I left Incredibly impressed by the food. Everything was simply perfect. Not overly salty (which seemed to be big issue at other establishments) and cooked perfectly. My favorite was the mushroom foam with bits of mushroom and other yummy bits. I normally hate foam. It usually looks unappealing and taste bad but this mushroom consume foam was mind blowing, lightly frothy but packed with umami. I like this place for their creative plates that revealed clever combinations of food that paired well with each other and got better with each bite as you discovered more underneath the layers of food. This was easily my best meal in London. A real 3 Michelin star restaurant that deserves it. The lunch meal was a incredible value. I can't wait to come back. thanks guys keep up the good work.I left Incredibly impressed by the food. Everything was simply perfect. Restaurants over 20 years old holding two Michelin stars are a rare sight these days around London so today we thought we’d go and visit one. Phil Howard has been at The Square over half his life after stints with the legendary Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Albert Roux at Le Gavroche. These days he’s the owner of The Square restaurant and author of its two books ‘Savoury’ and ‘Sweet’ both of which are quality works of a man dedicated to his craft.

''Bijou' ambience, really Great service, 'modern' formal without being stiff. A great place to go with friends and family for a special occasion. The best thing about this place is it being perfect for all the occasions. We opted for the tasting menu which had 9 courses. The courses were playful enough without going overboard. The chef has an menu to choose from, we started with lasagne of Dorset crab with cappuccino of shellfish land champagne foam, this is one of their signature dish and the best too. Rest of the food was awesome.
In desserts I recommend passion fruit and lemon soufflé.
The service was excellent as you would expect from a two Michelin star restaurant.

I have a significant backlog of meals that are in the blog queue. My last visit to the Square was late in January which I had yet to write about. Yet, when browsing through the news on twitter today, I was hit by the bombshell that this was the last week for Gary Foulkes. Say what?!?  I so happened to be around the vicinity, attending a course at the Royal Society of Medicine and after confirming that the rumours were indeed true, decided to drop by the Square to have one last meal with Gary in charge.

We have just returned from a nice holiday away to the Far East. I will update the blog with a few of our meals out there. In the mean time, I have a back log of meals to cover from before we headed off for our vacation. I popped in to the Square for a cheeky Saturday lunch as I was around the area looking to purchase a suit for my sister’s wedding. A quick phone call confirmed that they had a table free so I made no hesitation in heading there. I was greeted by familiar faces, none more so than sommelier Mohammed whom I have not seen during my last couple of visits to the Square. After exchanging pleasantries, I was shown to my table and with a nice cold glass of ’05 Dom Perignon in hand, started to make the difficult decision of what I would be eating.

I was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks working out of London, which was exciting enough on its own, but even more so given my love of fine dining.  With a veritable smorgasbord of incredible restaurants on offer, how would I ever be able to narrow the choice down to just a few special dining establishments?

We spent half of our honeymoon in London, March 2013 and The Square was on our list of Michelin star restaurants to visit. We did the 3 course dinner at £90pp. Quite steep when you converted it to South African Rands at the time but well worth every cent. The banana souffle was the highlight of the evening. My husband still speaks about it. Definitely worth a visit if you're a keen foodie and can afford it ☺

Since the last time I wrote about the Square, they have seen 4 different maître d’s, a change in their head chef (Rob Weston has now moved on to head up La Trompette which is also owned by Nigel Platts-Martin, in his place is Gary Foulkes, a former sous chef here), a dining room refresh and a new kitchen being fitted. During my time of non-blogging, I have become somewhat of a regular here and have even done a day’s stage in their kitchen – trust me when I say that it is really tough work.

I decided to return to the Square to try their full tasting menu as I had been so blown away by their lunch service.  As the price, including wine, was to be an eight fold increase, was the food eight times better?  You might be wondering how I got to this figure.  Well, the geek in me contends that if I take a number, let’s say 2 and cube it (2 x 2 x 2) I do indeed get 8!  Which is  2 cubed!  I gave myself a pat on the back for my witty turn of phrase and mathematical ability.  Go me!  Having put such self-congratulations out of the way, let me turn my attention to the food.

