Best fish and chips I've ever eaten!! My husband and I don't go anywhere else now as other fish and chip shops don't compare! The portions are so generous and the batter on the fish is unbelievable! The place is a hidden gem!

Not our first visit but The Scrap Box serves the best fish and chips for miles and miles. I love this place. Friendly, spotless and just a little gem. Thank you again

What a great little find! Driven past it a few times on the A1079 on the way in to York. Looks like a toilet block from the outside so never really thought much of it, but I was very wrong! Lately they’ve had a sign outside saying they’ve been voted in the Top 50 Fish and Chips in the UK, so I felt it was time to give it a go. Upon entering, was greeted with an extremely clean and tidy yet simple layout of the shop. Counter at the front and seating to the left. The seating area is adorned with bags of potatoes, batter mix and wooden pallets giving it a funky look. The menu is quite simple. It’s basically fish, chips, sausage and accompaniments (peas, curry sauce etc). The small menu does however mean what they do is always fresh and tasty ! On this occasion we settled for the mini fish and chips each. When it came out (see photo) the batter had a lovely crispy finish to it (but not hard) and the chips were perfect too. Crisp but not hard. Tasty but not greasy. Everything cooked to perfection. I fancied a potato scallop (I think you call them potato fritters Up North!). The closest thing they had was a Fish Pattie, which turned out to be quite the revelation! Two layers of sliced potato with a layer of fish in the middle, which was then battered and fried. This was immense and like nothing I’d had before. All in all, excellent food in a simple but homely and clean environment. It’s not somewhere for a romantic date evening, but definitely a “must-stop” for a good lunch or fish and chip supper to eat in or takeaway. Will be back (and in fact, have! And had this fish bites. And they were good too!)

Over all its good quality but I wouldn't put it in top 50 in whole UK. Granted that was in 2017 and 2018 and since then there was pandemic and the supplier could be different. The portion is big and nice and everything was super fresh. Overall I would give it solid 7/10. If you are in the area it is worth stopping by for a quick bite.

Popped in for late tea. Really nice battered fish and chips. Had heard good reviews but always driven past, wish I had visited sooner. Despite the late time freshly fried and taken away and eaten at the area at the back.

Wanting some lunch, found this chippy by accident on a visit to York but would go again if in the area. Small seating area inside, very clean. Only had chip butty but freshly made with generous portions. Really nice chips.

Consistently tasty fish and chips. Worth the drive to get them (located at a lay-by near Dunnington). Always timely. Always friendly. Great curry and mushy peas, too. Our fav in the area.

We have passed this place several times and to be honest from the outside it looks run down. We were in for a big surprise. The interior is lovely and clean and fresh and the staff incredibly friendly and chatty. The fish and chips were absolutely amazing. I don't think I have had a fish that nice for absolutely ages. The fish was fresh and the batter light and crispy. We will defintely call in again when we are passing and I am going to try their curry sauce and mushy peas (they even have home made tartare sauce). Highly recommend it and it just goes to prove you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

The very best fish and chips in the area! Lovely fresh fish and well fried. Easy place for taking away or pulling up in the car but also a great area to eat in.
