I've frequented this place before for brunch. But never for Christmas dinner. What a treat! The ambience, service, food and efficiency was second to none. Having informed the staff that I had a cocktail at another establishment but just couldn't remember the name, they immediately went away and cheekily googled the other establishments cocktail list! Hah - superb! The cocktail came back and was a delight. I had also mentioned that I like chicken liver parfait (and even though it wasn't served at the weekend) they brought me out a portion - the chef had just finished preparing them for the week ahead. And so if you're looking for somewhere with a touch of class. You'll not be disappointed with this place!

French Toast with bacon, mozzarella and Canadian Maple Syrup, Bubbles & Brunch, Hutchesons Bar and Brasserie, Glasgow. Bubbles and Brunch at Hutchesons, Glasgow. Inside the historic old Hutchesons Hospital located on Ingram Street in the Merchant City is Hutchesons.  Lovingly restored by the Rusk Group and the National Trust for Scotland, Hutchesons is an impressive venue.

Until recently “Hutchesons’ Hall” probably didn’t mean that much to anyone other than Glasgow history buffs, it was one of those buildings that people rarely got the chance to visit – unless you happened to be there for Doors Open Day but now thanks to James Rusk, owner of the Butchershop, the name “Hutchesons” is well-known again as Hutchesons Bar & Brasserie utilises the 19th-century A-listed building that was originally built as a hospital but has lain vacant for far too long…it’s been renovated impressively but still retains many original features, such as the stained glass windows, so the pressure was on the food to match the astounding decor…

If you are in Glasgow and you are looking for one of the most relaxed yet decadent dining experiences available, then you’ll want to be smart like me (oh yes!) and make a reservation at Hutchesons.

We walked through the doorway, from the cold street, to a warm welcome. Stepping across the beautifully repaired and restored mosaic floor, through the Parisian-styled bar, and up the stairs to another place and time.

We were seated in the Grand Hall. The light filtered beautifully through the tall windows. The stained glass, rich in colour and detail.

Our drinks arrived in clear glasses etched with a simple ‘H’. We took in our surroundings, looking up at the magnificent ceiling and trying to measure the height of the room… about as tall as a modern 3-storey house.

Built in 1802, originally as Hutchesons Hospital, the building has since had many uses, including: public library, school, bank, and shops. Now owned by the National Trust this fabulous A-Listed building was damaged terribly by storms in 2008 and took a £1.3 million investment to bring it back to life. Thank goodness for James Rusk and his vision for unique dining experiences in Glasgow!

And thank goodness for soft, warm, oat-topped bread and whipped butter.

Rob and Sarah both chose the soup – a root vegetable broth that came with a big chunk of sourdough bread. The soup had a real depth to it and included lentils, barley, parsnip, peas (argh!) and other stuff… I stopped listening at peas.

Adam and I both chose the Chicken Liver Parfait. I was a little bit disappointed by it’s looks, but it more than made up for that with its flavour. Sweet, rich pate, soft brioche toast and tasty tangy onion jam. Really, really good.

Steak Frites was the main course choice all round. Steak Frites with garlic butter. It was cooked to perfection, we all agreed.

After all that delicious food I exclaimed, “I can’t move. I’m having a pudding!”

I was forced to choose the White Chocolate Cheesecake, the others all picked the Creme Brûlée. None of us were disappointed. Adam said it was in his top 3 Brûlées, and he’s pretty much a Creme Brûlée aficionado.

The service was wonderful, friendly and helpful. Everyone was so pleasant and nothing was too much for them. James even told me he would send me a glass with an ‘H’ on it, – so I am going to hold him to that!

After our truly wonderful meal, Sarah and I were treated to a special behind the scenes peak. We walked along the hallway, past the glass-walled wine store and up the winding stairs of the staff quarters, into the attic rooms, to the private dining room.

With the feel of an Edwardian Gentleman’s Club, this space is a wonderful secret hideaway with a dedicated supply of aged (some over 60 years) fine malt whisky from the Glenfarclas distillery.

