The feeling of Spanish authenticity is everywhere in El Pirata and it feels like you are sitting in Spain. I visited on my own when in London and was looking forward to the meal from the moment I walked through the door. The service was excellent, and the waiter helped my build a dinner that matched my appetite. I started with pan con tomate, and this was as good as I’ve had. I paired this with padron green peppers from Galicia and jamón serrano for the perfect start to the meal.

For main course, I opted for a trio that felt like they would compliment each other. They absolutely did – the chuletitas de cordero, carrillera and uevos rotos especiales were made for each other! Each was cooked with skill and care. I didn’t want the mains to end, as I tucked into each of these. The carrillera was just perfect, as it carried all of the flavours – it makes me smile just writing about it now.

To finish I went for the repe de chocolate, which is a pancake filled with chocolate sauce, flaked almonds & served with vanilla ice cream. It tasted as good as it sounds, and I would come back to El Pirata for this alone. I recommend the restaurant for anyone. From the service to the décor and on to the food, it was a delight in every single way. If you ever near Mayfair, then this is worth visiting.

It has not always been so easy to find good quality informal places to share food with friends in London.  I remember El Pirata around twenty years ago, a unique and instantly popular concept in upmarket Mayfair; authentic Spanish tapas that you could enjoy from lunchtime through to late at night.  We went a lot in the first five years or so, then work took me away from London and when I came back there had been something of a restaurant revolution in Soho and the WestEnd so we spent some time exploring that part of town.

Tapas is my ideal kind of food. I am SO indecisive when it comes to ordering in restaurants – and I hate getting food envy. . Have you ever gone to a restaurant, ordered your main course and someone else’s arrives which looks SO much better so you’re left to weep a little into your plate...no? Yeah, me neither…

So, lunch here with a work colleague and friend! Service was good - with timing to perfection.
We had the chorizo, gambas al pil pil, chicken, egg fritata .... hit the spot, but it wasn't quite the taste of real Spanish tapas - would probably give this a miss next time (given the extensive eateries in the area...)

Anchored for two decades in Mayfair with an admirable reputation, El Pirata has long been regarded as a regular favourite among the locals and a safe bet for out-of-towner’s seeking a more than decent meal. Slow sailing me, I’ve intended to visit this popular tapas bar for ages but only recently set a course in its direction, where I discovered a menu full of treasured Spanish dishes. Is El Pirata worth considering for your next port of call? Aye, cap’n.

Okay, no more nautical puns. Sorry. But I am pleased to report that this bar with the seafaring moniker offers some pretty awesome seafood dishes. From the tapas calientes menu, I especially enjoyed the fritos de rape (deep fried medallions of monkfish); pimientos de piquillo rellenos de merluza (piquillo peppers stuffed with fresh hake mousse); and the mar y tierra (prawns in olive oil with pimentos and wild mushrooms). Everything I tried was tasty and prepared to a high standard if not necessarily super wow awesome: tortilla was commendable, but I’ve had far better; chicken wings in spicy sauce were just so-so.

My order was from a set menu (which I kinda rejiggered to be less meaty and more pesco friendly for my date – hi Kemey!). It was priced at £21.95 per person (minimum two people) and was ample. A bottle of house recommended albarino – a fresh and citrusy Santiago Ruiz (£37.25) – went down a winner and paired impeccably with the seafood. A deliciously eggy flan (£4.45) was well worth saving room for.

Service was gracious. The setting was casual but buzzing. All the many Picasso, Miro and more Spanish artist prints filling the walls added a nice bit of colour.

I’m not entirely sure why, but I seem to have completely scratched off Spanish restaurants in London from my list at the moment. I was trying to work out why and then I realised, it mainly has something to do with my travels in the south of Spain in the sun drenched town of Jerez. Famed for its rock bottom priced tapas, small family owned bakery’s, LOTS of foie gras and sherry so deeply embedded in its history and every day life that the whole town smells of its fresh flor which lays inside the sherry casks keeping everything fresh. I miss traditional, honest Spanish food and so far London just doesn’t excite me in that aspect. Until now that is.

El Pirata opened their doors in 1994 and even to this day the place is still buzzing, with not a free table in sight. The interior probably hasn’t changed since the day it opened too, but that’s all part of its charm. Food wise we started off with two of my favourite dishes and they certainly didn’t disappoint. A plate of perfectly pan-fried padron peppers, doused in quality olive oil and good sprinkling of chunky sea salt – along with a plate of the finest Iberico ham (aka pata negra). If you’ve not eaten this ham before from the acorn fed Iberico Blackfoot pigs then I’d advise you to seek it out quickly. I can’t think of any other example in the world which has as much flavour and quite literally melts in the mouth – the fat particularly is the best part. One word – Perfecto!

One dish I’ve always sniffed at during my tapas eating years, is black rice. It’s made using black squid ink and for me personally has always just being overly fishy in flavour and unexciting to eat. Here the rice was very well cooked and the black quid ink and chunks of fresh squid meant for a rather delicate dish, whose fishy flavour wasn’t overpowering. There was also a slight touch of sweetness to it all. It’s dishes like these that when executed well, show you just how capable the Spanish really are at cooking. Deciding what went best with this delicious rice was hard but of course the tender octopus brushed with olive oil and paprika was a match made in heaven and the large, fresh and juicy prawns in a tomato, garlic and white wine sauce was equally as tantalising. All these dishes were missing was the warm sun on my face.

