We were one of the first customers opening night, and thrilled to be so. As a native Californian living in the UK, it is difficult to get authentic mexican food. But Shaun and his team deliver. I must confess I was a fan of their food when they had a humble taco truck we stumbled on 3 years ago now. The food took me back to my childhood and the team were always so friendly. It was no surprise when they were runner ups in the national street food competition. Well deserved. They had tried a small taco stand in the Yards and it was worth going for. But I yearned for a proper restaurant. Tonight our dreams came true. Sonora Mexican Kitchen opened at 6am and we were the first customers through the door. And we were so glad of it! A warm welcome as if we were old friends. We were seated and had some lovely mexican pork scratchings of sort. My wife had a lovely Rumchata cocktail with fresh cinnamon and I had a lovely frozen margarita with a spice rub rather than just salt, nice touch. Shaun, the owner explained the food comes out when ready. This is the traditional mexican way, it makes sure it is fresh. The tortilla chips were freshly made with an amazing homemade guacamole. This is a portent of the food. Everything is fresh! My wife had the sublime chicken nachos with pico de gallo and I had a beef barbacoa burrito with rice, black beans, pineapple and pico de gallo. It was fantastic. Friendly service and my wife tried a hibiscus cocktail that is Shaun's own recipe. I was a designated driver, so I opted for a Jarrito mexican cola. Sugar cane goodness....mmmmm. We then shared some churros, chocolate and ice cream for dessert. They were perfect. Crisp and fluffy, but not too greasy. Great ratio of cinnamon and sugar. The decor is lovely, a mix of art nouveau and modernista mexican light fixtures and tiles. Not the cliche decor, but quite authentic. There seemed to be 24 covers on the ground floor. Upstairs is the not yet open Frida Callo room for private parties, it is lovely with an enclosed balcony. The team were awesome as always and seeing Shaun's mum and dad (also working) is also a joy, as well as the kitchen staff who have worked the truck. It was a wonderful family setting and I really hope they do well. The menu is moderately priced with good portion sizes, great service, and a clean, lively atmosphere. My fav restaurant in the Kettering area now and one of my faves in the Midlands as a whole. Try it out I suspect you will need to book, as it is so good.
There was an amazing mexican food truck in Kettering that I have been missing. I found out it has been upgraded to this brilliant restaurant. The food is slow cooked overnight, delicious and served by brilliant staff. It’s a family run business and They regularly cook and provide for the homeless.
Had their burrito back when it was in The Yards and was very upset to see it was gone, but then I saw they were opening this shop and I'm so happy. Amazing food, well priced, and HUGE burritos if you have a big appetite.
