Best known as Kitty's Showbar. If you want a laugh, this is where you need to go. Lovely owner and good prices.

A community pub with a fantastic atmosphere and some amazing entertainment. The entertainment includes live cabaret, disco and Karaoke nights. The venue also serves great food and an amazing Sunday lunch. With friendly and helpful staff The Monro is a must visit venue.

A really lovely Sunday roast, with three courses making it great value.
The staff and the service given by them was faultless. I have returned
home prepared to recommend to everybody.
Thank you for a lovely afternoon xx

Last week we had the amazing Ken O'Flaherty over on holiday from Australia. Ken is a brilliant Liverpoodlin musician. James Monro set up a gig which was excellent. Atmosphere was electric, musicians were brilliant and the crowd were very appreciative. Our Hosts took great care of us all. Overall had a great evening.

Went here the first time the other weekend, was a bit apprehensive at first as it wasn’t my usual haunt. I’m an old school boy, Masquerade, Gbar, Curzon, Lisbon, Pacos, Escape... before I moved down south... 😕Most of these great venues are either now gone, or no longer the same, with new owners or brand new bars.
But this place has kept the old spirit, the friendliness of the scene as it used to be, and good old entertainment. I hope it grows and does well, and next time I’m back, I’ll pop by,
One word of warning though...if I get called the Honey Monster as Im walking out again though, I’m gonna take a dump on that Kitty Litter! 🤣

Popped in last week for a quick working lunch with the other half... Very reasonably priced... Barman (think might of been the owner?) was very friendly.. Its just missing more customers really but im sure the word will get around :)

Just the weather?. Three of us went for lunch on a Saturday, A birthday celebration really,so the only time we could get together. The food was good, the service excellent and the venue quaint. It should have been a dining experience and it wasn't, why. It was cold, very cold, the place I mean. I know that we've just had a very cold snap but it spoiled our lunch. No use complaining 'cos the staff were obviously cold as well. Such a shame a restaurant cannot exist on summer trade alone!

Fast food. Went to The James Monroe on fathers day. Place nicely decorated and food was great. However I did have an issue.
We booked a table for three adults a toddler and a baby, for two o'clock. We had the two course meal and all was going fine. At about 3:30 the staff asked if we required anything else we declined and my partner continued to feed the baby her bottle. At 3:40 we were politely asked to vacate the table as they had another booking at 4:00.
1/ They said they were family friendly when we booked so how long do they think is reasonable to feed yourself then your children

What a disgrace do not go here. I went for a meal here on a Thursday night.

As a chef I can certainly pick up on the shortcuts used by people and there where certainly a few here.

I ordered the sausage and mash. The sausages were coated in cracked black pepper and they had been microwaved to be re-heated. So had the mash and it said it was served with a jus but it was packet gravy.

When we left the pub i was looking for the chefs horse outside as I think they are cowboys.

Best Gastro In Liverpool. After reading some of the views posted here I was sceptical about my visit to the James Monro. However I was pleasantly suprised by how excellent the food was and how brilliant the staff were. I will be returning hopefully on a regular basis and would encourage others to as well. This kind of venue is a dying breed of original, different places where the place and staff have character. I would encourage people to get behind venue's like this one as if we dont we will end up left with terrible chain pubs like mitchell and butler and wetherspoons!!!! I am very disappointed by other reviews here giving this venue a bad image and have come to the conclusion that obviously this venue attracts the odd pretentious crank. I however will be returning and hope to see you guys there too enjoying the craic!!!

Not good. 5 of us arrived @ 7.40. Meal booked for 8. Main man asked @ 7.55 if we would mind waiting 15/20 mins. Ok no problem. Sat down @ 8.30. We had checked the menu online, so knew what we wanted. Given menus. Starters ordered ok, mains.....oh dear. No steak, no shin of beef. So that was 4 of us who had to think again. It woud have been nice to have been told, but hey.
The wannabe steak&shin of beef people were offered pork stew! (where did that come from?),, Anyway 2 went for this, 2 for pork rib eye with duck egg and 1 sausage & mash.
Starters - Caesar salad not much, thrown together, not as good as any boxed salad from Asda. Same goes for the confit chicken. Fish terrine passable.
Mains - Pork ribeye - tasteless. sausage&mash -sausage ok, mash lumpy. Pork stew - Dry, bland , claggy and it was served in a ramekin! Isn't a stew supposed to be on a plate?
Anyway, the dessert came to the rescue in some way. Sticky toffee pudding, creme brulee and the cheeseboard. Then again, maybe it was because they were on the house due to the time we waited to be seated.
Service was good, however, when I asked him why the steak and the shin of beef was off the menu, he said it was because the chef did not like what the supplier had delivered and was not willing to serve it to his customers. Hmm, now then, when we walked in, steaks were being served. All seems a bit dodgy, but I'll let you make your own minds up.
Food cost £90, total with 3 bottles of red and a round of drinks came to £144 for 5 of us. All in all, A tad disappointing. won't be back there in a hurry.

Rude and unpleasant. We had booked a table for the night before our wedding for our friends and family but had to cancel due to a rather unpleasant experience 3 weeks before. My fiancé had made a booking for 20 people for his stag party lunch the same time as the pre-wedding dinner. Although the venue was quiet, they were asked to leave in a rather rude manner after a few hours there, and told to go to Mathew st or concert sq which would be better suited for them. The manager obviously assumed my none-scouce fiancé was not from Liverpool, though he and most of the group have lived here for at least 10 years and would not go to these places anyway. Considering no trouble was caused and several hundred pounds would have gone behind the bar, are businesses really that well off at the moment to turn business away in such an unceremonious manner? We think not. And we won't be returning for our pre wedding meal.

Rubbish. This pub restaurant is not up to standard and should be investigated by the food standards agency as it would not pass a health and hygiene certificate. The female waitresses are lethargic and the management whould pull their socks up and employ a new manager with expetrience of the industry.
Phil
Nothing special. Just bog standard fare. Mediocre food neither very good or very bad. Only not a lot of it which could be good or bad depending on how you're feeling.

Excelent!!!. Never heard this place before so we weren't sure what to expect. The menu was very good, plenty of choices for everyone of our group. We hadn't booked and we were lucky that we found a table (we were 8 of us). The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing. I had grilled tuna steak and it was cooked to perfection. Everyone loved it and we'll go back again. 10/10

Never Again!. I went with Jose (who also left a comment!) last night. Had been looking forward to visiting The James Monro for some time, as The Monro is always a pleasure to visit, for either food or drink or both! All I can say is what a let down, the steak very disappointing, it was cold. If we hadn't gone when there was an offer we would have paid £40 for 2,cold, below average steaks. I do not mind paying for a decent meal, but last night was dreadful. We had invited friends to join us for the meal, luckily for them they could not make it! I will definitely visit The Monro (Duke St, as a gastropub should be!) again but will never go to The James Monro again.

Basic. Went there last night for the 2 4 1 offer on T Bone steaks, Ordered them rare and they arrived almost cold. Wanted to send them back but was more interested in getting out of there as a couple of people decided to sit right next to our table about an inch away from our food. Got there at 7.30pm had ordered eaten and was out by 8.05pm, that says it all. Never Again! Have had better in Wetherspoons!