I enjoyed pretty much everything here at El Pirata but one dish in particular really failed to excite me (or perhaps I should say it satisfied me too much). To glance upon these broad beans don’t look like much, but in fact there was a lot going. They were very meaty in flavour from the help of some chopped jamon and drenched in what I think was a lot of butter. Each mouthful had loads of flavour but at the same time it also felt ridiculously heavy. On its own with a glass of high acidic Fino sherry I could see it working, but otherwise I’ll be giving this dish a miss next time. On the flip side of things the lamb chops were stunning little beauties. Cooked medium rare, full of smoky flavour and so juicy I had all those meat juices running down my chin – messy (yes) – but completely worth it.

Chicken and chorizo skewers may sound like an ordinary affair but of course when El Pirata is involved (as we’ve realised) nothing is ordinary and done in half measures. The chicken was very moist and not dry and overcooked like so many places manage to do when cooking under (or over) a grill. The chorizo was of good quality too, had a nice texture and with a deep flavour and good amount of smoked paprika oil leaking out if it, just the right amount to realise your only a few steps away from that heart attack. Patatas bravas were perfectly good (although nothing to rave about) – although the with a vampire blinding garlic aioli for dipping which we stole from the bread was delicious.

Incredibly full by this point we wondered whether we’d have room for dessert, but strangely there’s always a little space for anything containing sugar. In fact desserts were actually the low point for me here at El Pirata. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t bad – they just weren’t as good as the savoury delights we’d sampled here so far. At some points the food here is so good that it means the other dishes almost have to step up, in line of competition. Crema Catalana was the most enjoyable dessert but the fried banana served with honey and ice cream, needed more honey and more frying for me personally.

Apart from some rather ordinary desserts, the food here at El Pirata was really very spectacular. It’s all very traditional, the ingredients are of high quality and even after 20 years of being in Mayfair the place still manages to deliver everything you could only hope for and more. If you’re missing those sunny trips to Spain then El Pirata is the place for you. Perhaps a bottle of wine later and a few too many glasses of refreshing Fino sherry later and who knows, you may even forget you’re in London.

Paulo is the resident whiz at El Pirata, also known as a Tapas Superhero.  In the time it’s taken to take off our coats and sit down, he’s registered that we’re a bit tired, in need of Tapas TLC and has swung into action. If you did decide to look at the menu, it is long and it would probably take you a while to go through it so my advice is to take advantage of their Superhero offering and just outline what you do and don’t like. My exact instructions were: I eat everything and I’m very hungry please. Done.

First out is the Jamon Iberico platter, it is of course sublime. The meat has a special flavour to it and the fat melts into your mouth as you chew and when paired with the warm hunks of bread and homemade aioli dip is a self-constructed sandwich made in heaven. Since first trying Padron peppers in Barcelona, I am a fan and these are just as gorgeous as I remember.

Tiger prawns come to the table bubbling away in a hot dish with tomato, garlic and chilli sauce and Paulo efficiently shells them for us so we can avoid the messiness and just take big hearty bites while snaffling even more bread to dunk in the sauce. Asparagus are perfectly well cooked but the real rapture must be saved for the black squid ink rice, which Paulo recommends eating with a little side dollop of the aioli, just like he eats at home in his native Spain.

You know a dish is a particular favourite when conversation ceases, so intent are you on transferring each heavenly grain of rice into your mouth. It’s dense, sticky and black as the night!

Realising that we’re stuffed to the rafters, dessert is a light, a delicate crepe oozing with chocolate, served with a bit of vanilla ice cream on the side, it is the perfect end to the meal.

Consistently Good. I visit El Pirata for lunch every time I visit London. I found El Pirata on my very first trip to London and it is just around the corner from the hotel I always stay at too. I love the vibe and the food. It is always great to sit at the bar and enjoy the high quality, flavoursome tapas with some outstanding red wine

Absolutely the most amazing Spanish cuisine in London. I love the place so much I have to say. The black rice is sooo good that I can eat a whole bowl by myself!!! We 2 people ordered 4 tapas and 1 rice, that’s very enough and the price is reasonable. I definitely will go back again with my friends.

Wonderful place for a small gathering. We ordered 8 tapas and a paella for 4 people. All are very tasty. The paella is especially impressive. Rice is properly cooked and soaked in the juice of chicken and seafood. Very well seasoned. Tapas are good for a small group to share. I would highly recommend the Iberico ham - despite the price, you can really taste the difference. They literally melt in your mouth, leaving a lovely aftertaste. The squid ink rice is also delicious. The rest of the tapas are less impressive but they are all decent. Overall a wonderful tapas place. Will definitely revisit!

We loved our dinner date here. The tapas sharer selection for 62 GBP was what we went for. We were pleasantly stuffed by the end. Our favourite were the fried calamari, chorizo in red wine & prawns in oil. This is a definite must visit especially for dinner with friends or corporate team members . The vibe is right for such occasions.

Authentic Spanish food in Mayfair - very popular and great value! We arrived an hour earlier than our booking but the staff kindly still accommodated us. Appreciated the suggestions from the wait staff regarding the menu. Definitely recommend the arros negre which was delicious, the other octopus dish however was a little lacklustre

Upon entering we were already met with friendly, humorous and personable service. The place itself has so much character with a variety of art works ranging from the classics to modern. We sat downstairs in one of the booths and the privacy was perfect for our catch up. The food was delicious, loved every dish we ordered (seafood and vegetables) and the alcoholic drinks was a delectably fun time. Would definitely recommend. If I lived in London I would be a regular.
