What a great meal, we couldn't decide what to have as everything looked so good. We took full advantage of the "eat out to help out" and in a gluttonous display of opulence we ordered two mains each. Big mistake, the portions are generous. I started with the Half hog with Cheese sauce and Beef Brisket, my word, excellent! Proper firm sausage with fantastic flavour, melt in the mouth Beef Brisket, luxurious cheese sauce, on a soft white roll. The best "hot dog" I've tasted. I paired the half hog with signature loaded chips, the steak was fantastic, the chips were intoxicatingly addictive. Was it the cajun coating or the secret sauce?, and of course melted cheese always makes things better. Another two Half hogs were ordered, for the group. Everyone loved them. Finally the odd one out was the New York style chips. I was told it was lovely, a high accolade from a self confessed chip lover. The mac'n'cheese and buffalo chicken balls were delicious making the chips a meal.
Let me just tell you about the single best meal I have had since going vegan. I had a "chicken cheese burger" and one of the milkshakes, and myself and a friend shared fries, sweet potato fries and onion rings. I'll start with the onion rings, because that's what I was most excited about- I hadn't had onion rings since going vegan 4 years ago, and was honestly expecting to be slightly dosappointed. These however, were THE MOST INCREDIBLE ONION RINGS I HAVE EVER TASTED. No joke. The batter was perfect- fluffy and just thick enough to create a perfect dough-to-onion balance. The fries were also great, but honestly the absolute highlight of the meal were the burger and milkshake. The milkshake was divine. The flavours complimented each other perfectly, the coffee cutting through the sweetness of banana and honestly just creating a beautiful taste-party in your mouth. Also the vegan whipped cream and caramel sauce on top OH MY DAYS were those good 😍 The burger, I have no words for though. It was beyond divine, beyond delicious, beyond anything I've tasted before. Not only did it taste fantastic, the fake chicken had the most tender, most incredible texture to it, to the point that it was a hairs breadth away from literally melting in your mouth. So that's the story of the best meal I've ever had, please please PLEASE open a Steak Cattle and Roll in Edinburgh, I promise it would be a hit!
We'd seen Steak Cattle and Roll's giant two-foot long hotdog online, but ordered the more modest one-foot on our visit. Covered in delicious brisket and a cheese sauce, this was still more than enough. My partner wanted a keto-friendly alternative and had the hotdog without the bread. My side order of onion rings was generous, although the slices of onion were a bit too thick and chunky to hold the beer batter, so eating them got a little messy. The restaurant decor is relaxed and prices are very reasonable considering the portion sizes.