30th March 2015 · by Chris · in eating , England , London On the last day of my holiday I decided to save the most interesting for last.  The Square.  I was last here several years ago and left not very impressed to be honest.  All my friends have implored me to give it another chance, so I decided that I would try.  Maybe they had an off day. Off to a good start.  What a pretty plate!  Not square though and it has lots of circles.  With a restaurant with this name, I almost expected a plate in the shape of it’s namesake.  Maybe the name “the square” was a reference to “square” meals, I thought.  Hmmm.. House bread.  Not bad.  A definite step up from Hibiscus and Dinner but not up to the heady heights of Fera.  Disappointingly not square either. The amuse bouches.  Rabbit nugget, something which tasted like the prawn crackers I used to have in Chinese restaurants in my youth (but much more refined). And a caramel wrap.  In particular, I noted to the waiter that the wrap was the same as the one I had previously raved about!  I still dream of this: The egg spring roll I had on my previous visit.  It really blew me away then.  Read about it here . I thoroughly enjoyed all of these.  The rabbit nugget (my plebeian name for the dish as I forgot what it is supposed to be called) seemed to be like a minute rabbit explosion in my mouth.  Best of all, it was a square!  I almost laughed to myself in childish delight over the shape.  But of course I didn’t show any sign of this.  I am of course too mature for that.  The prawn cracker was a lovely taste of the sea and a trip down memory lane for me.  The wrap was a lovely surprise with the caramel and nuts combining in the wrap to create a little crepe-like delight. Salad of potato with smoked eel, leeks, pollen and olive oil.  Now, I am not much of a fan of eel from the western world.  I recoil in disgust every time I am offered jellied eels.  Although I do love it when it is served in Japan.  My impression of western eel was

Wonderful meal, attentive service. I went to this restaurant on my Wife's birthday, we had the tasting menu with the wine. The fish dishes were cooked to perfection and the combination of wines and food was excellent. They even made the desert specially for my wife given her birthday! The staff were very attentive and even asked part way through the meal if we preferred them to speed up or slow down the service. What I would expect from such a restaurant.

We really enjoyed our lunch at The Square, the food is superlative and service is impeccable. With a taster menu you rarely love absolutely everything on there, but 3 dishes for us really stood out as being amongst the best food we've had; A Tasting of Spring, Sauté of Langoustine Tails and Lasagne of Dorset Crab.
There maybe more 'exciting' fashionable options in London right now, but for exquisite food and excellent service you can't go wrong with The Square.

The ragout of John Dory was brilliant. John Dory was combined with cod, leeks, clams, mussels, oysters and chives. Everything about this dish was wonderful from the spinach base to the creamy both and the lovely plump fresh shellfish. Both fish were worthy of their star billing with the cod possibly out-muscling the John Dory. However, the unexpected highlights were the luscious creamy oyster and the superb herby crab, scallop mousse and langoustine claw tortellini. This was a dish that made you feel totally happy with your lot in life.

The Square in Mayfair has been on my radar for many years, a two Michelin starred restaurant, I finally got to experience it last weekend. After visiting it's one Michelin-starred sister restaurant Kitchen W8 a couple of years ago, and having a really really exceptional meal, to say I was excited is an understatement. For the past 23 years (it was born the same year as me - 1991!) Phil Howard's baby has been renowned amongst London foodies, and I counted down the weeks before we went.  The Square is located on Bruton Street, right around the corner from Mr Foggs . We were greeted warmly by the staff, and then sat down in the light and airy dining room, which at 1pm was already busy.

You know that there is something wrong with your life when you can’t get excited about going to a restaurant with 2 Michelin stars. Or at least there is something wrong with my life. But you know that by now. And the truth is that every time I decide to go to The Square, I keep thinking that this will be the time when I get it , this will be the time when it speaks to me and this will with the time when I understand why people get so excited about it. Oh well. You can’t really find out much about The Square on their website. A few pictures and a plug for Philip Howard’s new book. One to add to the mountain. So we go with the £90 menu. Not that there’s a choice. Actually, there is a choice. You can spend more than that by going for one of the options with a supplement. I hate that.

A la carte or tasting, most mortals can't afford to eat at The Square too regularly. At £35 for the set lunch however, it is tempting to stop visiting other restaurants altogether and permanently eat at The Square. The question for this visit was always: do you get a two star experience for a budget price?

