This is a lovely place.
First things first - it isn't a cafe, it's a place you go to for a drink and some kind of cake. Don't come here expecting to find lunch.
The staff are very efficient, pleasant and helpful.
The drinks cover the normal range. The hot drinks are well made and served, they have some cold ones too.
...but cake is what this place is really about. They are exceptional. You'll normally have a choice of around half a dozen "regular favourites" and the same "specials of the day". The portion sizes are excellent (but not entirely diet friendly).
The cost is reasonable, the value is excellent. It's going to cost you a bit under £5 per person for a hot drink and a piece of cake.
The location is extremely peaceful. The decor is interesting and varied. There's an art gallery / studio each side which are well worth a look. There is a range of different types of seating.
You can sit outside, but it's a total suntrap, with no shade available.
It's slightly hard to find, partly because the entrance to the complex tends to hide the sign, so it's easy to drive past. It's at the rear of the first cluster of barns you encounter when you are entering Datchworth on the road from Mardley Hill. If you see a fishing lake on your left, you've gone too far.
Absolutely loads of space in the car park.
They do have a good, clean toilet, but finding it is less easy. Ask the staff for directions.
Extremely good afternoon tea with lovely fresh sandwiches and rolls. Delicious scones, cream, jam and lots of cakes. The friendly staff will even box up anything you can't eat. I have to say there was so much we three couldn't eat it all. Love the vintage atmosphere. Deserves to do well. There were some amazing cakes on the counter if you just want to pop in for tea/coffee and cake. Well worth a visit. You won't be disappointed.
We came for a birthday afternoon tea with multiple dietary requirements (vegan, vegan and gluten free, vegetarian) which were really well accommodated. The food was delicious, varied and beautifully presented. Everyone was super friendly and the gluten free birthday cake was an absolute treat. The amazing amount of attention was obvious and we had a great time. Definitely will be back for more.
Update: We did come back in July and again had a great experience.
Lovely tea room, with delicious food and tea. They were able to cater to all our dietary requirements, including gluten free and vegan. All members of our party were very happy with their afternoon tea.
Wonderful afternoon tea this morning! Me and my partner love afternoon teas and both agreed this was one of the best we’ve done. Scones and cakes were so fresh and tasty and everyone was so friendly and accommodating with food preferences it made for a perfect afternoon! Highly recommend :)
3 of us had afternoon tea at vintage tea rooms this afternoon and it was absolutely delightful. As soon as you enter you feel the lovely friendly atmosphere and ambience. Food was delicious and so fresh. Lovely hot tea and we all had to take doggy boxes home as they serve up so much. My husband finished it off at home and agreed how delicious it was. I shall be returning. Best afternoon tea I've had in a long time and excellent value. Puts some of the st. Albans hotels to shame where I've had overpriced poorly made food. Thank you ladies for making us feel so welcome and providing an excellent service 🥰
Went for afternoon tea for my daughters 'baby shower'. Food was superb and staff very polite and friendly. Very attentive. Excellent price
Really enjoyable tea and cake stop! Lots of teas to choose from and lots of cakes. I had a gluten free Victoria sponge, and my husband had a chocolate and black cherry cake. They had a few allergy options including gluten free and vegan. Cosy atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Highchair was available for our 9 month old. They weren’t doing sandwiches unless you had booked an afternoon tea in advance, but we saw some come out and they looked great. Would definitely return!!
Our first visit.
A lovely afternoon tea, it was all super tasty, scones were possibly the best we've had at an afternoon tea.
Looking forward to a return visit.
Fabulous eclectic tea room. Service was great, food tasty, and the atmosphere just like my nans house. Thank you ladies for making my daughters birthday. We will certainly be back
Went for Afternoon Tea and the scones and the cakes were amazing. One of the best I have ever had (and I have had several). Would definitely like to return one day.
We enjoyed a very good pot of tea with vintage cup, saucer and milk jug. I had a medium smooth flavoured pleasant Americano.
We can recommend the coffee and walnut cake and the raspberry and white chocolate cakes.
Good value and generous slices of cake. Pot of tea for one person was enough for two cups. Americano was a generous size.
Atmosphere, decor and service excellent.
