Considering I didn't get a chance to actually hang out at the cafe, I definitely can't say too much (even though it looks incredible and a great place to spend a morning / afternoon), but I had asked a local colleague 'Where can I find the best cup of coffee in Leeds?'. Without hesitation, he told me to look no further than Laynes - and I'm glad I didn't! Just a very simple yet tasty Long Black that was so good I wish I had a chance to eat there as well. Will most definitely be back my next time in Leeds.
Work had arranged a team meeting at the Leeds office so just like anyone else, I googled the best coffee shops in Leeds. After creating a shortlist, Laynes Espresso came out top, mainly because of its close proximity to the train station and its location being en route to the office without having to take a detour. Currently there are some road works going on outside but don’t let that put you off from trying this place. The gloominess of the morning was mirrored by the greeting by someone who didn’t seem like they were having the best of days but regardless they seated me to a table and also directed me to the toilets which I had to use from excessively hydrating myself on the two hour train journey. I went in with the thought of ordering a croissant or the sort, from what seemed to be a freshly baked selection, however I saw some eggs on toast on the menu. The waitress, who served me, was slightly a happier one and she advised it will only take 5 minutes to make to serve my time constrained agenda. I gave in and ordered that along with my usual flat white. The order did arrive pretty quickly, unlike my train, and the food itself was quite nice. Personally I could do with a bit more flavour in the eggs but maybe I should have used my initiative and dashed some more pepper on them. Nevertheless due to my urgency to get to the meeting, I just swallowed them at pace and tried to savour the taste. The flat white was really good and the barista avoided any frothiness that some amateurs are guilty of. My palate took well to the flavours of the beans and the correct texture of the caffeinated drink. A post meeting pit stop was thwarted by their early 3pm closing time but despite this minor setback, I would definitely recommend this place if you enjoy a proper cup of coffee and/or with a side of an array of brunch dishes.
Fun little shop. Proper espresso drinks, quality (yet pricey) baked goods, and great service. A great first stop upon stepping off the train.
