Review The Ritz Restaurant - London

Ayse Kaya
This place was everything and more than we wished for. Since we stepped into the restaurant we were welcomed with great warmth. The service, food and the entertainment was top notch! We had lovely Davide, Alina and Luca looking after us and making us feel special. We visited The Ritz Restaurant due to a celebration and we we presented with a celebratory cake at the end of our night which even made our evening extra special. The entertainment started with a piano performance followed up by a lovely male singer whom had a soothing voice that you could sit down and listen all night long. We would like to thank you for making our day an unforgettable and splendid experience.

Exceptional. The hotel is so cosy and beautifully decorated, cocktails in the bar were very nice (although service was a tad slow as very busy), and the food was perfect. Pianist and singer came out about 7.30 which was also great. We had the Beef Wellington for 2 which was cooked beautifully and cut at the table, couldn't fault it. Obviously the whole thing was a tad pricey, but for the next special occasion I'll be heading back with no doubt.

Absolutely magical experience at the ritz dining room. Having dined there before I strongly recommend you DONT take the tasting menu, as all the fun stuff (crepes Suzette flambéed at the table, beef wellington etc) is not part of even the 7 course tasting. Service wasn’t flawless but was very very good, absolutely loved the langoustine and beef wellington (it’s too big to finish). Crepes Suzette is a MUST order for dessert, and they even gave us complimentary birthday cakes. The room is stunning, and the crowd is very mixed. Remember there is a dress code for gentlemen. Perfect for a special occasion, would absolutely return.

Truly a 5* experience all around. Langoustine and Wellington were superb. Our sommelier William was excellent and helpful. Appreciate the privacy and consideration as well.

Perfect. Visited for afternoon Tea and couldn’t recommend enough. The service was unmatched and the food & atmosphere was impeccable. Although arriving late due to traffic issues- upon arrival, any stress disappeared. There was a large selection of sandwiches, cakes, & teas which were all delicious.

We started off the evening in the bar to sample one of their speciality cocktails but it was a bit rushed and we didn’t get any accompaniments such as olives. The dining room looked lovely and the waiters and sommelier were very friendly. We both opted for the a la carte menu and chose the Dorset crab starter with almond soup, apple and fennel and a crispy tuile on top. It was accompanied by a little tart. While we waited we got an amuse bouche of little stuffed delicacies and bread and butter. All delicious. The presentation of the starter and how it was served to us by our waiters Oliver and his colleague was beautiful. The course was so tasty. We then chose the sea bass and stuffed courgette as our main course which turned out to be quite substantial. The fish was cooked to perfection in terms of it melting in your mouth but was a bit too peppery for me. In fact I would have said the main dish was a fraction too highly seasoned which overpowered the flavours of the fish and accompanying courgette. There was a little delicacy stuffed with crab too which was my favourite bit. However my husband loved the whole dish. For dessert I chose the chocolate soufflé with vanilla chantilly cream. Wow! It was one of the best soufflés I have ever had. Soufflés are my go to dessert if on the menu so I’ve had quite a lot! My husband opted for the strawberry dessert which was another exceptional course both in terms of presentation and taste. Finally there were petit fours - all lovely. We had chosen a great accompanying wine. However as so often is the case the serving of the wine and water started out well but as the restaurant got busier we had to wait more and more for replenishments. A bit disappointing in a restaurant that prides itself on its service and charges enough! As regards the atmosphere - again it started out well. The piano player was good and not too loud but the second half of our dining experience was rather spoilt by the discordant and very loud singing of the soloist. Her song choice was less of a problem than the key she was ‘singing’ in. We weren’t the only ones to complain about the level of noise being emitted. We were told she was not a regular singer used by the restaurant. Overall I would say it was a reasonably pleasant experience but once the restaurant got busy everything became a little frenetic.

Excellent meal and service, food of the highest standard. As good as anything in London currently. Pidgin and Turbot dishes were amazing

Everything of the top notch quality! First of all, the interior os stunning. It’s truly unique and beautiful. You don’t get to see too many places with such tradition, it simply looks and feels royal. So you immediately feel special. The food is classic and super tasty. Have something like lobster or crab, so you make it even more festive. For the main, do take Beef Wellington as it will be served with a ceremony and you will not regret it. It is the perfect Beef Wellington so you will always have one to compare with, for all your BWs in your life. And then, finish with chocolate soufflé. Mastership of desserts. Definitely worth looking at the wine list, have a glass of champagne. The service is super nice and they will let you feel special. I had meals at different 3 Michelin star restaurants, but they were nowhere close to the experience at Ritz. The spirit of Escoffier is still around.

