We just had the most wonderful meal here. Fantastic food and excellent service. Highly recommend and fantastic for those with families. Also very dog friendly too. My two boys loved the outside play area and hubby enjoyed the beer so traveling home with a very happy bunch. Many thanks.
Fantastic place to visit. Great beer garden for kids, fantastic ale for adults and the food is for just for everyone. Would Deffo be my local if I didn't live 200 miles away.. It's a must if ever in Somerset.. (April 2015)
Back at the New Inn 12 months after our last visit and we made it a priority to call in for a few beers and a gorgeous meal. It didn't disappoint, absolutely fantastic food, super friendly staff and a pub with real character. Oh and the kids love the play area again in the sunshine. Bloody love this place. Thanks Very much. (April 2016)
A mix of locals at the bar/seating area, and tourists dining. Probably best to book ahead, since seating is limited and there are not too many independent restaurants in the locale. Parking is opposite the Inn, with on road parking available. A little tight, but okay.
Food portions are large, so value is good. Everything was tasty too. Vegetarian options were limited. The menu is available online.
The New Inn, in Cross, is a fantastic example of Ye Olde English Pub - quintessentially charming and choke full of historic character. Strategically located just off the A38, the New Inn stands as yet another quaint jewel on the string of beautiful hills known as the Mendips - one of Somerset's many Areas of Natural Beauty (AoB).
On this occasion, a gloriously sunny day, my daughter and I stopped by for some lunch. We were greeted warmly and personably by staff. We hadn't made a reservation, regardless, we were accommodated at a lovely bay windowed table. The menu, updated weekly, was an eclectic mix of meals all made with locally sourced ingredients. Our mains, lasagne and a revelationary vegetarian curry, were stellar. Our dessert, a very posh bread pudding was, in a word, sublime. We retired, with a couple of pints, to the rear garden and enjoyed the sites, the suds, and the sun.
So, whether you're on route somewhere or you've chosen the Mendips as your destination, The New Inn is a great watering hole. With paths up into the hills and along the famous Strawberry Line, you're not short of things to do. Kids? They will love the play area out back. Just remember to book ahead, it can get busy on the weekends. If you haven't booked, don't let that put you off, head on over - they will gladly do their best to accommodate you.
Here's hoping you enjoy your next outing there. Let me know when you do. 😊🤞👍👌
Lovely country pub, with friendly staff, nice beer garden with lovely views (sun trap!) and top notch food!
The kids (4 & 6yrs) loved the outside play area, it’s worth noting that they are quite a few steps up to the garden and it is quite steep on the grass play area.
The food was lovely, freshly cooked and so tasty. Highly recommend the chicken breast with bacon, chive mash and Boursin cheesy sauce! The chips were also super tasty and were a bit like roast potato chips (stole some of the kids 😂).
The car park isn’t very big but we managed to get parked ok on the road a little bit further down in the village.
We will definitely visit again.

Popped into this pub as I was staying up the road in a near by hotel. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious too - would definitely recommend and would come back ☺️ had a really nice feel to the place and made me feel welcome as a solo traveller
Been twice had great time both visits and food was lovely 😋😃
Really lovely pub that does great food and is dog friendly. I got the Cajun chicken and then the nut brownie caramel dessert, soooo yummy! Also the short haired barmaid makes a really good Jack Daniels and coke :)
Brilliant little place excellent food and great Value for money, really warm and welcoming staff and they made sure we had a great experience,
The only thing that spoiled our experience was towards the end of our meal a family with very loud kids running around the dining area came in but this was out of the staff's control. But we very much enjoyed ourselves and would recommend to anyone thinking of stopping by :)
Staying locally and recommend here. Lots of choice for specials. Reasonable prices. Went back to try more but had staffing issues and was reservations only.
Second time at this beautiful pub. Great selection of ales kept perfectly. Both bar staff and serving staff very friendly and welcoming. Special boards and menu give a very wide range of food. I had the smoked fish fisherman's pie and was really good. Infact probably the best one I've had. Top marks all round from my visit, woukd say booking a table is advised its that popular and a stones throw from Cheddar Gorge.
