The two of us ordered half kilo of lime and chilli mussel and half blue cheese mussel - both were so delicious! The texture was very tender and tasted very fresh. The prawn fried noodles was not bad, a good choice if you want a main to balance with the mussels. The seafood chowder was pretty average. But overall a very fulfilling seafood meal!
I revisited after 19 years and it was the same pleasing quality seafood. My favourite is the bowl of mussels. Selection of Scottish style dishes with a mix of international choices.
It's a five; well deserved
Two couples, we wandered along Rose Street and found Mussel Inn; we're very glad we did. We were sat down with menus in what felt like seconds; drinks then food arrived in quick order, as only it should at a lunchtime.
The décor lends a friendly seafood type feel to the place; the chowder was plain knockout, the salad was nicely dressed, and the wine was most agreeable. The staff were attentive, the amenities clean, the bill didn't hurt. Your reviewer found he had made it through to final interview for a job application, so Mussel Inn will forever hold fond memories.
I love seafood and Mussel Inn delivers with some quality seafood dishes - the pots of mussels with the 5 different sauces are delicious, and it is almost impossible not to order more of their crusty bread to dip into the sauce once all the mussels are gone! I normally get the seafood pasta as a main and there is a good variety of shellfish on offer. If you are with others and more than two people order the shellfish pasta one plate may get more shellfish than the other.
We have visited the Mussel Inn numerous times and have never been disappointed. Inside the restaurant you are always given a warm greeting upon approaching the bar, and the restaurant has a very rustic atmosphere and offers a warm and cosy dining experience.
We were fortunate enough to be able to sit outside (given the Scottish summer weather!), and enjoyed the lunchtime specials, which include mussels, chips or salad, endless bread and a drink for £7.95 each, which is great value given the quality of the mussels and the location.
The mussels are always well prepared and come in a variety of sauces. There is also alternative dining options (except for mussels), although I have to say, why go to the Mussel Inn if you are not going to eat mussels.
I have eaten mussels all over the world and you simply cannot compare the quality to the mussels you get here!
Not to be missed if you are in Edinburgh and enjoy your seafood!
My friend and I were visiting Edinburgh and it was our first night here when we decided to try Mussel Inn upon the recommendation of our host.
The place was packed both indoor and outdoor so the staff politely informed us to wait till there's a free table. It only took about 10 minutes when we were called in for indoor seating. We didn't mind as it was a bit chilly outside. The place is casual with lively ambience and light hues interior.
We started with haggis bonbon which one friend thought I wouldn't like. But I actually found it to be well-seasoned and cooked. The crispy coat of the balls match the soft inside of them.
We added mussel platter as starter and then for our main I had a spiced fish stew and grilled sea bass for my friend. All were good and well flavoured.
Ah, seafood – Scotland’s secret shame. Our waters are home to such wonderful produce. Why don’t we eat it? Exporting it just seems like such a waste. Rose Street may be famed for pub crawls, but it also acts as a convenient hotspot to showcase our natural larder to our many foreign visitors, especially during Festival time, so I dearly hoped The Mussel Inn would provide suitable evidence to suggest visitors would leave with a positive impression of our fishy treats.
Even though they were turning larger groups away if they didn't have a booking, the host managed to squeeze me in near the bar and I have to say, I was very happy with both my table and the food. Even though they were clearly run off their feet, the staff were friendly and efficient and my chilli, ginger and lemongrass mussels were the best I've eaten in a long time. In fact it was arguably the best meal I ate during my short stay in Edinburgh. There's a reason why this restaurant is do busy. It's because the food is superb!
Arrived on a busy Friday night without a booking but were still accommodated immediately. waiting staff were very good, courteous and attentive. Food was delivered quickly and tasted delicious. an excellent meal and great experience. will definitely be returning.
Great mussels. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Edinburgh, I always visit this place once a month. Usually have quickie lunch which is cheap and delicious. The dish that you should definitely have is seafood chowder soup and blue cheese mussels....mmmmm yummy!!
We had a nice dining experience at this restaurant, opting to sit outside due to the limited availability indoors. The mussels were so good, bursting with flavor. Considering the reasonable price, the overall meal was a great deal, and we enjoyed the added bonus of a pleasant view while enjoying our delicious dishes.
Wait persons were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious with generous servings. We enjoyed sitting on the outside patio. I enjoyed the King Scallops dish. There was a wide variety of choices on the drink menu. I would highly recommend.
Fantastic seafood at this Rose Street restaurant. Come here for some kicking Moroccan mussels. The sea bass was good too. We also had a sav blanc bottle too. Sticky date pudding was good too! Scallops were good too.
We arrived a little after they opened with no reservation and they sat us right away. We had the Moroccan muscles and the licor or sauce was decadent lightly cheesy and good spices. I loved it so much we didn’t let them take the out so we could lop the juice up w bread. My scallops were succulent and the whole salad was delicious 🤤. I would love to come back. Our server was very new and I appreciated the patience she had w me and my questions. And if she didn’t know the answer she didn’t hesitate to find out for me.
100% satisfied with the blue cheese mussels pot! Super large portion, I can’t stop dipping the bread to the sauce, the mussels are fresh and soooo delicious.
Absolutely mouth watering, will visit again.
The staff is also very friendly and helpful.

Amazing food. Recommend it so much - especially the tomato&basil soup, it was amazing. A bit expensive though but you get what you pay for.
The staff is kind and the food is great. Most of all, I couldn't feel any racist behavior in them. The seats can be filled quickly, so reservations are required. If I have a chance, I would like to visit again.
Amazing food. Highly recommend the chilled oyster and cream mussels.
The staff are nice and helpful.
Truly enjoyed the fresh naturally steam mussels. Just add a little fresh lemon juice and enjoy. The lobster over potatoes with a tomato and green salad was delicious. We selected an Italian Pinot Grigio to complement our seafood dinner. Finished with an expression macchiato and for me an Expresso martini. Great food, drinks and service. We could not ask for more!
Really fresh and large portion of tasty seafood. We opted for the chowder and seafood platter and it goes really well with garlic bread. Highly recommended. Only minor complaint will be that the chowder was more potato-ey and less seafood-y.