The Square is a 2 Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair and, as you would expect, is sleek and sophisticated. What I didn’t know and what you might not either is that in addition to the a la carte menu The Square regularly hosts special dinners focusing on a particular theme. We were lucky enough to be there, courtesy of head chef Philip Howard, for Go Wild at The Square, showcasing the amazing game and autumn produce this country has to offer.

The 9 course tasting menu started with roasted and smoked chestnuts, hand peeled, as Chef Howard’s aching hands could personally testify! Nothing speaks to me more of autumn than roasted chestnuts so this really set the tone for the meal.

Next was game consommé accompanied by pickled walnuts and venison canapés. Consomme seems to have fallen out of favour recently but it has a real depth and clarity of flavour. The bite sized morsels that accompanied it were divine, standout for me was a venison tartare.

Then Loch Ryan native oyster with a tartare of mackerel, seawater jellies and caviar, fresh and briny it took me back to my childhood, growing up near West Mersey Island. As a child I never really appreciated these salty treats, but then they weren’t presented in quite the same way on our school trips! If anything could convert former oyster haters it would be this delicate dish.

Next ravioli of cepes with crushed pumpkin, chanterelles and pine oil, again this was autumn on a plate.

The fish course was fillets of dove sole with truffled cauliflower puree. What stole the show for me was the truffled cauliflower, never before or since has the humble cauli inspired such feelings in me. If I thought I could get away with it I would have licked my plate clean!

The meat course was breast of grouse with a croustillant of the leg, medlar jelly and bacon. I will be honest I was very full at this point and so couldn’t properly do this dish justice but I loved the sharpness of the medlar jelly against the richness of the grouse.

Pre dessert was a piece of showmanship a quince and sloe sphere, what nefarious arts created this I’m not sure, but it was inspired.

Dessert was a signature Square dish Brillat savarin Cheesecake with elderberry and cobnuts.

Finally Canelle de Bordeaux with Fulham Palace honey and beeswax a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard center and a dark, thick caramelized crust. They had been baked in beeswax and the scent as they were brought into the room was delicious.

I would recommend keeping an eye on the Square’s blog to see what other special dinners are coming up, as a decadent way to spend a Monday evening it can’t be beaten!

The Square originally opened in St James in 1991, then moved to Bruton Street in 1997. It gained a Michelin star in 1994, and two stars in 1998, which it has retained ever since. Phil Howard’s cooking is quite classical in style, though by no means old-fashioned. The dining room has a somewhat masculine feel, with wood panelling and widely spaced tables covered in crisp white linen tablecloths.

The Square is noted for its extensive and (by central London standards) modestly priced wine list, starting at £24 and with over 1,000 choices, at a median price of £145. Franck Massard Cesta Granacha-Samso 2009 was £29.50 for a wine that you can find in the high street for £7.80, Mount Difficulty Pinot Noir 2009 was £45 for a wine that retails at £24, and Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir 1995 was £95 compared to a shop price of around £31. The relative mark-ups moderate considerably as you move up the list. Leflaive Batard Montrachet 2000 was £400 for a wine that will set you back £279 in a shop, Louis Jadot Le Montrachet 1996 at £395 for a wine that retails at £375.

Beetroot salad was prettily presented, served with charred celeriac and semi-dried pear with goat’s curd, pickled walnuts and ice wine vinegar. The components were good, though I would have preferred a little more sharpness, as there was a hint of sweetness about the dish that I am not sure completely worked (16/20). I felt on surer ground with the well-established dish here of sautéed Scottish langoustine tails with Parmesan gnocchi and an emulsion of potato and truffle. The shellfish were lovely, the gnocchi having a pleasing hint of firmness (18/20). Rabbit on a bed of pasta with white truffles was very enjoyable, the rabbit tender and avoiding the drying-out that so often afflicts this dish, the pasta having very good texture (17/20).

Loin of fallow deer was served on a tarte fine of pear and celeriac, and on the side a pan of creamed polenta, beetroot and green peppercorns. This was another enjoyable dish, the meat having good flavour, the pastry having been rendered a little soggier than it doubtless started by its contact with the meat (17/20).

Brillat-Savarin cheesecake with passion fruit, lime and coconut is another familiar dish here, the balance of the dish excellent, with the fruits cutting through the richness of the cheesecake, the texture of the base good (18/20).

