I used to live round the corner from this place and can confirm that it deserves all the praise it has been getting. It does have a wide range of products outside the remit of your average chippy and this adds to it's charm. The £185 bottle of brandy I would suggest is amongst it's most unusual. A must visit place and worth the walk down Dundas St from the city centre.
Best Fish & Chips in Edinburgh... Probably. I've seen good cases made for the Tailend down in Leith, but for me, l'Alba d'Oro is the best chippy in town.
It is primarily a takeway, but it does have very limited bar seating. It does all the chip shop classics brilliantly, with crisp batter and perfectly executed chips. It also specializes in more exotic fayre, with everything from crocodile to shark having featured on the menu.
The other stand out though is the wine list, no you didn't need that wrong, the wine list. It has a thoughtfully put together selection of wines (and beers), particularly Italian, which you can takeaway. It has to be the only place you can get Cod & Chips and bottle of Krug. For this alone, its stands above all the rest.
A great place nice servers and great fish. Has some banging tunes being played. The workers work well together handling customers. 5/5
Great suppers, cooked to order so usually a wait unless you order ahead. Fish and black pudding are excellent. Portion of chips with the suppers could be a bit more generous.
Delicious fish🐟 Nice crispy and flaky batter. Not heavy or dense like others I’ve tried in the past. Chips were average.
Overall, good flavour and a nice takeaway. :) Thank you.
The food is pricey but it is one of the better fish and chips takeaways on this side of town
Good portion, good quality of haddock, good taste! I like the fact that some food (I didn't search them all, but the haddock, chips and steak pie) are sourced from local.
Would like to try something new next time!
Fantastic Fish Supper! The difference between the crispy batter and the tender fish was intense. Chips were on point! Portion was big enough for me without stuffing me too much. Will go back!
Chips where freshly made and haggis tasted good felt £9 for a haggis supper was a bit expensive. Took about 20 mins to cook but everything was fresh and really hot.
Really impressed with ordering system to collection. Food was superb. Staff excellent and extremely obliging. We are a group of 21 bowlers and holding our end of season game. All went well due to L'Aba D'Ora having everything organised. Thank You Goldenacre Bowling Club
The one tip is that if you want to eat-in they typically let people take their food to the pizza place next door as it’s owned by the same person.
The fish and chips IS indeed really good. Its really fresh and probably the best fish I’ve had so far in the UK.
First try of this famous place and we'll be back. Good to see they proudly list suppliers. My battered sausage was huge and still succulent with a light, crispy batter - not too heavy like some places. Fish and chips was well cooked and the chips were a good quality spud. The young lads working were terrific and the place was spankingly clean - not even a licl of grease in the holding tray
