A group of three of us attending on Saturday night. We arrived just before 7 and the place was already very busy.
With some guidance from the waitress, we ordered the sharing platter plus an extra dish. The food came fairly quickly and was delicious. I would say the food was slightly hotter than other Ethiopian's I've had (despite the waitress's advice that our choices were mild/medium) but this suited me well. If you are not keen on spice, err on the side of caution when ordering.
More enjera was brought out to us when the waitress noted ours was running low - they are very attentive despite being very busy.
I would definitely come back as found every dish I tried to be delicious.
You might find you have to wait to be seated as the staff are so keen to seat everybody that comes in. It was also a little chilly (although it was an unusually cold evening) so bring a jumper if you feel the cold!
Good value and credit cards accepted.
I've had Ethiopian food in about a dozen restaurants in half a dozen cities around the world, and our dinner last night was the best Ethiopian meal I've ever had. We got the surprise combination platter for two and it was more than enough food for two very hungry people. The owner was friendly and service was efficient. As an added bonus, everything was reasonably priced. We're already planning a return visit even though we leave nowhere close. Thanks, and see you again soon!
This was my first time experience with Ethopian food and I must say I wasn't disappointed. The food portions are small but you can always order extra injera for free. I loved their lentils wot and chicken. Everything tasted good. Definitely recommend to try this place if trying for some exotic ethopian flavor.
I visited Zeret for the first time with colleagues few month back. They hadn't had Ethiopian food before and I thought I'd introduce them to the food of my ancestors.
I've been to a few Ethiopian restaurants in London in my time and was curious to see how Zeret would compete, being located in a secluded corner of Camberwell near a housing estate.
I can speak Amharic so the owner was delighted when we walked in and I greeted her in her native tongue. We were seated at a table and ordered some drinks and Ketegna- a freshly baked spicy bread cut into pizza-shaped slices. These went down a treat with my colleagues.
We then ordered two "Zeret Surprises" a combination of tibs (lamb) kitfo (raw beef), chicken, lentils salad- all served on Injera, a traditional sour-bread pancake with a spongy texture. If you're not sure what to order from the menu, I'd recommend ordering this, since it has a bit of everything. I've experienced restaurants where the injera is almost inedible- usually from Eritrean joints- but this was perfect.
The service was excellent and you couldn't get better Ethiopian food unless you trekked to East Africa itself. All my colleagues loved the food and were surprised at how great value it was. I'll be making a return visit!
We have been at Zeret kitchen for a business dinner with our project group of 20 people. The staff made the perfect arrangements and when we arrived everything was perfect. It was kind of a place where you immediately feel comfortable. The dinner was great. The highlight was the cappuccino we ordered at the end. We are definitely booking this place for any future events.
My partner and I recently visited Zeret Kitchen in Camberwell SE5.The food was amazing & so was the owner ! We had a mixed platter for two - as advised by the owner - which was exceptional value for money and one of the most amazing dining experiences we have ever had.We also had to order the honey wine as we had read so many great reviews recommending it.The reviews were right ! If you can overlook the location (and not be a postcode snob) you will have a meal to remember. Highly recommended.
Ignore the location, go for the food. Noticed this place was close-ish to where I'm living, so decided to give it a try. It's probably a bit out of the way for most people, but if you're in the mood for some Ethiopian it's really not that hard to get to - just get the bus from Elephant and Castle. It's in a dingy looking council block, but inside the atmosphere is fine.
I found it had been described as both an Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant - which doesn't really make much of a difference as the two countries are next to each other and the cuisine is very similar.
Like the others here, I opted for the £16 platter for two (luckily I had a dining companion with me!) There was a good mix of vegetables and meat, and we were both very full and couldn't finish all of the injera (flat bread). The food was delicious, and will be cooked according to your spice preference. I like spicy food but my dining companion didn't, so I was able to get some chilli on the side!
The staff here are lovely and accommodating and will always explain dishes to those unfamiliar with the cuisine. They apparently also run a cafe next-door (which is now part of the same restaurant) during the day...
Really good little restaurant. This place is a great little restaurant. It and the English style cafe next door are actually the same business - I think that the Ethiopian family that owned it bought the cafe, and then later expanded into selling their traditional cuisine. In any event, the food is good - lots of choices of beef, chicken, lamb, and vegetarian options on injera bread, the prices are reasonable - two people can eat there for £20 including drinks without much trouble - and the staff are extremely warm and friendly.