As Sarah worked her way round the panelled walls she spotted it – the secret compartment! I think Sarah was hoping for another room, and I was expecting body parts, but behind the panelled chimney breast was a media centre with all the mod-cons should you wish to listen to music, watch a film, hold a video conference or view exciting spreadsheets over dinner.

We couldn’t have been happier with our visit to Hutchesons. Really. We were made to feel so welcome and at ease. The Great Hall is incredibly stylish, opulent and grand, but also so friendly and relaxed. The staff were all very polite, knowledgeable and proud to be there – I like that.

We could have stayed all day, but we had a party to go to, and a non-steep steep hill to find!

Whether you want a drink, a dinner, or a peek at the incredible architecture and interiors, everyone is welcome at Hutchesons.

Initially our first waitress sounded quite knowledgeable during our wine choice but later then twice stretched over my partner's meal to top up her glass and as a result the bottle dripped into her meal. I had a slow cooked poached hen's egg as a starter, I had hoped it would in the shell momofuku style but this was not to be. The second waitress seemed to have some difficulty carve the Chateaubriand and it was perhaps too thickly sliced. However the food was top quality and well cooked. I thought perhaps the food and wine were about 10-15% overpriced even allowing for the outstanding decor. I did not quite get the juxtaposition of the elegance of the surroundings and a bottle of Heinz Tomatoes Ketchup on the table and the jeans, some of them hanging off, of staff.

Second visit. Lunch menu. Slightly disappointed. Tomato and Chilli Soup as a starter very good with a nice after kick. Steak Frittes, (frozen ?) medium rare and cooked as it should be, but I feel perhaps it had not been hung long enough as it was on the tough side.

It good to see mothers and babies enjoying lunch together however although other tables were available I was right next to a high chair which meant I had to move every time their table was being served.

Staff were friendly and polite. Decor and building lovely. Food was tasty but too little . I had cod . It came with 4 thin slices of fried potato topped with a small spoonful of greens topped with a piece of cod which was about 2 inches by 2.5 inches. Looked more like a starter! I mentioned it when I paid the bill. My husband's venison was served luke warm on a cold plate. We mentioned this to waiter ,not as a complaint really as it tasted good ,but more as a helpful observation. Sadly I wouldn't be recommending this restaurant as value for money.

What an amazing place! Great atmosphere with delicious food. The kimchi potatoes were absolutely lovely as was the aubergine stack. Who knew vegetables could be so elevated and tasty! The staff were great. Miguel and his colleagues were very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drink they serve. My new favourite place to visit next time I’m in Glasgow.

Closed for too long. Ordered an ‘old fashioned’ cocktail. Made by Jack. Superbly done. Only gave 3 for atmosphere because it’s quiet so it would be remiss if me to say otherwise. Not eaten here yet; decor great, service great, cocktail great. Will be back.

Friendly service, relaxed setting, and something a bit special. We've wanted to try out this place for ages, and it didn't disappoint. The building makes for a great atmosphere, and definitely feels special, but add that to the great food and genuinely sincere service we were really happy. Little touches like topping up the wine were nice. Definitely book if you plan on going, and it gets super busy at the weekends as you might expect.

"Best Cocktails in Glasgow" should be printed on their shirts! The American gentleman and his colleague served us on Saturday 2 September and delivered a fab experience with "bartender's choice" options and lots of knowledge, passion and welcoming atmosphere the moment we stepped foot into the bar. We perched ourselves at the bar and watched them whip up cocktails for hours! Anyone visiting Glasgow must visit 1802!

I had the pleasure of dining here with some friend last-night , we enjoyed everything that was put in front us . The food was nothing short of amazing and the chefs went out their way to adapt some items to our intolerances like the monk fish with earl grey glaze ( Stunning ) . The wine list caters to everyone and is very fairly priced ; The service and atmosphere is perfect for dining out with friends or for something more intimate. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for good food and solid drink options and one more big shout out to the staff who are absolute amazing at what they do . I will definitely be back !
