I have been going to Café Café (or Caf’ Caf’ as it’s known by us locals) for more years than I care to admit. It has an excellent and very popular bar which takes up most of the space but it’s the restaurant which has had its ups and downs over the years, so I thought I would go for a meal there and give you my view on how the food is today.

The menu has lots of classic dishes available and others with more interesting flavour combinations. The choice is not huge but it’s varied enough to keep pretty much everyone happy.

To start I had the Café Café prawn cocktail with avocado cream, a take on one of those classics. It was OK but lacked a little piquancy which I feel is required in a prawn cocktail. The avocado cream was equally as ‘OK’, nothing wrong with it but it lacked the pizzazz a touch more citrus would have given it.

My partner’s grilled halloumi with gado-gado salad are unusual bed fellows but actually worked well together, just not as sexily as bed fellows can. But it was a good attempt at blending East and West to make an interesting and tasty meal.

For my main I chose the pork belly with crackling, bubble & squeak, chestnut stuffing and cream cider sauce. This was all perfectly cooked but again lacked a little something and it wasn’t just the fact that there was no crackling. Well I take that back because a small corner of the skin could have passed for crackling, it’s just that 99% was soggy…It was like trying to eat a damp handbag….

So to sum up the food here was fine. Edible and not a total disappointment by any stretch of the imagination, but it lacked a certain something. Maybe it was the lack of punchy seasoning, inspiration or good old fashion effort. Perhaps it was a combination of all three.

Go for the atmosphere and have a good few drinks and I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time.

But for me there is still that niggle knowing that they could (and can) do better.

When looking for a modern bar with a twist, Café Café is definitely a place to visit. The suave and hipster image strikes you upon entering, with marble table tops, trendy music and walls teaming with modern art. My partner ordered a medium rare sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and skinny chips. The food was beautifully presented and the steak was succulent and acceptably pink in the middle. I ordered the tiger prawn green curry with lemongrass rice. The prawns were tender, full of flavour and, when accompanied with the Thai green sauce, made for a delightful meal. However, Café Café is more than just another fine dining restaurant with excellent food. After eating, we ordered from the extensive cocktail list and were dazzled by the barman performing bottle flips and tricks whilst serving our drinks. The atmosphere was young, mainly between the ages of 20 to 30, and vibrant and this was reflected in the background music playing at the bar.

Café Café is definitely a place to have a wonderful evening with great food, an extensive menu cocktails and breath-taking modern art.

Overall, this is definitely a place I will revisit one evening soon. I may also drop in simply to enjoy the ambience, check a few more cocktails and select some snacks from the bar menu!

I had the honey-whiskey sauce venison steak rare, which was lovely, but the sauce was too salty, unfortunately. The starter bread was divine!
