Servicing the Premier Inn it is adjacent to, the Balkerne is a busy pub with lots of workers using the place. The menu reflects the changing times for example you now have to pay 49p for a naan bread where it used to be included in the meal. The menu and beer/lager options are all decent and the staff are really excellent.

We enjoyed a mid afternoon sharing platter this afternoon. Service a bit slower than usual, used plates needed clearing away, suggesting staff a bit thin on the ground, but food was served promptly and was tasty..

Firstly, the wings are incredible. Proper home made mother's here. Get them with the sauce on the side... You know what? I was going to knock a star off because of the size of my gammon, but thinking about it, I think they got it just right. It looked tiny on my plate, but it really was just enough. Fair play, portion guys! Marked down for a long wait for the coffee machine at breakfast, plus that holiday bloody toaster.

Be arrived about 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Ordered coffee. Then we ordered some drinks and then we ordered food. Coffee came out then we ordered drinks. The food came out and she was so busy. She'd forgot drinks but she soon sorted them out for us ,not a problem. Food was good. I had chicken and bacon with BBQ sauce with chips. My partner had pi, mashed potato, peas. We asked for chips instead of mashed potato and they changed it straight away. Very good service. Food was lovely. The waitress looked after us really well. We were there till 4:00. It was a good afternoon. If your ever on your way to Colchester and you want to quit bite to eat, popping to see the staff,x

Better than the Bowling Green at Weeley where the carpet is filthy. More wood at Balkerne Gate. Service a bit slow. Had to wait longer for one member of our six starters. Had to remind staff. Other than that a good meal at a reasonable price

Overall nice meal, not busy for a Saturday and had about three different waitresses but they were nice enough. Had the mixed grill and steak was actually cooked nicely which is rare on a mixed grill. Would recommend.

Polite staff and a clean and comfortable dining experience. Food was nothing special - just the average 'pub grub' so have rated it 5 stars as wasn't expecting anything otherwise. There was just something 'missing' from my overall experience of the Balkerne Gate but I can't quite put my finger on it. Lacklustre atmosphere?....perhaps.

I popped into this pub for lunch whilst my car was being serviced at a nearby dealer. Excellent service from the staff, extremely attentive and well presented. Jade (waiting staff) was pleasant and a credit to the establishment. I had the mixed grill which was nice, one piece of steak was better than the other, but it was cook to my request. Generally a nice place for a bite to eat and a drink.

I had a dinner here with family, looking for somewhere quiet and some choices. It's not especially special, but did provide some options for vegans. I had the mini pie trio and it was good, especially the curry one and the lamb and mint one. The servers were friendly, but the menu cannot be altered in anyway. Also, the bar server had never heard of putting Lea Perrin's/Worcestershire sauce in tomato juice! The beer selection was minimal, but I did find a nice pale ale. We'd go again as it fits for varied groups and was pretty quiet.