We celebrated my mothers 80th Birthday on Saturday. It was a fabulous occasion made all the more special by this remarkable venue, its staff from the moment we set foot on the steps right through the evening of dining and dancing. Special thanks to our table team of Diana, Mihai and Will the sommelier who really looked after us. The praise you receive is well deserved and I recommend anyone who loves a grand occasion In amazing surroundings cared for by delightful professional staff to visit. The food was beautifully crafted. We all argued what was best, but it seems the lamb won the day! Thank you all and see you next time.

Certainly an experience to have at least once, if you can afford it. Dinner for 4 with (not expensive) champagne was about £800+. The food was excellent, but not better than our (much less expensive) high class restaurants in our home town. The presentation, wait staff, and ambience was, of course, impeccable. I had the lamb, which was ordered medium but came out medium rare. The sauce was good but lacked some depth of flavor. That is the way I felt about most of the food there. The wait staff is always present to fulfill any of your needs. Some of the choices involve tableside preparation, which is always a great show. Overall, a great experience.

Amazing place in London. I love the food. can’t wait to come back here again. Congratulations to the staff.

Christmas High Tea with Carols - One for the Bucket Lists! <br/><br/>Over the Christmas period, we got to experience the magical Christmas High Tea that The Ritz offers. <br/><br/>🔆 The ambience was something I doubt I’ll ever experience again. The room was filled with beautiful Christmas decorations that added to the overall feeling of elegance. The Christmas carol singers beautifully sung accompanying a pianist. Their voices filled the room without overpowering it. It really did feel truly magical. <br/><br/>👥 The service was outstanding with each waiter sticking to a clear role. They all seamlessly worked together to make such a smooth dining experience. It was actually quite remarkable watching them all perform their work. <br/><br/>Whilst it wasn’t a cheap High Tea, it was everything we expected PLUS more! It was an experience that I’ll never forget and truly cherish from my visit to London.

The high tea is what the English truly love and stand for, and its that afternoon mingling that we had a chance to do at one of the uber luxury hotels in the world - The Ritz, London.<br/><br/>The array of teas offered was simply unique and delightful. Among others that we sampled, was the Darjeeling first flush and the British favorite, Earl Grey. Each tea had its distinct flavor and lasting taste. <br/><br/>The accompaniments with the tea were some delicious pastries, sandwiches, and cupcakes.<br/><br/>The luxurious Victorian decor, with ceilings decorated in gold and white, the live music played by a master pianist, the polished butlers and servers who engaged with us in the most pleasant manner - all gave us a truly lasting experience of the quintessential afternoon must-do in the British atypical day, in an exceptionally luxurious manner nevertheless - High tea at The Ritz

The dining room is magnificent, the atmosphere luxurious, the service immaculate, the food sublime. For me the highlight of the meal was the grouse, cooked medium in a sous vide it melted in the mouth. but then the lemon soufflé was very close second.

This is the most authentic place one can go to for afternoon tea in london. The decor screams victorian and dated. The staff is the most polite i have ever come across. The toilets are still called powder rooms. Everything is so pretty. The best desserts i have had till now. The tea smelled so good and the sandwiches have never been so tasty before.
Greg
My wife and I had a truly amazing lunch we were made to feel welcome and special. The dining room looked beautiful and service, food and ambience was perfect we would not hesitate in recommending the Ritz.
Miro
We had afternoon tea at the ritz. It is a must try experience. Everything was very nice, the decor, the cutlery, the glasses, the cups, the food, the desserts, the tea, except the scones, they can be better. Highly recommended.

