Review Sous Le Nez - Leeds

Andrew Booth
Pretty hidden restaurant located under Quebec's hotel but definitely worth a visit. We ate on a Friday lunchtime and expected to eat from the set menu we'd seen online but unusually they only offer this in the evening. They do have a bar menu for lunch but we opted for the main menu and the food was delicious. Highlights were the french onion soup & Fillet steak gateaux, not the cheapest but absolutely delicious. The staff are very friendly and the service was excellent with a good recommendation from the extensive wine list from our friendly waiter. We will definitely be back.

My partner and I visited for the first time. It was really lovely. Welcoming and attentive without being intrusive and delicious food. My partner chose pork and I had lamb and we ordered the dauphinois potatoes and broccoli to go with. We shared the moules mariniere to start- glad we did as our mains were so filling! A really enjoyable evening.

Probably the best place to eat in Leeds. It might not be the most elevated food, but that's not what Sous Le Nez is about. It's always delicious, and the service is always impeccable. They have the most comprehensive wine list north of London in my opinion. A proper French bistro that delivers time and time again. A remarkable dining experience that I will continue returning to, should I be so lucky!

Really good relaxed French eatery in a cellar bar. When we walked in we were given a hearty welcome, offered a drink in the bar before we sat down, and then shown to our table. The menu was really good and we all had difficulty choosing from great options. The wine list was large and varied. The food was ace, especially the duck! Save room for pudding!

A nice restaurant with good menu choices however it is very tightly packed and extremely busy making it overly warm and a loud atmosphere. The staff are excellent and do an amazing job in such a tight space.

Fantastic food. Great service. Had the soup, brie, duck, pork duo and dorphenois. All absolutely top-notch. Flavour on another level. You won't be disappointed.

Devine experience 😁😁 Probably the best meal we've eaten this year and we had the early bird menu. I had a superb fishcake for starters really meaty with fish and a gorgeous pea shoot accompaniment. Main was rump steak and chips plus veg for the table. We'll cooked and cracking chips and the best peppercorn sauce I've ever tasted. Finally the best bit an incredible white chocolate dessert with honeycomb. Had I been at home I'd have licked every plate clean. Just £36 for the food. Incredible value in this lovely setting 2 minutes from the train station. My wife and friend also raves about their selections.

We had lunch here and it was outstanding! Warm welcome on arrival, drinks served quickly , our dining choices were soooooo good, the black pudding starter and duo of pork were off the scale in terms of flavour and presented beautifully. ( the other dishes very good too ) I doff my cap to the chefs for smashing it !! The waiters and waitresses couldn't have been more friendly and attentive so thanks for making a super lunch even better. Would rate as 6☆ if I could. Will certainly return and highly recommend you give it a try.

Absolutely stunning. Was really pleased to finally visit this place. They reopened the restaurant on 16th June so I thought it would be chaotic but everything was perfect. I couldn't fault the service, the food, the staff or the restaurant. Would definitely visit again. Set menu was good value (3 courses + wine for £32, no wine for £26). A lot of choice and everything was delicious.

Very delicious and worth visiting for either lunch of dinner when you’re in Leeds! The staff was very friendly and the service was impeccable. Recommend the Tempura Prawns or Fried Brie for your starter. You won’t regret it! The risotto was delicious as well!

First visit here won't be our last. Food was beautiful, lovely presentation, lots of choice. Belly pork was amazing, sticky toffee pudding to die for. Service was very good and all staff were friendly yet professional. It is a hidden gem wasn't easy to find as we not from Leeds but glad we did .

Visited 11/11/17 with a group of friends (all foodies) the early bird set menu was good value with the 1/2 bottle of wine. Service was swift & attentive as required when the crowd & conversation are the focal point. 17 years since a few of us had visited - seemed less formal more relaxed - lovely evening

Nice atmosphere in a basement, although steps outside were a bit dodgy in the rain! Food was lovely - I really enjoyed my cod in chowder. And it has to be the best wine list I've seen in a while, with plenty offered by the glass to choose from! If it weren't so far away, I'd be happy to return with friends :-)

Still the best restaurant in Leeds. Always consistently delicious food served by attentive staff. Superb menu and wine list. Highly recommended.

Really nice atmosphere, and great service. Food was good, perhaps seafood could have been a bit better, but all in all a great meal.

I ate here on my own this week and was instantly made to feel very welcome. The 3 course early bird special with half bottle of wine was perfect. I had a warm chilli chicken salad, followed by pigeon, which was so flavoursome. Finished off with toffee cheesecake with honeycomb and blood orange gel. The house red was very quaffable too! I will return again on my next visit to Leeds.

An incredibly rude and insulting waiter said he "Found it hard to believe" I had not been told there was a fixed menu when I had telephoned to reserve a table for Valentines' evening. He repeatedly said everyone WAS told in a very patronising manner. Not only was he wrong on this issue but he then added a spurious £10 to our bill when we asked to split it into 2 payments. It seems I am the only one able to pay attention to detail. The very fact that my friend has specific dietary needs is why I can be sure I was not told there was a set menu. I would have wanted to check it's suitability before I went ahead and paid a rather hefty £40 deposit. Not satisfied with insinuating I was a liar he then challenged why I hadn't checked the website to view the menu. It was the waiters view that all customers must do this and it was a failing on my part not theirs, that I had not self-appraised myself of the set menu. Since none of the starters were suitable for my friend owing to her condition, we asked if we could order just a main course from the set menu and forego starters and desert. After consulting the Manager and further sneering at us we were allowed to order a steak and a fish main dish. We were charged an additional £3.50 for a measly portion of frozen fries served in a desert bowl and the same size portion of green veg charged at £3.75. The set menu for 3 courses was £85 per couple with fries and vegetables included in the price. Guess what we paid for our main meals plus 2 glasses of wine and 2 G&T's? ......they took £80.45. Disgraceful service. Steer clear of this overpriced, ego-driven basement of bad manners. We shall. I don't pay £80 for a night of insults and sneering followed by an effort to blatantly overcharge by £10. Shame on you Souslenez.

We came for the early bird menu - 3 courses plus 1/2 a bottle of house wine each for around £29pp. Excellent value! All our food was delicious - good quality ingredients, prepared and cooked well and served attractively. A lovely venue buzzing with people last night (Saturday). Staff are all friendly, helpful and efficient.

Been eating here occasionally since the early 70's, when it was Le Quebec. Still top-notch, and a restaurant i would recommend without hestation. The 'house' red that we shared last evening was sublime. The food and the service impeccable, as ever.

Food was excellent wine list is endless - some of the waiting staff are short of personality but wouldn't put us off going again.

Lovely atmosphere, great food

So pleased we’d booked this in advance as it appeared to be fully booked. Busy and noisy Saturday night, good atmosphere, delicious food, pork two ways and monkfish for mains, bread & butter pudding ( made with croissant) for dessert, massive wine list, good service, loved it! Would recommend and return.

Great staff and a reliable institution we've been to for years but after recently turning vegetarian the hazelnut pastry left a lot to be desired. Won't stop me trying again next time I'm in Leeds of course but please take another look at that guys!

Had the Boeuf Bourguignon with broccoli and potato...simple but very tasty. Extensive Wine List and great service! A little tricky to find on first visit!

I had the lamb here and it was amazingly succulent, the waiter was very attentive while the wine selection was excellent.
