Reviews Outgate Inn

Arrived for a late lunch after a disappointing day in Hawkshead. We had 5 hungry travellers including a 6 year old who was getting ratty because she was hungry. We drove past the Outgate Inn and quickly decided to pull in and see if they offered food. Luckily they did. We didn't really expect much from a small country pub which seemed to be in the middle of nowhere but we would have been happy with just a basic sandwich or plate of chips by this point. We were so pleasantly surprised! The lunch menu was lovely, offering a great range of food; sandwiches as well as "main" meals, and platters (ploughmans lunch, fish platter, meat platter, veggie platter!) And the prices were reasonable too, sandwiches costing around 5 or 6 pound each, mains around £10-£12. The children's menu was lovely, I have quite a fussy child, though not in the usual sense, she doesn't like "baby food" (as she calls it!) And much prefers "real" food, so she was happy to see that the menu wasn't too kid like with the usual fish fingers and chicken nugget options; she chose to have tomato pasta (her favourite!) But she was spoiled for choice between the home made sausage roll and chicken goujons too! The kids meals are a little more expensive than some places at £5.95 a meal, however the meal she had looked lovely, and £5.95 isn't ridiculously expensive- you get what you pay for and the food seemed to be home made! Myself and 2 of the other adults had the daily special burger: a Cajun pork burger with stilton cheese (you could have cheddar instead) served in a ciabatta (which we also thought may have been home made or at least not a cheap bought bun!) With home made chips and a huge onion ring. The burger was absolutely gorgeous, the burger was delicious!!! And presented fantastically on a piece of slate as a plate. The final member of our party had the fish platter, which looked delicious and had a huge doorstep piece of granary bread, calamari, prawns in Marie rose sauce and a piece of smoked mackerel. He said it was gorgeous!! We were so pleasantly surprised by the experience that I had to come on here and write a review! The spot is lovely, and they have rooms too which would be perfect for people on walking holidays. The meal cost £58 including drinks (2 pints, and 3 soft drinks) for 4 adults and a child which in my opinion really isn't bad at all! If I am ever in the area again, I would definitely eat here again! Highly recommended!!! :)

This is a top notch pub. Choice and quality of beers and spirits is first class. Food menu is varied and delicious. Nothing is too much trouble for the ever helpful fantastic staff. If you visit The Lakes, you must visit The Outgate Inn.

We stayed 2 nights here last week. It was lovely the rooms are simple but clean and comfortable . The food was amazing, the breakfasts very tasty ,very well cooked and huge ,we certainly didn't need to eat again all day a perfect start to a full days walking and exploring. We chose to eat there both evenings as the atmosphere is so homely and we could relax with a few drinks in front of the open fire a real treat for weary walkers . The meals were excellent especially the Cajun chicken burger which came with chunky chips and a huge onion ring . We will definatly return as soon as we can .

A bracing walk 'cross country from Hawkshead Campsite lead us to the Outgate ~ helful staff, a couple of good real ales and the people next to us urged us to come back for food! So we did. Booked the night after ~ I had a veggie burger and my partner wanted salmon (which was off) and so had Veggie Lasgne. We also took a side of onion rings. The food was excellent and the ORs were superb. A lively bar on a weekend ~ we'll be back here!

Great meal last night for our daughter's birthday. Always getting customers in our tea room at Betty Fold asking where to eat locally. Will have no hesitation about recommending The Outgate

Just back from here after a really good meal. Proper steak and ale pie (no daft exploding puff pastry lid!). Nice and relaxed.

Had dinner last night. 😎 The Sloppy Joe Burger was the best I have ever had. The photos on the site do not do it justice. Chef, that was fantastic. Hats off. Little bread, but beautiful. Burger to die for. Excellent Stuff. The pub wasn’t bad either!!!🙄Many thanks

Food was really lovely from the main to the desserts. All our party enjoyed what was served. Decor was beautiful. Servers were brilliant and friendly. After the trouble we had last night to get food from the red lion. We were not disappointed. Would definitely recommend. And a massive Thumbs up for me!!

Been here several times over the last year and the food has always been consistently very good. Tasty & generous Sunday roasts too. Good sized beer garden out the back. Friendly staff, well kept beer and great service all round. Well done!

We popped in for some food last night and it was excellent, there was a shortened menu but plenty to choose from. The buttermilk chicken was delicious and so was the sticky toffee pudding. The locals were very friendly and welcoming.

Lovely little pub in a beautiful location. Food took a long time to come out, and miraculously appeared as soon as we enquired but these things happen. Would definitely go back! The history information inside was also fascinating.

Warm and friendly atmosphere. When we went there was live music on from a talented American keyboard player (never seen that before in any of the countryside pubs in the lakes). Good selection of beer and food. Be aware, their Sunday menu is different from the one listed on their website that lists pizza (could be a weekday thing?). I'd recommend this place

Fantastic friendly pub. Even the locals are all welcoming. And the food is exceptional, can’t ask for much more than that really. Keep up the good work and keep serving the great beer 👌👌👌

Haven't been for a while but the lack of evening food options in Hawkshead now meant we ended up here, and very glad we did. Food was absolutely spot on, with a great selection of burgers and pizzas. Family and dog friendly, it's definitely a place we'll come back to sooner rather than later.

Fantastic food and fantastic staff. We had Outgate Inn recommended to us and it did not disappoint. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. One to keep an eye on, the chef likes to use a pesto dressing which has nuts in. But the staff and the chef was very flexible and we had a lovely meal. The sticky toffee pudding was particularly good. Would definitely go again.

Really warm, friendly, welcoming pub — very classic cosy traditional pub vibe round the main bar area, with an adjacent dining area and beer garden. I went twice — once for lunch and once for dinner — and both meals were top notch. The menu had a really great selection of options — our party of 6 tried all sorts of things across it and everything from the sandwiches to the sea bass risotto to the pizza to the pork ribs was excellent. The staff are also all lovely and friendly which makes such a difference. I will definitely be going back to Outgate Inn!

Just returned from a weekend stay in Outgate. Visited this place twice for evening meal. Thoroughly enjoyed both occasions . Service with a smile, relaxed atmosphere, great food. If you are staying in Hawkeshead, I'd recommend the short trip up the road.

Nice little family and dog friendly pub which sells light lunches. I had a roast pork with crackling and stuffing sandwich which was fully loaded and came with a side of fries and gravy. We found the staff to be friendly and polite and the beer was spot on.

Went for a meal yesterday was (our 2nd visit.) Food was lovely, cosy surroundings and the locals very welcoming. A local chap called Paul was so friendly. Would definitely recommend. Beef roast was scrumptious and pheasant burger my husband said was lovely. Worth a visit we will 100% be back. Keep up the good work everyone :)