If you have the money to spend then The Ritz is a must! Knocks away any posh restaurant by a mile in terms of quality 🥂. From the moment u walk in, until you leave, expect treatment like you are nothing but royalty ☺️ Glass chandeliers, pure silver cutlery, 18th century Louis XVI style architecture, and a massive grand piano are small examples of the things you'd find at The Ritz. 😅

With great amusement both my brother and mother said “Are you going to blog about the Ritz?!”. The whole reason I blog is to share fun experiences that I’d like to remember and may go some way to answering questions may have about them. Well the Ritz fits into those categories perfectly, a fun birthday experience for mum at an iconic London hotel.

Visited Oct 2013<br/>They must be either artists or magicians in the kitchen who create such pieces of art on your plate. The amuse bouches and the starters gave my palate long lasting explosions of flavors on several levels and have therefore set very high expectations towards the main course and dessert. My lamb main course was perfectly fine - cooked just right as I like it and wonderfully presented.<br/><br/>However, Ritz still gets only four instead of five stars from me for two reasons:<br/>1) the souffle dessert was way too sweet for my taste so that I couldn't even finish it, and<br/>2) the prices for wines by the glass are simply extreme. To charge £15-30+ for a 175ml glass is just too much. The wines may be great (and mine indeed was), but maybe it would make sense to offer something more affordable to choose from as well.<br/><br/>Overall, a very nice evening in a very special atmosphere, amazing food presentation and impeccable service.

Exceptional service and decor, top world class. It is like dining in a palace fit for kings and queens. However the breakfast was mediocre, for £35 I would expect a little more than they offered. It is mandatory to get the buffet and it wasnt too impressive. They had the smoked salmon, ham platter, boiled eggs, cereal, quiche, pastries and fresh mixed fruits. The quiche was kind of cold and hard. <br/>I would come back for dinner sometimes but for breakfast it is passable unless I want to enjoy the decor and the service. Also the plates and cutleries were really luxurious, a big plus for me.

I've been to The Ritz many times over the years, mainly to The Ritz Club, however, which is an opulent and outrageously beautiful private members club in the basement of The Ritz Hotel. Last night I finally tested out The Ritz Restaurant upstairs in the hotel. It was as beautiful as the club, with gold everywhere and artwork that makes you swoon. Every part of The Ritz makes you feel as though you've gone back a hundred years, if it wasn't for the way people were dressed and the cameras and phones everywhere, you could easily have believed you were in an era where the monarch was a King and the party in power were the Liberals...

Everything was perfect! It is not just a simple breakfast, it is the breakfast experience at ritz! It is not of course cheap but i think it is worth of it :)

It’s not for me, I think, all that gilt, all those mirrors and all those middle-aged women listening to the plinkety-plink of the piano,  whilst stuffing their faces with champagne, tea, sandwiches and cake.  I’m far too cool for this, I kid myself. I entirely ignore the fact that I am a middle-aged woman with a fondness for champagne, sandwiches, tea and cake.

My colleagues took me to this beautiful place for the birthday dinner and it was the best birthday dinner. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and we were treated royally. We both ordered lamb and they tasted amazing, ending our dinner with chocolate delice. I really enjoyed the dinner, place was great. I can’t wait to get back. Highly recommended!

We went to The Ritz for dinner a while back for celebratory dinner and I can hands down say that it was the best dining experience I’ve ever had. All of us would agree on this. I would describe The Ritz as a dollhouse/fairytale palace - there is something so regal about the whole place. The interior of the dining room is flawless and truly has a wow factor. I was stunned as soon as I walked in and felt privileged to be dining there! The staff were great, very well mannered and sweet. <br/>The menu looked like any other restaurant menu and I thought this was yet another place you pay for the atmosphere. I was wrong - the quality of food actually blew me away.

We went to this restaurant especially for breakfast as we were recommended by a friend. The Place was magnificent and the staff was polite. We ordered English breakfast and it tasted delicious and presented beautifully. We totally loved our first experience here. We are Definitely returning.

