We were there last Wednesday, and I can't do better than quote what my wife posted to her Facebook profile about our visit.
"The chef at Church Street Tavern never fails to surprise and delight me. I always forget how delicious the food is here until we go again after an extended absence. Whether it is the mashed lentil and garlic on tiny toast as a complimentary pre-dinner bite, the homemade bread with butter, or the baked alaska, honeycomb, and nougat for dessert, all of it is a taste riot on the tongue. One can forget how good food can taste when cooked well and in surprising combinations.
Last night was steak night and
Reg Webb
went for the rump with tomato/mayo relish (a fresh tomato concoction) and chips with rocket salad. Steaks are always paired with the wine of the evening. He was most pleased. I had plaice with shrimp, capers, and broad beans swimming happily together in a buttery olive oil and herb sauce. That and with a side of new potatoes and new spring onions, also buttery, I was a happy camper. YUM.
Serve all of that with wonderful staff and you have quite a winner here. I can't remember liking a restaurant half as well as I do these folks."
Great staff who provide a lovely relaxed atmosphere in a lovely old building. Nice and varied beer wine and spirits menu along with lovely local food. We are huge fans. Thanks guys.
A gorgeous roast dinner and cooked my beef through at my request. One of the best cauliflower cheese dishes I've have out. Only downside was the few puddings were a bit too fancy for me - I love a hearty pudding but none were to my taste on the menu.
As an American experiencing my first "Sunday lunch," I have to say it was delicious. Nice portions and great drinks. Not bad for the price.
OMG. So third time now we've been and somehow the food just gets better. Great decor and the service is quick and professional. Bonus being as soon as you sit down you get a bottle of still water with no charge. Why all restaurants don't do this is beyond me. Now to the food. We had Sunday roast. I had the beef and it was amazing. Also probably had the best roast potatoes I've ever had. They were epic. I had Cauliflower soup for a starter that was also delicious. Highly recommended.
Visited for a pre show drink, first visit, very impressed with the ambiance and decor, very comfortable seating and lounge bar music vibe.
Nice selection of beverages with table service only, will definitely return to check out the food menu soon.
Would have preferred a Gin Bowl Glass, Grapefruit as advertised rather than Lemon with my selected Gin, but still tasted great.
Always a great experience, the staff are always friendly and polite especially Tom in the restaurant. The food is consistently fantastic, using the best seasonal produce to create exceptional dishes. The impressively curated wine list helps too...
On Michelin Guide - we were not disappointed. Great food and friendly staff.
Absolutely brilliant restaurant and dining in the centre of Colchester. Booked up with ease online. The place has a lovely quirky feel to it, certainly not a chain, definitely its own enigmatic style. Food was great, starters and mains all brought out not too quickly or slowly. The food was of the highest quality, extremely tasty and a decent price for a high quality dining restaurant. Thoroughly recommend
The food was great and the service very polite and welcoming. The beer selection was as expected, all keg or bottle, but some reasonable options. Lost the 5* as the food did take longer than expected to arrive. However, it could be that it was mostly cooked from scratch.
We had a delightful evening last week. Superb atmosphere with great service from all of the staff , especially Alfie. The food was both inventive and delicious. Would highly recommend.
Stopped here for a lunch in Colchester as we were passing though. The bar area is very cute with bench window seats, and allowed the dog in. The service was alright, it was really quiet in the restaurant so I expected a bit more friendly service, but was just average. The food was really great, but the portion size was a bit lacking, especially for the price. I’m not upset about spending good money on food, but I would like it to feel satisfying. I got the mussels and fries and the mussels were very good! I was good with the amount of food I got, but my husband got the corzetti pasta and he was left a bit hungry, although he really enjoyed it. Next time, I would try the small plates and get a few to share.
