We were on sight seeing spree today with the hop on hop off bus. Spent couple of hours at the castle and then walled over to the restaurant, as we wanted an italian restaurant. Pretty nice place bang on the main street. We went for late lunch at 3 pm and very few table were occupied. Staff was very nice and courteous. We ordered couple of soft drinks and a minestrone soup, focaccia and ratatouille for starters and a veg pizza and pasta for main course. All items exactly as expected. Nice taste and presentation. Will love to go back again.
I usually try to avoid restaurants around the Royal Mile, Victoria Street and George IV Bridge as they are a super tourist hot-spot that over charge but I was pleasantly surprised at Vittoria on the Bridge.
It's very Italian, the interior is beautiful and quite swish (a little dark for my taste) but lovely. The waiting staff are super friendly and very helpful - and as per most Italians quite charming.
I was the first to arrive and was shown to our table but it was right in front of the kitchen so asked to be moved - really didnt fancy eating my lunch watching the KP clean the dishes! Happily moved to another table in the centre of the restaurant we perused the menu. Their A la Carte menu is extensive but they also have the mid-week lunch menu which is 2 courses for £11.95, which too has some wonderful dishes available.
For starters we ate : POLPETTE - their own delicious meatballs in a tangy sweet and sour tomato sauce with a side of garlic bread. This is a huge portion for a starter. I'm told it tasted good. The tamato sauce was indeed sweet, thick and very tomato-ey.
INSALATA CAPRESE - mini creamy mozzarella balls, lush vine tomatoes, fat olives drizzled with Extra Virgin olive oil. A really nice clean fresh plate of food.
For mains we ate : VITTORIA’S STEAK BURGER - served in a brioche bun with streaky bacon & smoked mozzarella served with chunky chips & a tomato ragu sauce. This was ok for a burger, if a little dry.
TAGLIATELLE ALLA BOLOGNESE - a classic; egg ribbon pasta coated with a rich minced meat ragu. I ordered this dish and it was really really good. The pasta was soft but not soggy and the ragu was perfectly seasoned with a light sharp tang with a rounded sweetness at the end. No doubt the same ragu as per the Polpette starter.
However the star of the day was the GNOCCHI AI FUNGHI DI BOSCO - gnocchi with porcini & woodland mushrooms, with garlic, parsley and a touch of rich truffle-infused Extra Virgin olive oil. This is simply outstanding and I was so envious when my friend ordered this dish; and a dish that I will be returning soon to order for lunch. The truffle oil elevated the rich woody-ness of the porcini mushrooms. The whole dish worked and it was creamy, light, fluffy, silky and very filling.
Peroni beer washed it all down.
I really should have given this place a go a long time ago - it is a gem in the tourist spot! Great food at great value for locals.