If you’re going to do afternoon tea in London, the Ritz is the place to do it.  The quintessential English favourite, it’s easy to see why it occupies the position it does. The team room is pure glamour – high ceilings, golden chandeliers, a bower of flowers alongside clinking china, hushed conversations and the scraping of plates. Husband and I are at their 7:30pm sitting, a tad late for afternoon tea but treating it as our evening meal seems to be a sensible strategy.  Certainly I’m not one to complain about cakes and scones for dinner. We start off with Tea – Orange Pekoe with a side of champers for Husband & having overdosed on tea earlier in the afternoon, I opt for the Passionfruit & Apple herbal number.  Delicious.  Sure beats the supermarket numbers I usually have. The sandwiches are chicken mayo, cucumber & chives, smoked salmon & ham with mustard.  The Ham & Smoked salmon were definite favourites and we cheekily took advantage of a few helpings of those! But for me, it was th

Ah, the iconic Ritz...not too much else you can say! Just kidding, so much to say! <br/><br/>Had afternoon tea and would highly recommend. The tea selection is amazing, and the staff are knowledgeable. The food obviously is amazing!<br/><br/>But what actually makes the Ritz so amazing is the ambiance. The  table settings are beautiful, the food and drink delicate and beautiful,  the floor plan and seating is sophisticated and comfortable. You really feel like you have to put your best foot forward to go here because they certainly do!

We made our way past the gorgeous Palm Court, where the iconic Ritz afternoon tea is served. I've tried the tea a few times, it's incredible but you need to book well in advance as it's very popular. <br/><br/>The dining room of the Ritz is probably one of the most beautiful dining rooms I've ever seen. Windows are floor to ceiling with heavily draped curtains, mirrored walls, neoclassical statues and colossal marble columns reaching up to the beautiful, ornate ceiling. <br/><br/>And hanging from the painted ceiling are garland chandeliers so that you feel you're sitting under a sky of stars..<br/>The table is of course beautifully set with a silver tray for the salt and pepper....<br/><br/>And the plates are a beautiful bluish-green colour with gold edging and a Ritz stamp on them. <br/><br/>Our gorgeous champagne glasses also had the special stamp of luxury on them.

The service was pretty efficient. The staff was warm and quite friendly and made sure that we were completely comfortable. The area is quite big and the ambience is wonderful with beautiful decor, more on the historical side. There are a range of options on the menu which do not disappoint you at all. Along with this, there was an arrangement of a band performance which was just awesome, though we were charged for it.

I recently tried this place and going by it's name, they offered a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, especially the fab scones and cakes. The service is pretty efficient and I would have preferred had they been a little more warm and friendly. The ambience was quite nice but the space is small and thus, you feel a bit packed. All in all a wonderful experience.

A place which offers great food, delicious and delectable. The place is relaxing and welcoming. The staff is attentive, pleasing and amicable. But, there is no bigger downside to this place than disappointing portion sizes. The food is too less to satiate one's appetite and to top it it is very expensive. If only they strike a balance with portion size and pricing, would come back!
Ibrahim Ejaz
In both my visits to this place, I opted for their three course lunch. The food was really in line with the opulent surroundings and a lot better than various five star meals you would have had somewhere else. The staff is prompt and efficient. I would highly recommend this place to every one.

It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. They treated us like royalty and made sure that we are at ease. At first, we went to the bar and ordered a very enjoyable cocktail each. Later, we went for dinner and that's what marked a great impression. There was an array of menu choices along with paid entertainment but that was worth it. Enjoying such delicious food along with great dance and music is actually a bliss.<br/>Felt it was value for money - definitely worth shedding some money to get this royal treatment.

To begin with, the ambience is splendid and enticing. Service at this place is also pleasing and attentive! Coming to our orders, we had Lobster which was cooked really well! On the downside, another dish, Lamb rack, we asked specifically to cook till pink, but arrived blue! Apologies and fix it offers, but well at the standard where this restaurant is, this is unacceptable!

If you are looking for a classy restaurant you have got the one, a bit old fashioned but classy. It is not cheap but not expensive too.<br/>They provide you the best meal from the best staff and you can have that in most beautiful surrounding, what more can you ask for.<br/>It is better than most of the restaurants in Central London.<br/>Men have to wear ties and it looks so classy that way, I would recommend everyone to try this place.
 Eli  Pratt
This place is quite popular but after my experience, I shall not recommend it to anyone. The fish was stone cold and uncooked. On complaining, there was no offer to change the dish. The oysters were a disaster. The staff is decent but for hardly edible food, this place is not worth it.
 Elijah  Schofield
This is one of the most alluring place backed by scrumptious and delectable meal. Presentation of the food was top-notch and not at all messy, service opulent and taste was divine. You would not ask for more! I have not had such a good experience of fine dining before it where everything was in perfect sync.. food, ambiance and service!

