Very nice ambience. The decor and the service was excellent. As a starter I had the pork, as a main the lamb and as dessert the chocolate trio which were all amazing elaborate and excellent sized portions. It was one of the best dining experiences in Edinburgh!
I do enjoy a wander through Stockbridge. St Stephen Street bursting with basement shops filled to the brim with antiques, books and vintage wear; visiting the bustling Stockbridge Market that is always full of couples wearing wellies and taking their dogs for a walk; but most of all visiting Stockbridge as it’s home to some of the best restaurants that Edinburgh has to offer including Stockbridge Restaurant, Purslane, Kilted Lobster and Scan and Scallie.
Excellent meal with friendly service. Food was tasty and moreish. Not pretentious but safe and executed well. Fresh bread and butter with a twist of done dressing marked the beginning of plates of tasty grub
This small restaurant has an intimate and unpretentious atmosphere, with a unique menu showcasing local fare through a relaxed contemporary fine dining experience. I highly recommend it if you're after culinary value, quality and authenticity. . Check out the delectable meal I enjoyed below and read my full review here!
While I’d seen positive reports about the Stockbridge Restaurant, I’d been circumspect about visiting as their PR people had plugged the place to death and I was totally bored of reading about it. However, when one of my annual Christmas lunches was booked there, I was pretty pleased to try it in this context, to see how it handled a large party, with mixed dietary needs and a range of ages.
Living in Edinburgh (and more specifically Stockbridge), I feel spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat out. The Stockbridge Restaurant is a four minute walk from home and I've passed by it on several occasions, checking out the menu and mentally bookmarking it for a special occasion. I was delighted when I was offered the opportunity to review the restaurant around the time of my birthday. My friend Pip and I celebrate our birthdays a couple of weeks apart so it felt the perfect opportunity for a joint celebration. Pip's a fellow foodie too and so as with all my review sidekicks, her job was also to provide me with a dispassionate view of the evening's meal.

Stockbridge is one of my favourite areas of Edinburgh. I love the market on a Sunday, the independent shops and of course the bars and restaurants. It is distinct from the rest of Edinburgh, you feel like you’ve been transported to a small town far away. The waters running under the bridge flowing between the trees lining the banks, remind me more of a shire market town than a suburb of the capital. Sure there are people here wandering along the pavement, gazing into shop windows and aimlessly browsing the shelves, but in Stockbridge the people are equipped with walking stick and satchel, rather than selfie stick and rucksack. There’s none of the tourist trap merchandise, buskers and people statues you get further up the hill, Stockbridge is just that bit classier, more polished, more exclusive.
My friend and I visited the restaurant for an evening meal and were pleasantly surprised by the high standard of food and service. Our meal was exquisite, the fish dishes in particular were cooked to perfection and even the bread was very tasty. The set menu is very good value given the quality of the food. A full review of our experience is on my blog.
What a fantastic fine dining experience! This intimate, below ground-level,charming yet sophisticated restaurant is a must visit for anyone who appreciates fine cuisine in an unpretentious atmosphere.
The menu is on the small side but the selection of dishes is cleverly diverse.
We decided to share a few starters and a main for more variety. The amuse-bouche was Serrano ham with cheese and figs - delicious and a perfect appetizer.
The scallops were expertly cooked and presented - melted in the mouth like butter.
If you prefer cheese after your meal, definitely order the cheese board - it has a fabulous selection of different cheeses.
Complimentary sorbet was also served as a palate cleanser.
As the restaurant can't seat more than about 30, I would say booking is essential.
Do yourself a favor and visit The Stockbridge - you will NOT be disappointed.
ARGUABLY MY FAVOURITE restaurant sits over the road from The Stockbridge Restaurant, so I felt like a bit of a traitor as I snuck down the stairs into this little grotto on St. Stephen’s Street. Toiling with a cold, I was close to cancelling this review, but this would test my views that good food always helps. On first impression, the restaurant has a touch of class about it: it’s homely and cosy, yet spacious with walls adorned with rather interesting artwork. Chef/proprietor Jason Gallagher has held two AA Rosettes here for seven years, and his sterling reputation within the industry suggested we will be well fed. The first page of the menu pays tribute to the various suppliers used by Gallagher, almost a statement of intent if you like. We perused the a la carte menu, the impressive array of dishes went hand in hand with my hankering for some good old honest cooking. It’s worth pointing out that an extremely good value-for-money set menu runs from Tuesday-Thursday, with two cours
One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in my life and the best in Scotland.
The various courses on his menu are diverse, and amazing. The dishes are extremely intricate with layers of flavors. Each bite was a bit different.
Sadly, the owner is closing up shop and becoming a chef elsewhere come end of this Saturday.
We had the 3 course menu at £52 per person, followed by some drinks.
The complimentary bread wasn't anything special, although their chive vinaigrette was pretty good.
For starter I had the pork belly and it was great. Perfectly cooked, great flavour and good portion size.
As a main I had the venison loin, it was delicious and cooked to perfection. The mains come with seasonal vegetables and potatoes, these are pretty bland and honestly not to the same standard as the mains.
I selected the Millefeuille for dessert but it nothing like I expected. There was no puff pastry, this was replaced by rectangles of pure chocolate. I have to say that this was my least favourite part of the meal.
Drinks were good, service was ok.
Overall the food was good but I wouldn't necessarily rush back.
We had an excellent dining experience. The customer service was first class and we were constantly provided with some small additional appetisers while waiting for each course, each of which was served in a reasonable amount of time. The food was nicely presented and very warm and tender. The portions were entirely appropriate for a three course meal. The atmosphere is gentle and calming. The price is very reasonable for the level of attentative customer service and quality food on offer. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
Excellent dining experience. Quiet and very accommodating. We were brought out multiple small servings of appetizers as the meal progressed to keep our appetites ready. The customer service was excellent!
I appreciated the atmosphere of the restaurant and the lighting.
A very atmospheric restaurant with only 14 tables, so quite intimate, with low volume background music and low lighting in the basement. We were served by the head waitress who was excellent throughout the evening. Took our drinks and food orders, corrects the owner when she brought the wrong beer, brought the bill without being asked and saw us out. The best service we have seen anywhere in the world and she’s Scottish too. The food was great from bread, amuse bouchée to starter through to dessert. A limited set menu but interesting Scottish produce.
Is really really good, from bread starter to finished everything cooked perfectly, I also like the way their dessert not overly sweet and have some sourness to balance make it very appetising even after full up. Definitely the best restaurant I had in Edinburgh .Value for money too. Will definitely come back for another day.
Lovely relaxed fine dining experience. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The pork starter was a highlight.
We messed up a reservation and this was 'second best' however if we go back to Edinburgh this would be first choice. The food, service and atmosphere was lovely and the staff were even nice enough to ask us if we wanted a coffee when we were last to leave. If I could give this place 6 stars I would.
A wonderfully relaxed space with fantastic service and gorgeous food. Wonderful experience. At £42 for two courses or £52 for three and bottles of wine starting from £29, it's not the cheapest, but as they say, "You get what you pay for" and what you get is absolutely sumptuous.
Food was delicious, particularly the mains. Great wine list and excellent service, we didn't feel rushed even though the restaurant was busy. A real local gem in Stockbridge!