The bill, with just water to drink, came to £121 a head, with a la carte dishes rather than those from a set menu. Service was excellent This was a very enjoyable meal, the first that I have had since long-standing head chef Rob Weston (under Phil Howard) moved to La Trompette. I do not think the standard of the cooking has really changed that much following this, but as at my last meal here the best dishes at 18/20 level, the average closer to 17/20 standard. The prices here are quite high, but this is certainly one of London’s best dining experiences.

I don’t like Mondays just as much as the Boomtown Rats. Nor does the restaurant industry. Everyone’s back to work, the markets are closed, and no one goes out to eat. Indeed, the best places are often shut at the beginning of the week. Not, however, The Square. I’d read praise for it as having “flawless” service, serving up “sophisticated” food, with Phillip Howard‘s restaurant being “the best of its type”. An excellent reputation demands high expectations. On the Monday I went, I experienced nothing to such acclaim. I have to ask: Where was our fantastic meal that everybody else is having?

Let’s start with the good stuff. The classical French menu reads well. To start we chose roast Orkney scallops with crushed butternut squash, chanterelles, chestnuts and white truffle (£5 supplement), the lasagne of Dorset crab with a cappuccino of shellfish and champagne foam, and scorched Roscoff onion with a persillade of Somerset snails and a savoury brioche roulade. There’s very little, if in fact anything, to complain about the food. You can read a bite-by-bite analysis of the food elsewhere. All I say here is that it was classically brilliant. Even the portions are generous – in fact, perhaps the most generous of any Michelin restaurant I’ve been to. But I can’t help thinking that I’d rather have a smaller plate, for the sake of my waistline and my bank account.

Mains are just as traditional and just as filling: rib of beef (for two) with a croustillant of oxtails, smoked tendons, stuffed shallots and red wine and, for it being in season, breast of grouse with turnip and celeriac, pancetta and blackberries (£10 supplement). The crispy potato roulade encasing confit leg meat was the best element on the plate. We shared a tooth-decaying milk chocolate bar with salted peanuts, praline and banana ice cream for dessert. Three courses for £80 may seem steep, but it’s the price you pay for Mayfair and two stars. Not to mention, The Ledbury offers exactly the same deal. However, don’t get me started on the supplements (grumble grumble). Anyway, the food. It was all beautifully presented, accurately executed, and well-seasoned. We all agreed that we enjoyed the meal, but… But that was it. I felt it was predictable and, dare I say, underwhelming. The words ‘bang’ and ‘buck’ come to mind.

The ninety-page wine list will send wine enthusiasts into anaphylactic shock. So will the prices at the higher end of things, although there is a remarkably decent selection under £50. We went by the glass, with unremarkable recommendations from the sommelier of Vouvray, Silex Noir, Francois Pinon, 2010 (£13.00) and Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine La Roquete, Daniel Brunier, 2004 (£13.00). And they were unremarkable because the sommelier hadn’t checked what we had ordered. In fact, he – not to mention the other staff – barely looked us in the eye, barely even gave us the time of day.

Where The Ledbury, sister to The Square, succeeds is in its location: it’s too far away from the City to cater for business lunches. Correspondingly, the corporate, suited feel of The Square is its let down. It may have been a quiet Monday afternoon, but the four other occupied tables were counting beans. And not their own. This might help explain the colour of the room: brown. Service was a thing of silence, which might be how such clientele like it – with minimal social interaction. The Square proves, contrary to the Michelin ethos, that food should not be the only consideration in assessing a restaurant’s worth. Almost as important is the service and atmosphere. Without the balance of these three elements, a good restaurant – in my eyes – can never be a great one. The food can only be as sound as the environment it’s served in. The Square is certainly a good restaurant, but on that Monday afternoon in no way was it great.

There were so many lovely sounding starters on the À la carte, we were pushed in that direction. Which was actually a mistake, as we have effectively trained ourselves to appreciate the smaller portions and broader taste range of tasting menus. So the larger portions for the mains were a bit of a struggle. The other plus for going the tasting menu route is if one course is not so great then it's not such a big deal, as it effectively gets lost in the crowd.