I visited this place on my birthday and my birthday couldn't have got any better. Everything was easy and convenient. The staff members have a very pleasing personality and their service is amazing. The starters and the main course that we had ordered arrived at our table in time and they surely have earned some browny points for that. If you're a foodie and you love to visit new places with amazing ambiance and great environment then you definitely have to check this place out. Recommended.

A nice place with an old time charm. The atmosphere is enjoyable and the live entertainment program is wonderful, you can even join in if you like. It's nice for a special night, with you loved one, lots of couples here. The food is good too,ab bit expensive, but the set menu is good value for money.

We decided to dine here when we were in the city recently. The interiors were decorated exceptionally well and the atmosphere was just as beautiful as it should be. The music at both the venues was quite enchanting and seemed to suit the ambiance well. We opted for some expensive champagne and a three course meal which were delectable and well cooked, but not as good as the ambiance itself. The staff was also very attentive. Highly recommended.
 Cameron  John
Love place with wonderful food and equally classy service. We went her for our anniversary and enjoyed a hearty meal. The ambiance is great for a private dinner, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The setting is quite elegant and the music soothing.
Taylor Dickinson
I went to this restaurant for a three course meal and the prices charged for it were in a fairly reasonable range. The quality of food was good but I must say that there are other restaurants serving better quality of food when compared to this place. The service was spot. They also had a lot of variety in the cheese that was on offer.
Amelia Smith
This restaurant gave us a really nice dining experience, except for one glaring and inexcusable error. They had the most posh settings, and a lovely decor. The tea was wonderfully hot an delicious, and the cakes were ravishing. But, we noticed that we were served our courses only after the two tables beside us had been served completely. The only reason I could fathom for this was that my partner is Chinese, and I am very upset with this kind of prejudice.
Lacey Cook
Lovely place to stop by for tea and cakes. The food is great too, complete with all kinds of scones, waffles and cakes, which they keep bringing without having to ask. Even celebrated sister in law's birthday here, and it was a memorable experience too.
Paige Murray
Been on a travel spree of lately, have not been able to catch up to the new and old local destinations for eating off lately in this city. Starting with this one, there is hardly anyone left in this area who probably did not hear of this place. A recently opened joint serving hot dogs and champagne has a queue all the time and the popularity this place has is amazing! Do get to this amazing place as soon as possible!
 Molly  Humphreys
My time spent at this restaurant was absolutely delightful! I did not even want to part ways with it. The ambiance is so amazing that you could sit in there forever. The food, very simple at times, did not fail to amaze you with every bite with its delicate flavours. The staff was very amicable and all of this combined made for a restaurant you would want to come to repeatedly. It can be quite expensive though. Highly recommended.
Esme Bell
This place gives an overall relaxing feel to your lunch or dinner. Me and my friend usually turn up here after completing our seminar in this city as it is nearby. Food is appealing and appetizing. Service is prompt and efficient. I would definitely recommend this place to every one.
Poppy Evans
The ambiance is very good here , this place is very beautiful. The light is amazing and I really would love to appreciate their interior designer ( if they have one) <br/>These guys serve you different types of teas and that is a good change if you do not like coffee much (like me).<br/>This place is worth a visit.
Jessica Davies
I visited this place while I was travelling in the neighbourhood. My partner did not fit the dress code of the place, but the management was kind enough to lend us some clothes. They place has a great variety of desserts on offer. This was an experience that will be etched in my memory forever.
 Elliot  Farrell
I already did my research for this place and i knew in advance that this place is quite expensive, but i was ready to spend that much as it was my nana's birthday. The food is although appealing and appetizing but extremely costly. So think twice before going to this place.
Vicky Dutta
If you are looking for afternoon tea then you must give this place a visit else there is nothing special about this place. You won't be having any fine dining experience and the service is also not that good . I do not think that I will be coming here again.

