Food was delicious, seriously those burgers are just too jiucy and to make it worse I poured my beef dripping onto the burger making it when messier 😂 but the taste was amazing, the steak was really good too. I've been here a few times and I have never once been disappointed. The service is top notch and you're never waiting long to get served, it's easy to get the attention of the wait staff and to be honest they are quite attentive so they will normally come to your table before being called. Don't think I can say a bad thing about it. The only caveat is that tall people will need to watch their head when walking into the pub it's a bit short. The atmosphere inside is soft and warm, it does hold the smell of scallops if someone orders them in the kitchen but I don't mind that smell, and to be honest is that's the only bad thing about it I think they are doing phenomenal, definitely staff here are top notch and the food is great quality and portion.
My parents and I popped in with a last minute booking, to celebrate my graduation with a little dinner party. The venue was quite cozy, with low ceilings, warm lighting and comfortable seating, giving the air of a pub that invites you to get comfortable. There was plenty of outdoor seating scattered across the grounds around the pub.
We were early for our booking, luckily they had the table ready for us. The table we were seated at was located in between 3 other tables occupied by larger groups, which put us right in the middle of the noise, not ideal but not the worst either, having said that, I think everything after that point was some of the best I've had, the food, the drinks, and especially the service.
We were greeted by Ellie almost instantly as we sat down, and were given drinks and food menus, quite simple and straight forward, a one page menu printed on both sides. We ordered our drinks and starters, both of which took about 5-10 minutes to arrive, I had the negroni ( a go to of mine, when rating places, the black horse, a solid 9.5/10) , my parents had a passion fruit mojito and a non alcoholic elderflower sherbet. Starters were salt and pepper squid and sticky coated chicken. We were constantly checked on to make sure everything was going good, which by all means it was. We then ordered mains and a second drink for my dad, a pineapple mojito. My parents shared a glazed pork belly, and I had myself the 10 Oz ribeye, cooked medium rare, with the beef dripping gravy, which took all of 15-20 minutes to arrive. While I didn't taste the pork myself, my parents definitely loved it. The steak was cooked to perfection, intense flavours bursting out in every bite, served with a side of chips, Portobello mushroom, tomato and an onion nest (which wasn't quite my to liking, but I was too full to eat it by the time I got to it anyways). I washed down my mains with an amaretto sour, which was immaculate and appropriately placed under the after dinner section of drinks on the menu. Georgia was constantly checking in on us, making sure we were comfortable and that everything was to our liking.
Overall, just a few negatives that were completely superceded by the amazing service from Georgia and Ellie, the food (compliments to the chef) and lovely drinks.
I would definitely be returning whenever I can and would completely recommend giving it a try.
It's a 5/5 in my books.
Great pub when its quiet in the evenings during the week.
Staff take your drinks or food orders at your seat which is a nice touch and like hotels that also do.
Have eaten there at christmas time 2022, and found the food good with great service from pub staff.
Nice walks along the tow path of the Grand union canal and the old railway cycle and walking route nearby.
Very nice decor inside the pub and would recommend a visit.
If you are adventurous you could walk or cycle along the Grand union canal to Birmingham at 72 miles away.
A beautiful and welcoming location. The food is delicious and the staff very kind and friendly. And the service was very fast. I have been 5-6 times and it is my favorite restaurant. I'm allergic to dairy and always find different dishes to try .If I could give them 10 stars
Having signed up to the Black Horse App ages ago, I was treated with a voucher for my birthday for a free 3 course meal if someone else with me who paid for the equivalent 3 courses. My husband and I visited last night and had an amazing evening. Our food was served promptly (no long waits) but helpful, cheerful and friendly staff. The food was beautifully presented and outstanding quality. It is the first time I ever remember returning 6 plates (3 each) to the kitchen, completely wiped clean of every morsel!. My husband had a beautiful soup, I had pâté. He then went for Grilled Seabass and I had a Wonderful Steak pie and trimmings. Husband had Blackberry and apple crumble with custard. I had the best sticky toffee pudding ever, with honeycomb ice-cream. Delicious. Compliments to the chef and all the serving team. Can't recommend the pub enough! It's not cheap, but not expensive either.
Wonderful food, great service. Lovely birthday treat.
Highly recommend- friend found this pub due to location and menu choice (vegan options). Staff were impeccable and service was flawless. Nothing was too much of a problem and sharing information surrounding allergies and ingredients was very reassuring. All food was well portioned, tasty, flavorsome and fresh! Drinks arrived promptly, staff checked back to see everything was okay and the service was top notch. Great location pub with lovely views and a real buzz through the pub. Busy, but not too loud and just a delightful visit.

Have visited 3 times in the last couple of months now. It's a great half way meet up spot for us, coming down from Leicester, to meet friends or family from London. Every time the service has been exceptional - just very efficient and incredibly warm/friendly. The food is good and the ambience nice. Perfect spot beside the canal too, for family walks before or after eating. Definitely recommend this pub and would love to name all the staff, last nights name we got was Viki - but they were all equally as good as each other. (Oh yes, last weeks visit was with a gluten free/egg intolerance friend - and the staff were super accommodating and patient - helping her work out what was safe to eat etc). All in all, nothing to fault at this place, and I look forward to returning again soon.
This is my first visit for a few years. The greeting was friendly and we were shown to our table quickly. Ordering went well and our drinks were brought quickly. The main course, steak and ale pie was delicious. The vegetables were well seasoned and the beef dripping gravy was tasty. Dessert was lovely, but sadly not warm. Sticky toffee pudding and custard need to be warmer than room temperature. The apply and damson crumble was somewhat warmer, but still not a hot pudding. Service was overall excellent and both of the ladies who served us were delightful and friendly.
A great place to visit by the canal with amazing food and wonderful service. Our waitress Julie was a friendly and attentive and couldn't do more to make our visit enjoyable. The food is always great here, whether for lunch, dinner or a Sunday roast.
We stopped while on a canal boat holiday and had our 2 year old grandson with us. The staff were very accommodating in seating us in an appropriate area where we wouldn’t feel we were disturbing other diners. However our grandson was very well behaved so it wouldn’t have been an issue. They were very attentive of him and they opened up the back exit when we left so we could get access straight to the towpath. The food was amazing and the service excellent.