YUM!. I love this place...wonderful sweet and sincere service and delicious food...the best Ethiopian/Eritrean food I have had in London. It's cozy and intimate and the portions are beyond generous. 10/10
Zeret Kitchen might be the best ethiopian restaurant in south london. Despite the slightly unsalubrious location the food is superb and the service is personal and warm. I have been going there quite often for the last couple of years and haven't had anything but delicious and satsfying meals. Also, the bill is always inexplicably cheap, I hope they won't go out of business!
Food: It was our first foray into Ethiopian cuisine and me and my friend both felt that it made a solid impression on us. The starter bread was also really good and it was a good spice level. Unfortunately, after finishing the bread and having the platter, my dinner guest ended up feeling a bit sick but we couldn't pinpoint the reason.
Service: The waitresses there very attentive and good at their jobs! They seated us where we wanted to be as well which was a big plus!
Atmosphere: Really good atmosphere overall! Everyone looked like they were having a wonderful experience!
This place is genuinely amazing. Tafi and her staff make sure you have an excellent time and explain everything perfectly. The food was unreal, so flavourful, would 100% recommend trying this restaurant out especially if you haven't tried Ethiopian food. Their Ethiopian spiced tea is also amazing and a nice end to a beautiful meal
In the heart of Camberwell, where time slows to the rhythm of tradition, the DKB found themselves at an Ethiopian restaurant that beckoned with promises of culinary delight. The air was thick with the rich, intoxicating aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, their smoky tendrils weaving tales of distant lands. As we entered, we were embraced by the warm hospitality of the staff, whose smiles were as genuine as the flavours they served. They guided us to a table adorned with vibrant, handwoven fabrics, a testament to their heritage. The traditional food arrived, a symphony of colours and textures on a communal platter, an invitation to share and savour. With injera as our guide, we embarked on a culinary journey, each bite a tribute to a culture steeped in history.
In that moment, under the ethereal glow of the restaurant's warm candlelight, we felt not just as guests, but a part of a larger tapestry of tradition and kindness that spanned over 1400 years of history to the footsteps of those first blessed Muslims that found sanctuary in the lands of ancient Ethiopia.
This spot is a real hidden gem. It was my first time having Ethiopian food and it didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious and eating with our hands was a cool new experience. I’d definitely recommend trying the honey wine, you could easily drink the bottle!
Best and the only best Ethiopian cuisine I have ever.
The starter Kategna sparks up your appetite. And the recommendation is the Zeret surprise. The dish contains everything you need.
fluffy and sour enjera fill up your stomach and you will never go back home with hunger. The service is so good and I will definitely come again.
First visit to this little gem near my house, I was hoping for some tasty vegan scran and it did not disappoint, incredible food at a budget cost, with great service! Will be returning soon
Zeret Kitchen is a delight! The staff are attentive, so friendly and helpful. They were kind enough to tell us how best to eat the items and accommodating to different spice levels.
The food itself was delicious, reasonably priced and so filling. Would recommend the kartegna (it's an injera bread starter that is slightly spiced), the Ethiopian spicy tea (reminiscent of an Indian masala chai without milk) and the sharing platter. Note that you eat from one plate and use your hands so would recommend to lean into the experience! We can't wait to go back.
Don't let the slightly dingy building that it is in put you off - this place is utterly charming, the staff were lovely, the interior is cozy (loved the fresh flowers) and very clean.
If you've never eaten Ethiopian food before, don't worry you will get all the help you need from the amazing staff.
The menu is quite short (that's a good thing) and sensibly priced. We had no real idea what to order but got all the help we needed.
Oh, and the most important bit... The food was totally delish!
Cozy restaurant, friendly staff, Delicious food, good customer service and small selection of good white wine. I had Gomen besiga which was diced lamb with flavoured butter spinach and my friends had the shared platter. It was all good. We throughly enjoyed it. Ethiopian honey white wine was delightful if you are a fan of sweet wine. The lady who I think is the owner was very kind and made us feel very welcome. They didn’t rush us to order or eat. It is a fantastic place to have a taste of home made food and chilling with friends. Not noisy, no loud music or sharp lights. Everything is made for a relaxing night out.
Zeret kitchen is a delicious authentic Ethiopian restaurant serving the local community and beyond (!). The curries are fresh and mouthwateringly tasty. Zeret has a relaxing family vibe and is the perfect place for a summer meal with outdoor seating. The menu is perfect for vegans/veggies and meat eaters alike! The staff are so kind and the service is excellent. Thank you for a lovely evening - we will be sure to return very soon! I would highly recommend this restaurant.