On Sunday evening we went to The Ritz for a celebration dinner and I can hands down say that it was the best dining experience I’ve ever had. <br/><br/>I would describe The Ritz as a dollhouse/fairytale palace – there is something so regal about the whole place. The interior of the dining room is flawless and truly has a wow factor. I was stunned as soon as I walked in - the staff were great, very well mannered and sweet.<br/><br/>Starters<br/>We were brought bread to start with followed by canapés.<br/>Cheeseballs, tartare on crackers and lobster-paste macaroons. Whoever came up with the macaroon is a genius because it was such a creative and tasty little invention – I loved it. I ordered Var Salmon which was stunning. The texture was like sashimi and it was served with Cucumber and Lemon Crème Fraiche. The pate was starter was also delicious.<br/><br/>Main<br/>The way the dishes were served and lids were lifted up all together was very nice and traditional. The lamb was mouthwatering, one of the best I’ve ever tasted. This is what I call tender. I always ask for tender but never usually get it. The lamb was served with Herb Crust, Artichokes and Black Garlic.<br/><br/>Dessert<br/>This soufflé was made very nicely but was the only dish that didn’t make my jaw drop. This is simply because fruity pastry isn’t my thing. I wish I had the Blackberry Parfait instead, it was beautiful. I had to dig my spoon into this dessert as well. After the desserts came a complementary set of sweets. This included vanilla/white chocolate macaroons, need I say more?<br/><br/>I would rate The Ritz 6/5 if I could, perfect for a special occasion

Experience a typical english afternoon tea  in a royal way! <br/>The moment you step in till the time you leave feel the royal air around you! Dress well before going here- Thats a tip :) <br/>The beautiful piano being played throughout just added to the ambience. <br/>The tea served in the silver teapots  were constantly being refilled and so as the sandwiches. Food is fabulous but what leaves an impression is the place, service and ambience.<br/>The staff were incredible.<br/>To be honest its something everyone should experience once in their lives. Truly amazing experience!<br/>Book well in advance as very busy.

LUXURIOUS atmosphere. CHIC and EXCLUSIVE place.<br/><br/>The Ritz Restaurant makes you feel like in wonderland with its chandeliers and perfect high ceilings. It is the best place for a formal occasion with family and friends.<br/><br/>The menu is very well organized and divided through different sections. I had as my main course an artichoke veloute, which was very salutary and soft. As a dessert, I chose crepes suzette which are meant to be shared by two people and they will be prepared for you at the table!<br/><br/>I enjoyed the experience very much. The restaurant is obviously expensive and you should expect to spend a minimum of 150 £ for two.<br/>EXCELLENT QUALITY. Book a table in advance.
We Love Food, It's All We Eat
Being food bloggers we get to do a whole host of exciting things, meet interesting and passionate people, try a wide variety of food, stay in stunning hotels. Never in a million years did we imagine we’d end up in the kitchens at the lavish Ritz hotel on a Saturday morning for a dessert masterclass. But there we were, joined by a few others a little bleary eyed but very excited, lapping up every second and taking in every sight and sound of the vast kitchens buried underneath the hotel.<br/><br/>Head pasty chef Lewis Wilson was our guide, he explained how we’d help create a Vanilla, chocolate and hazelnut ice bombe with hazelnut daquiose and feullatine. Easy for him, not so easy for us amateurs (no offence to the others). We whipped ice cream, melted chocolate (not any old chocolate – 63% Amedei from Tuscany), piped praline, moulded ice cream and glazed the bombe – we finally gave up when it came to the finishing touches of decoration, spindly ‘S’ shaped chocolate curls were as fragile as a house of cards. Ade compared the topper to Jordan’s wedding carriage from one of her many nuptials. It did look much grander than that, so stunning we couldn’t stop gazing at it, we were full of appreciation for all the stages and effort that this creation went through. Whilst in the kitchen we learnt that The Ritz serve a staggering 400 afternoon teas a day.<br/><br/>The fun didn’t stop there, we were led back up to the splendour of the hotel and into the restaurant for lunch where we would be presented with the very same bombe for our dessert. The room was like something out of ancient Greece, but then it has been there since 1906 – with marble columns, a vast golden glow sweeps the entire ceiling, gilded statues stand proud at the end of the room. This was absolute heaven for people watcher addicts like us (that sounded creepier than it was intended).<br/><br/>After our bread selection and an amuse bouche trio we leapt into our starter of Var salmon with beetroot, horseradish and orange. The prettiest and tastiest plate, gently poached fish daintily embellished with dots of roe atop a beetroot smear that wouldn’t look out of place in a beauty feature. For wine loves there’s an infamous wine list, including some of their own wines that can’t be found anywhere else. Our sommelier for lunch put us at ease with no wine babble, in fact the head sommelier, Tobias Brauweiler came in the top six of the UK Sommelier of the Year Competition 2012. We fell in love with the red wine from Bordeaux – The Ritz Pauillac Premium Selection 2010 Baron Philippe de Rothschild £64 a bottle.<br/><br/>Next was Loin of lamb with a herb crust, caramelised shallots and peas. A great juicy hunk of meat, balanced by the freshness of the peas and pea shoots. I am not normally a fan of lamb but this was really good, so much so I ate every last morsel. The herb crust was exactly that, a crust, not that powdery coating you can get from lesser kitchens. The peas were crisp and sweet whilst the softened onions offered a little change of texture.<br/><br/>And of course dessert was our Chocolate and hazelnut bombe masterpiece, drawing admiring glances (and even a sneaky photo from other diners) when it arrived and served at our table. At table preparation and service, a lost art that the Ritz are proud of, so much so executive chef John Williams MBE has even introduced a ‘Les Arts de la Table’ menu at £75 per person for three courses. Which includes a glass of Ritz Cuvée Champagne and with dishes expertly carved or filleted in front of your very eyes, talk about adding theatre to one’s meal!<br/><br/>We weren’t finished just yet, coffee and ‘frivolities’ were yet to come and I needed a doggy bag. A silver tray of petit fours including macarons and gorgeous raspberry topped cakes complete with a teeny ‘R’ was placed before us. Such seamless service throughout, but then we’d expect nothing less, it took me a while to get used to the only man at the table being served last, it’s ladies first all the way here. We’d never have thought about coming here to eat, not because we didn’t think it would be good, but because we assumed we couldn’t afford it. The Ritz is about much more than afternoon tea, and at £49 a head for a regularly changing three-course set lunch, it’s not that unachievable either.<br/><br/>We ate at The Ritz as their guests, this does not affect our review in any way. We always write with complete honesty.

