Want to have authentic Venezuelan food in the middle of a London suburb?
This humble cafe is your place. The food was delicious, offering a variety of traditional fayre with a super lovely waitress. We really enjoyed all of the food.
We had Pastelitos and mini empanadas to start whilst sipping on some delicious cocktails. The Man had the national dish of Pabellon Criollo and I had Pabellon de Pollo. They were both very tasty and satisfying and were simply presented.
After all of this and a couple more cocktails we managed to find room for dessert, being a big sweet-lover I try to squeeze one in wherever I go. I had hot churros and the man had a traditional pudding made with condensed milk (I can't recall the name) it was very sweet and nice but I couldn't eat too much!
Overall a nice experience in a bright cafe with funky artwork on the walls and Venezuelan goods on sale in a mini-shop shelving unit. The waitress was a gem, just so lovely, knowledgeable and chatty. I just think it was priced a little bit high. For everything else, definitely worth a visit.
Great breakfast spot. Lovely staff and delicious, reasonably priced food. The chica (rice milkshake) is amazing!
Great food in a very warm and friendly atmosphere!. We decided to take the trip to Crystal Palace to apeace my wife's craving for "cachapas" (a venezuelan sweet corn pancake) in this restaurant some one had recommended to her, so we embarked a couple of friends (all venezuelan and with the promise of a culinary experience as we hadn't had in years...) and off we went...
The day was beautiful, sunny and mild, just perfect, to my liking...
When we arrived, after a short walk from the station through the streets and beautiful houses of what seems to be a very nice neigbourhood, we were greeted by Alex, the owner of the restaurant and immediately were made to feel at home...
It was just after lunch time so, although there were still some customers around, we could pick a table of our liking and Alex was very quick to help us settle down and explain some of the delicacies on offer as our tastebuds were been excited by the smells coming out from the kitchen, where Mary, Alex's wife, would be preparing what we came looking after.
We order some Tequeños, arepitas con queso, tostones con queso y pollo, chorizo con cassava fingers and, of course my wife's cachapa con queso and some typical venezuelan soft drinks.
The food was prompt, hot, plentyful and, above all, delicious. All made even better by Alex's attentions and good conversation and music selection.
All in all, it was a very good experience and we will most definitely be back with more friends and by ourselves and I have no doubt on recommending Mi Cocina es Tuya to all of you!!!!!
Charming, authentic, Venezuelan local. Just opened, run by a lovely Venezuelan couple, and already seems to have become something of a hub for both the ex pat and local community.
We shared freshly made beef empanadas, a cocado (delicious coconut smoothie), some robust LatAm coffee, pabellon (spicy shredded beef, rice, plantain and black beans), the Venezuelan breakfast (black beans, white cheese, scrambled eggs with spring onion), some sweetcorn fritters with grilled cheese, and arepa (sp?) which was a fried dough cake with a delicious coriander sauce.
Very much looking forward to working our way through the rest of the menu!
I recently had some serious cravings for South American food. It started with booking in to go to Buen Ayre for Argentinian steak. (This happened and probably not blogged about yet because I am still full.) Then, I was reminded of this amazing but elusive arepa I once had a Maltby Street but never saw again...until I learned they have a permanent cafe near Elephant and Castle. This then led me to look up and drool over Columbian restaurants near Elephant and Castle. Anyways, somehow, all of that culminated at a Venezuelan cafe Mi Cocina es Tuya in Crystal Palace. I don't know. Anyways, I'm very happy to have discovered this adorable restaurant. Also, this marks the first time in Crystal Palace, woo! Don't worry, there are plenty of pubs nearby too...win. The restaurant is very small, full of personalized decor, and clearly family owned...win again. Seriously, I love places like this. In atypical fashion, we decided to order some sugarcane rum cocktails. This was a very good de
Between the two of us, we split a couple of things. First, a cachapa with chicken, and a side of cheese. This was a thick fresh corn cake topped with spiced chicken and with a side of fresh crumbly white cheese on the side. The sweet and slightly spicy and salty all went together brilliantly and I loved it with lashings of the guasacaca and chilli sauces. We also split what was described as Venezuela’s national dish – pabellón criollo. This is a plate of rice and black beans and slow cooked shredded spiced beef. We got some sweet fried plantains on top too. This was especially comforting on that cold Sunday and also ridiculously delicious. I’m a huge fan of rice and beans and this was excellent. It also comes in pork and chicken versions.
The food was EXCELLENT. I will definitely go back. So nicely cooked, full of flavour and you can tell it was made with care. There are vegan options as well. Try the soursop juice. I can’t remember the translation but the staff will definitely know what you mean :-)
Such delicious food !
And really nice Americano sweetened with sugar cane ☕ it's called Guayoyo
Athmosphere is warm and friendly.
The reason for the 3 stars here is personal taste regarding interior design. I would love for it to be more cozy and eclectic, different wooden chairs, colourful frames for the great pictures - I love the masks tho! 👹
Visited for dinner on Wednesday. The staff are amazing, they kindly explained the menu and made some great suggestions. The food was delicious, full of flavour and fresh. Tried the soursop juice which was freshly made and delicious. Will return many more times 💛 They also said they will be introducing additional Mexican dishes in the next few weeks, which I am excited to try.
Incredible home cooked, authentic food in such a friendly and welcoming place. Exceptional value. The owner was brilliant in explaining the menu and the importance of authentic Latin American ingredients and it was totally justified in the food! Can’t wait to go back!
It was my first time visiting Mi Cocina and it was a great experience. It has a relaxed atmosphere and quite a big menu. The food was very tasty and was cooked from fresh. It is very cosy in there and I will definitely be visiting again.
Stopped for lunch while walking around Crystal Palace and it was marvellous. No-frills very authentic feeling and atmosphere, tasty food, friendly service. Too bad I live far and won't go back too often!
Absolutely delicious. The staff are AMAZING. Food even better. A wonderful local spot on the triangle and we will be back soon!
If feels like being in a private Venezuelan kitchen. Hearty food, perfect-sized portions, the owner, pregnant in October, advising on what's best for you according to your likings and hunger not trying to sell you the most expensive dish. All of that makes you believe that you are actually in her house, waiting for her to show off her mother country cuisine. Food is slow-cooked, no added sugars, the plantain is delicious so is the wet corn wrap in the pic below (with 3 kinds of meat in it). I will go again and try some other dishes. Venezuelan cuisine is different from the European one and this place makes you want to come back to experience more.
Really great Venezuelan food! Loved it all Empanadas, Arepas, Cachapas, Pabello Criollo and the dessert Torts 3 Leche . absolutely amazing.
This is a lovely family-run restaurant. The food is tasty and the service is very welcoming. I recommend the cinnamon milk drink! It is basically a delicious cinnamon bun in liquid form.