Two of us made main course choices that really showed off The Squares cuisine. I had the Roast Saddle of Lincolnshire Hare with a Tarte Fine of Celeriac and Pear which was amazing and one of my companions had the Fillet of Aged Ayrshire Beef with Autumn Truffle, Smoked Bone Marrow and Red Wine, again stunning but too large a portion. My other companion choose the Caramelised Pork Belly with Glazed Trotter, Savoy Cabbage, Langoustine Claws and Lentils and was very disappointed, as the Pork Belly was very fatty. Which was such as shame as up until that point everything had been sublime.

The pre dessert was a rather nice doughnut and rhubarb/raspberry concoction. Then for dessert I had a very boozy Rum and Raisin Souffle with Gingerbread Ice Cream - stunning. To finish we then had coffee and some Armagnac. This was served with a nicely balanced selection of petits fours that consisted of some chocolate/nutty/Carmel truffles and a range of lollipop style sweets. We finished them all. Only to have a second set delivered later.

The Square is somewhere I would highly recommend as a special treat.

French Cuisine in London at its very best. Opened in 1991 by the marvellous Philip Howard, the beauty is in the ever changing and always elegant menu. On my last visit, the seasonal ingredients were offset by some glorious December sun. With many Michelin starred restaurants it is not surprising to find yourself in a formal setting, but if there is a criticism of The Square it must be the slightly snooty atmosphere which is characterised by the self-conscious and overly serious staff. They must understand that diners do want (and are paying for!) exemplary service, but please smile, it is important that you are enjoying being very, very good at your chosen profession!

The snootyness of the atmosphere however is entirely juxtaposed with the enticing, beautifully presented menu. The crab lasagne starter was exceptional and the fish was a delight. My company thoroughly enjoyed their pork loin and it was all topped off by a recommended St Emilion '98 which was a tipple or remarkable quality, despite being drunk a little too quickly!

As a restaurant the room is airy and pleasant. As I said, a slight snooty atmosphere, but it doesn't matter unduly, eat, drink, be merry because it is not often that food and wine of this quality will be in front of you.

Good food, but some of the dishes could do with a little more work so that all the elements work together better. The private dining room we were in was nice. The wine available by the glass wasn't really what I would go for, but what I did compromise on was nice. Service as good, but not great. For example a batch of bread and butter was brought, then later more butter, then later still more bread. Some idea of what was to come, apart from the menu items, would be nice. Oh, and some better butter. The butter tasting I did in France may have ruined me, but I can get better butter than this in Tesco or Waitrose.

Food **** = Flavour of the food was very good, presentation of some was questionable, my mushroom & hazelnut starter looked like an unappetising grey foam. Atmosphere*** = The minimal interior was probably designed to create a modern, sleek vibe, but it was lacking in energy, they need background music and/or some art on the walls.

Absolutely one of the best dining experiences we have had in years. Every course was exquisite and perfection. The service was brilliant as well. Can't wait to go back. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

Tasting menu and service were both excellent. A good place for a special meal. We had the tasting menu and there is nothing to complain about. The place was empty on a weekday night so the attentive service was very much appreciated. Loved that they show you the ingredients before they cut them up and serve you. That’s what a dining experience should all be about!!

Amazing restaurant, a perfect mix between generosity and taste! However, we were disappointed by the fact one suggested us champagne as appetizer but without mentioning the price which was stupidly high. Also, the wine menu is too complicated and should be shortened. Very good experience overall but could have been perfect

We went here for our 10th Anniversary. The staff were attentive friendly and charming. The food was creative, subtle and very tasty - one of the 2 best vegetarian meals I have eaten out - this coming from a vegetarian that knows how to cook. As a bonus the staff showed us the kitchen and we met the head chef which we thought was a lovely touch. Worth every penny.

I can't wait to come back. thanks guys keep up the good work.

Very good, well presented food, very courteous staff that made us comfortable right from when we walked into the restaurant. I was there with my husband for a lunchtime set menu and the prices are not bad for a 2-Michelin star restaurant. There is a choice of a la carte menu too which looked delicious if you wanted to go extra special! The staff paid attention to every detail and paid particular attention to those that dined alone (very friendly and chatting to you to make sure you felt at ease). The decor was not my style but the use of leathers fit the food and the restaurant. It has got to be one of my favourites meal experiences.