This meal began with a few nibbles including unusually light and fluffy cheese gougeres, with lots of cheese flavour yet meltingly delicate. The first course was a mosaic of game, a terrine involving several different meats, quince, beetroot and a truffle mayonnaise (16/20). Next was a single large langoustine tail, delicately cooked and served with cauliflower and spiced apple. The langoustine was palpably fresh, with a lovely sweetness; the only slight flaw was the cauliflower crisp was a little soggy, or I would have scored this higher (16/20). <br/><br/>Truffled egg was served on a pomme puree with spinach and a garnish of white truffle. The potato was smooth and buttery, the richness of the egg balanced by the spinach (16/20). A generous slab of turbot from a large fish was served with pumpkin, mushrooms and a shellfish sauce, the turbot precisely cooked and having very good flavour, the mushroom also excellent (16/20). Venison with red cabbage, celeriac and duck liver was lovely, the deer having excellent flavour, the cabbage and celeriac providing an earthy balance to the richness of the meat.<br/><br/>Apple parfait with vanilla and calvados ice cream was excellent, the apple not too sharp, garnished with little spheres of caramelised apples (17/20). Finally a classic Mont Blanc with caramelised pear completed the meal, the pureed chestnuts slightly sweetened and seasonal, topped with whipped cream (17/20). Service was impeccable, each waiter in the large brigade knowing his duties, and even with a packed dining room dishes appeared and were removed at a steady pace, the topping up faultless.<br/><br/>The Ritz is one of London’s most enjoyable dining experiences, from the pretty dining room, the comfortable chairs through to the consistently excellent classical cooking. The bill with some wine came to £120 a head, though there is a three-course menu available at £49 a head.

