy.
Wolfgang will even drop you off at the setting off point of the C2C/Cleveland Way to save you from trudging up the road!
Friendly staff and locals, and the food was amazing. I had a naked burger and it was freshly made and huge!
Friendly place to go if you are in Chop Gate. Good food and lovely service. We had the Sunday lunch which was just what we needed after a long walk on the hill. Venison was delicious as was the lamb.
Best German Vegan meal outside of Germany. I had vegan bratwurst, my wife had vegan schnitzel, both excellent. German lagers on draft too. We stayed in hut at end of garden. Shared shower could be a bit cleaner Breakfast excellent, homegrown fried potatoes.
Only popped in randomly for a coke on my bike whilst passing as it looked like a nice place to stop.
Lovely little pub, and although I didn't eat, I bet the food is lovely....well worth a visit if passing !