If you're going to do afternoon tea in London, the Ritz is the place to do it. The quintessential English favourite, it's easy to see why it occupies the position it does.<br/><br/>The team room is pure glamour - high ceilings, golden chandeliers, a bower of flowers alongside clinking china, hushed conversations and the scraping of plates.<br/><br/>Husband and I are at their 7:30pm sitting, a tad late for afternoon tea but treating it as our evening meal seems to be a sensible strategy. Certainly I'm not one to complain about cakes and scones for dinner.<br/><br/>We start off with Tea - Orange Pekoe with a side of champers for Husband & having overdosed on tea earlier in the afternoon, I opt for the Passionfruit & Apple herbal number. Delicious. Sure beats the supermarket numbers I usually have.<br/><br/>The sandwiches are chicken mayo, cucumber & chives, smoked salmon & ham with mustard. The Ham & Smoked salmon were definite favourites and we cheekily took advantage of a few helpings of those!<br/> <br/>But for me, it was the scones that stole the day. I've never been a real scone aficionado, I'll usually have one, nod politely and move on to another course. Not this time. I had 3. It wasn't just that they were warm and soft and melt in the mouth - I can't even explain - they were perfectly formed rounds of goodness. They held their shape perfectly on cutting - no crumbs at the Ritz thank you very much.<br/><br/>Despite scone-ish gluttony, I still managed to find room for dessert. The dessert plate came with macaroons (Half Lemon & Half Blueberry with a white choc center), a divine chocolate mousse and a light as air sponge.<br/><br/>The trolley came around with Strawberry trifle and a choice of Black Forest cake and Lemon Drizzle. We both opted for the dark, dense Black Forest - not as much Cherry as I'd like but delicious none the less. Trifles were similarly demolished at speed.<br/><br/>For a special occasion, it's easy to see why the Ritz is largely seen as the 'place for tea'. It's glamorous with a touch of old fashioned class and charm.

We had some concerns as you do, when visiting somewhere so prestigious and potentially wallet busting. High profile venues like The Ritz all too often live off past glories. Fortunately this was not the case here, although there was no getting past the cost factor. The wine was very expensive. Don't expect to find bottles at the £30 mark, the lowest price is around £50, but give it its due, the bottle of Marlborough Pinor Noir we ordered was delightful. We very sensibly chose on this occasion to go for the set lunch which consisted of three courses for £45, rather than go a la carte, where you could pay the same price for a single course! I should also say at this stage, that the set lunch was very good indeed, so by going down that route you really are not slumming it. <br/><br/>There was the inevitable Champagne Trolley to avoid before the meal began. We were quite happy to just go with a jug of tap water (admittedly a silver plated one).<br/><br/>The amuse bouche was served in a Champagne glass and we chose some rather nice bacon flavoured home made bread. The set lunch menu was certainly enticing, I started with a rather moreish Mackerel dish and my companion had a very tasty salt beef and foie gras terrine. This was followed by main courses of duck and venison, delivered under cloches and revealed with some theatre. This was comfort food of the highest order, both were absolutely delicious. Then for dessert we had a classic Ritz dish, the Chestnut Souffle with Rum ice cream, a real treat. We did not order coffee but were still presented with what I can honestly say were the best selection of petit fours I have had in a restaurant for a long time. So in summary although the food is not cutting edge by any means, one of the reasons this meal stood out for us, was that nothing jarred, from the bread right through to the petit fours, everything was uniformly excellent and that is a rarity even in the best of restaurants.

Ritz Afternoon Tea a quite famous thing in london which people wishes. I visited Ritz and he whole experience was amazing a total 5 star kind. From the beautifully presented sandwiches through to the dainty cakes, with delicious warm scones, & the superb and friendly service from all the staff, not forgetting the Harp music playing softly in the background,a rendition of "happy birthday" was played whilst delivery to the table of a surprise cake for my bf, the afternoon was out of this world, presentation was awesome to say the least, & the doormen were like really polite and so friendly, Thank you so much for the best afternoon ever. I would really advice everyone do not miss the chance of afternoon tea at the Ritz. Its a real memorable experience.

Afternoon tea at the Ritz is the worst of London's grand hotels. Rushed, disinterested service, and squashed seating. We were being served desserts within half an hour and hadn't even got our tea. After an hour tables were being cleared for next service and we were prompted with our bill. The aim was clearly to get us out. Sandwiches were ok, scones had no texture, cakes to be fair were great. Far better places to go unless Ritz name is your thing.
